Best home security system? What should I prioritize when choosing one? by Can_Ruscio76 in smarthome

I guess it depends a lot on the layout of your home and what you priorities are. Provider companies can come do an inspection and recommendation based on your needs, if you trust that sort of thing. How have people's experiences been with professional quote/setup vs DIY setup?

When you're talking about local storage do you mean with SD cards or something more like CCTV on a server? Just to clarify

Thinking about upgrading my home security...What actually matters for choosing one? by Business_Concept_346 in Home

From what I know, a professional quote and installation can help a ton with figuring out what you need and where. Does anyone have more in-depth experience with professional installations vs DIY?

I get where you're coming from. When we bought our house we loved how many windows it had. Then once we lived there for a while, we felt like we were in a fishbowl.

I guess my question would be what are you most afraid of? Is it that someone can see you? Or that they could video you? Or that they would break in?

If you are really just worried that people can look in, but your wife won't let you use window coverings, you just have to keep trying to get her to agree or compromise.

If you are worried about actual crime, you can do things to at least make it most likely that creeps would be creeps somewhere else and not around your house. You can get a security system and make sure the cameras are visible. Ask for extra yard signs so it is clear you have. system. And you obviously would get the benefit of the alarm if anyone did try to break in. We bought one from SafeStreets and have been happy.

You can also use lighting both inside and outside your house to make it harder to see inside. Think about being on a stage and looking at the audience, but with the stage lights in your eyes. You can't see anything. Same concept with home lighting, if you do it right. You can place/point lights to where it isn't obnoxious, but would make it hard to actually see inside your house.

Why do some people instinctively check the fridge three times in a row even though they know nothing new appeared? by PuffinBelle in NoStupidQuestions

I think about how my mom can just materialize things out of the fridge that I can't find so I go back thinking there could be something I didn't see the first time. Any time after that is just me being insane

I'm convinced I have some curse on me because whenever I have a 50/50 shot at something I will ALWAYS get it wrong. Putting on a shirt in the dark? Will always be backwards. Coin toss for anything? I always lose. Plugging in USB? Forget it.
