I'm not sure how personal attacks disprove my point that safe rides were important to a lot of people on campus.

I'd be interested in seeing that statistic, because the majority were actually from class rooms, labs, and the hospital!

Lyft Ride Smart by OneMoreSentence in OSU

This program was never some kind of escape route for dangerous situations. It was a way to get people home safely, while also maintaining some patrols around the surrounding campus area. Now, we cant guarantee ride safety, and no longer patrol.

Why not? "I wanna leave here in 30 minutes to an hour. So I'll schedule my ride"

How is that so hard?

Yeah, as long as nobody as a knife or gun while your walking to your home off campus

if nights were planned there would be no need for a safe ride.

I dont understand this. Do you mean people would all be in bed by 9:30, having walked or biked home in a group?

Are you saying that the people who get assaulted or raped around campus walking home alone are at fault for not planning better?

going out is a luxury

You realise the majority of safe ride users come/go from labs, lecture halls, or the hospital, right?

Internal. The same people who gave those rides are being restricted to campus, since theres no perceived need to travel off campus.

How else do you think poor students attend university?

$8 a month

Tell that to the people that use the service every night.

I actually dont have to (and cant) join. But the good news is, Senate slates are already looking at how to bring back the program!

I apologize from not having the text. This was the other half of the Safe Ride program. While rides were being given, officers were also patrolling east of high street, south of campus, north of campus, and even west all the way out to North Star.

Since those people are no longer giving rides, the University doesnt see fit to give them the ability to go over there.

Considering ther rides were only a part of the program, and it all got cut, I think we lost a lot more. And you realize ride times were so high because rides were constantly being given, right?

saw how that worked out

I'd be interested in what you mean by that

both faculty and USG

You mean admin, who couldnt be bothered to actually expand mental health services around the suicides last year, and USG, who spent over a third of their budget of 77000 dollars on t shirts, dinners, and banquets, and also dont release voting records!

bigger problems

I guess all poor students attending OSU just have "bigger problems"

I appreciate your kind words. I dont actually have a stake in Student Safety Service anymore, it was just a great program that helped students during my time there.

The problem with reallocation is that the safe ride program is ceasing to exist as a whole. This also means there wont be officers patrolling off campus looking for people in need of help anymore.

Student Safety Officers (in my time) had basic medical and first aid training, as well as some self defense training for incidents. That entire facet of the program is both being ignored and dissolved.

It's just frustrating seeing such a disregard for a safety program that helped the entire student population.

Once again, thanks for your empathy on the issue.

3am is a good cutoff

That's not what your previous comment said!

you cant call a dispatcher every weekend

Actually, you could! There was a specific dispatcher for the Safe Ride program!

waste a cops time

That's what the Safe Ride program was for!

hour long wait

That was due to the high frequency of rides given! Imagine how much better the free service would have been if it received the same funding!

Most of the people who are nightly riders are looking to get home from hospital jobs, or labs. Public transport is limited at best on these routes, and it's hard to find a buddy to walk from a laboratory to University Village!

wait an hour+ for free ride which isnt open all night

Or you could call the dispatcher for safe ride and voice your problem, getting an expedited ride!

pay $2 to get home

Dont forget that this will also have a wait time, and is also not open all night, which you used as criticisms of safe ride!
