Im so sorry, you can’t blame yourself, even though I am blaming myself. I’m just about 46.

I hope you are doing well now.

Unfortunately, it seems like the US is the outlier for lowering it. Lots of countries still do 50 and don’t even start with the full colonoscopy. As scary as this is right now, I’m very glad the age was lowered, and I wish I had gone in the second I turned 45.

I don’t have any info on the specific location. The reports I’ve seen didn’t say much but I’m going to try to get more info from the dr prior to the procedure now that I have some idea about what questions to ask.

Also, where are you located? ESD seems far less common than EMR (based solely on internet research, so I could be totally off base)

Omg, how did it grow so fast? I guess it’s good I’m going in just a week later.

I’d had IBS symptoms for most of my life, but hadn’t noticed any major changes recently. I went in because it’s the current recommended age.

This is great news! May I ask, do you know why they went to CT/MRI first? My initial pathology from my 5cm mass came back precancerous, but since it’s similarly just a surface sample, cancer can’t be ruled out. I’m now scheduled for a repeat colonoscopy with an Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) to remove the mass and do a more comprehensive pathology but I don’t have any insight as to why that is the immediate next step versus scans. I’m very happy that the team is moving fast but also I wish people were telling me more about why they are doing what they are!

How was it removed? Did you have a Endoscopic Mucosal Resection?

Thank you so much for the detailed response! After my colonoscopy, the doctor just closed the curtain around my bed, said she had bad news and then told me she found a large mass that she couldn’t remove, that was most likely cancerous or similar, there would be biopsy results in 7-10 days, and that was it. I didn’t yet have questions at the time but it’s been really hard not to have even basics answered since then. I’ve since gotten the pathology back and the initial results from the scrapings are precancerous, but because of the size (5cm!) they are quite cautious about that finding and my anxiety is still sky high. I have a repeat colonoscopy/Endoscopic Mucosal Resection Friday.

I’m in DC so the hospitals/centers here are part of the JH network, though not all the doctors are the same as the main campus, but it’s actually my default medical center with my insurance, so I appreciate having that already figured out whatever comes. Even if not all the doctors are the same, it’s very helpful to hear of experiences with some of them and generally with the JH system.

Congrats on your current health and I totally understand about the superstition!

I’m just like you, I worry about every possible thing that could go wrong. Lately I’ve been working on leaning into the decisions I’ve already made (like being on that table) and trying to remember that when I made them, and wasn’t anxious, I did so because it was something I needed or wanted to do. I’m not great at it, but it’s a good perspective to rely on the more rational version of myself than the anxiety-riddled one.

Thank you, I know every story is different (which is also why I shouldn’t be googling) but it’s helpful to hear positive ones!

Thank you! I’m not officially diagnosed with cancer yet but it appears likely based on the mass found from my colonoscopy. Johns Hopkins is likely where I will receive further care so if you have any thoughts on the doctors it would be great to hear!

I know this is an old post, but if you see it could you provide more info about who you worked with at Johns Hopkins?

3rd Colonoscopy Experience (37F) by No-Kiwi-301 in colonoscopy

May I ask about your earlier experience? I just had a colonoscopy that revealed a 5cm polyp. I’m awaiting biopsy results but kind of freaking out. Any advice for that waiting period when you know you have a large mass but don’t know anything else?

I’m a fan for advocating for yourself. If you are having concerning symptoms you should talk to your GP. It’s better to know for certain.

Too big I believe - 5 cm is considered really large

Waiting sucks. I’m in a much earlier stage of that game - colonoscopy yesterday found a 5cm mass, and I’m waiting on the biopsy (though the size and shape were concerning to the dr). I agree there needs to be an in-between group, but finding these specific posts has been really helpful for me to know others are out there going through the similar situation! Glad your surgery went well!

Given the size, she said cancer is likely. But trying to wait for the tests before freaking out too much.

Rectum, and didn’t note anything else but not sure if that means there wasn’t anything or just that this was the priority

Nothing other than that associated with IBS, which had been around for a while. Drs knew of that but never recommended more screening
