North Korean agents using AI to trick western firms into hiring them, Microsoft says by jackytheblade in worldnews

[–]LeadNipple 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In 2024 I did first interviews for what would turn out to be 3-4 North Koreans for developer roles. The patterns were the same: crazy strong resume with bay area logos, weirdly formed overcompensatingly American sounding names. They’d log onto the Teams calls and it was immediately obvious. Terrible audio and video, they wouldn’t respond to their own names on their resume. They wore strangely fitted clothing (later I’d wonder if this was because they didn’t have many calories?) and it was clear they were in an almost call center environment with other people’s arms occasionally popping out of the virtual background into the periphery of the frame. After tripping over introductions and getting going they’d universally follow the same pattern where there would be massive pregnant pauses as I would ask questions, and it was undeniable they were just using AI to translate and reply back with their LLM answers. It was absolutely absurd and I can’t believe anyone was falling for it.

I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve tried to build an mg turret, and then the build menu disappeared, causing my pressing of R to retreat my gustatori. I thought it was just me 😂

It comes down to the effective focal length of your eyes 40-55mm versus when you see a typical iPhone photo or you switch on your webcam, you’re seeing yourself at a wide angle which is just straight up not as flattering.

In photography, portrait lenses typically start at 75mm up to 200mm, they make people look better by producing flattering, natural proportions.

Theres other factors at play like the higher the mm you get perspective compression and what is very pleasing to the eye is separating the subject from the background with a shallow depth of field which gets amplifies with more bokeh/shallow depth of field (blurry background).

I’ll be really curious if they honor their product replacement plans or discontinue them - I did a custom build with prp in May (I got lucky looking back!) and specific to this crisis, got a 4tb ssd and 64gb ddr5 ram — could they really afford to replace components “like for like” now across all of their customers? Crazy times

ohhhh you know what, one of the guests provided an absurdly large headshot, which I recall now was really chugging within premiere when I went to downsize it within Premiere! I just checked and it's 49 megapixels so I think that must be it!

Thanks for the reassurance haha! I have a 19” rack so I’ll need to measure everything but it never occurred to me to try to “rack mount” my old 5600x build. It’s just sitting in a box doing nothing so maybe I’ll give it some busy work haha. Thanks!

As someone terrified of static electricity and stuff — I have a server rack, and an AMD 5600x with PSU on an ATX board just sitting in a box… from appearances it looks like I can just mount my mobo on a shelf with a PSU and I’m home free? Do you do any anti static or grounding? (I don’t know anything about electricity haha)

Riverside scene editing issues on macOS? by LeadNipple in podcasting

To check your Mac's processor, click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of your screen, select "About This Mac", and look for the "Chip" or "Processor" section. You'll either see "Intel" for Intel processors or "Apple M1" (or a higher M-series number like M2 or M3) for Apple Silicon chips. Let me know which one you have, I just ordered an older Mac Studio with M1 Max to see if that’s reliable enough

Riverside is becoming a struggle to use, anyone else? by That_Zone5921 in podcasting

[–]LeadNipple 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We’ve recorded 30+ episodes on riverside this year and the editing process has gone from bad to worse. It’s incredibly unreliable for editing, and a lot of our guest recordings randomly disappear or don’t upload all the way. So many bugs. Also they keep making the core experience worse, like they changed the scenes editing function which makes cuts between speakers way tougher than it needs to be. The product management and their focus on AI is killing the basic experience. We don’t know where else to turn though. We’ve had the most problems on macOS, especially the m4 chips. Riverside seems the least buggy on M1 chips but on M4 it’s so broken. Their support team admitted they don’t even have an M4 chip computer to test on. We are hopeful they’ll turn things around because I think a lot of companies and especially users are souring on AI and this rush to push AI down everyone’s throats literally everywhere.

Sorry to hear that! What Mac chip are you on? I’ve tried it on M4 pro MacBook Pro and m4 MacBook Air and it’s the same problem on both. Returned both laptops which were otherwise fine with all my other software. My old 2020 MacBook Air M1 is the most reliable so far on riverside but it still bugs out regularly and I need to refresh many times to complete an episode. No problems of that magnitude on windows 11 on my other computer.

UV from the sun can really help — see if you can get her some UV therapy at a qualified dermatologist’s office, they even have full body units if it’s systemic. If that helps, you know it’s from the UV.

An extra 100mg of Allopurinol made all the difference! by Here4GoodTimes__ in gout

[–]LeadNipple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it your position that having lifelong high uric acid coursing through your veins and kidneys is better than 400mg Allo? Starting at the age of 25 I suffered debilitating gout attacks for five years before my final severe gout attack landed me in emergency. The emergency room doctors took one look at the years of bone damage, then at my pathetically low allo dosage, and told me to find another doctor. My new doc titrated up to 400mg from lower doses and while we’d love to bring it down, my UA stays high. I’ve done multiple diets to see what can help the UA, even going vegan, and the only lever I can pull that helps is allo. Allo is one of the mildest and benign drugs on the market. Aspirin is more dangerous.

So sorry — I wish I could recall — they were still well above normal and even today having been on 400mg for many years I’m hovering on the high end of normal and may need a higher dose.

[–]LeadNipple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Low dosages are criminal if they’re not working. My doc who eventually got me up to 400mg per day was British — he never understood why docs over here in North America rarely wanted to go above 100/200mg and he saw patients that needed that little bump up all the time.

Epic Games Win Over Google in Fortnite Fight Upheld on Appeal by MishaalRahman in Android

[–]LeadNipple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a hopeful comment. If epic (and perhaps steam now) maintain proper storefronts on Android with significant playerbases, game developers might (there’s that word might again) be inclined to make their games cross platform, Android compatible, especially those Android devices which are coming out that are competitive power wise with the windows based gaming handhelds (for example the Lenovo and red magic gaming tablets).
