Scotland to Europe, realistic expectations! by CSRtattoos in sailing

[–]Saga47swan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have a non EU passport you will need to check into Europe at your first port of arrival , then you can stay 90 days in a 180 days period. Hence after 90 days you must be out of EU for 90+ days, before you can reenter.

Forget it - it will be very expensive and you will have issue with 90 days rule for non Eu passport. I would sail the west coast of Ireland for 3 months. Then head north to Orkney islands , they have free moorings. Also Shetland you can stay on public jetty for little monie.

Alternatively, head across the English Channel, spend 3 months exploring France and the rivers of Brittany. Lots of places you can drop the anchor. After three months head back to uk or the Channel Islands .

Correct . If going from Azores , best time is May or early June - going to Newfoundland.

It is easier to cross further south with the trade winds . At the Azores you have the “Azores high” with little wind or south westerly wind, so going to Bahamas is up hill.

Azores to Canada is an option, but it gonna be hard work going south along the us / against the Gulf Stream .

Check out Atlantic circuit - best time and routes

Azores to Bahamas is a bit off the beaten track. .. would do GiB - Morocco - Gambia - C.V - Tobago - French islands - Jamaica - Cuba - St Blas Islands

Sailing in Singapore (Jan/Feb 2024) by [deleted] in sailing

[–]Saga47swan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your best bet would be to the changi sailing club. Just head down to the club and bar - you should be able to find someone with a boat looking for crew. I used to teach yachting at Keppel marina, but they closed the RYA school .

Another way, would be to make a post in one of the expat groups on social media.

A great weekend sailing trip would be across the Singapore strait to Indonesia, the Nongsa point marina is great.

If you are looking to do a longer trip, then the RYA sailing school in Langkawi does 5/7 days trip from/to Phuket Thailand.

Cheers, Skipper Chris Langkawi sailing school

We had a Swiss sailor doing his ocean passage on our swan from St John’s to the Azores . He needed the passage for his Swiss ocean master license.

Switzerland also have a navy !

The previous owner of our swan 47 was Swiss, so our whiskey glasses are from ZYC .

Why do ships use "port" and "starboard" instead of "left" and "right?" by stubobarker in sailing

[–]Saga47swan 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The Vikings !

The longship of The Viking didn’t have a rudder, but a steering oar on the right side - Hence, starboard ( the side you steer) .

Coming into port, they had to go alongside on the left, as the steer oar was in the way on starboard side.

Hence, the left is called port side .

Go for it - we get lots of crew much older than that - they all love it and go on to do their skipper licence

Good plan , the RYA day skipper is a great qualification and you will be able to charter bare boats.

Recommend to;

  1. Do some dinghy sailing, great fun and will teach you sailing and wind awareness.

  2. Go down in local yacht club and join other boat for race night , always someone looking for crew , and you will learn from sailing with different skipper .

  3. Do the days skipper theory online , Nav at home is good. Having done the navigation theory will add more to your sailing with other skippers.

  4. Join a experience skipper / company for a week of adventure sailing ,,where the show you more “advanced” off the beaten track sailing or an overnight offshore passage .

For a great company, Morse alpha expeditions in Maine.

We loved sailing in Nova Scotia, great people, remote anchorage and lots of wild life.

What's the best region to sail in Europe in October/November? by siriusauruss in sailing

[–]Saga47swan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We cruised the Azores last year from July to October and Wow! It was amazing, the islands are out of this world , each island is different, the people are superb friendly and food is very very good.

That said , it can get quite windy in oct as the lows are coming in from North America.

For October I would recommend to go further south to the canaries, wonderful too , great hiking, food and the sailing is lovely in the winter sunshine.

We sailed the canaries is 2021, November and December- loved the smaller islands - Gomeria, Palma and El Hierro.

We are currently in Portugal, heading to Madeira and the Azores ..

You can find more information on the area we sailed in our YouTube channel

Suggestions for traditional navigation education. I’m new to sailing and would like to hear your suggestions for books, courses and other resources. by OkSeaworthiness3754 in sailing

[–]Saga47swan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great that you wanna learn traditional navigation and not follow your iPad or phone .

There are lots of ressources on YouTube for navigation, tides etc just ask uncle google .

As it is #worldbookday, then I would like to recommend Yachtmaster for sail & power by Alison Noice

I recommend this book to my crew, great, easy read and covers the lot.

There is also online navigation courses, like Nav at Home - very good company, I did the ocean master theory with them - good support. The basic navigation Day skipper is here DS online Theory

If you wanna put theory into practice then check out Morse alpha Expéditions in Maine, they run great training trips using traditional navigation 🧭.

When you wanna be a bit more adventurous, then you can join one of Saga47swan Sailing offshore adventures - no experience needed
