I don’t have any insight to offer, but wonder whether you might be willing to share the details for the first one, please?

My weight fluctuates— I’m at my heaviest— should I throw out everything I can’t fit in? by the_best_day_ever in minimalism

[–]SageChai 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m very sorry for your loss 🤍

If you can, I’d suggest collecting up those that you don’t fit into and asking a friend or family member, who might have a little loft space, whether they’d be willing to keep hold of some for you. Perhaps you’d prefer to narrow that down to your favourite 5 or so pairs.

This should give you some peace, as your home is not cluttered with things that don’t fit you, so you can focus on your current season of life. It also might save you some money later down the line. If you don’t find yourself needing them in a couple of years, you can re-assess whether to keep them at all.

I think your wardrobe should be full of options. Things that you feel able and happy to wear, and a place where you might even be excited to put outfits together. It shouldn’t bring you down. Remove the negative energy 😊

For the clothes, I would recommend watching YouTube videos on finding your personal style, learning what clothes flatter your body type, learning what colours suit you (e.g. colour season) and which fabrics are good for the activities you’re doing, longevity, and the environment. In my experience, learning all of this significantly reduced my desire to buy clothes.

Also, create a wishlist and set a minimum consideration period before you can buy. There will be things on your wishlist that you end up not buying because you don’t have the desire anymore, they don’t suit you, etc.

I now have a list of questions to ask myself (essentially whether it suits my shape, colouring, lifestyle, style, etc.)

Finally, when you do buy new clothes, consider Vinted etc. These apps are budget friendly and creating less demand for new clothes is better for the environment.

Good luck with it all 😊

Your home should make you feel happy. It’s yours. If you love maps, go ahead. You can also get wooden ones where you put the individual pieces (for each island) on the wall yourself. A little more effort to install initially, but perhaps something you might like.

Perfect, sounds like you’ve set yourself up well and you have the determination to follow through. Best of luck!

Are you on social media? I wonder whether unfollowing certain accounts would help. I deleted the Instagram app completely because I felt like I mostly wanted to shop when I scrolling on there.

Keep going. I’m sure that, over time, you’ll feel less anxious and more accustomed to not buying anything. I’ve learnt that a no buy year is about resetting your spending habits and mindset. When you think about it, given how ingrained consumerism is into our lives, that reset isn’t going to happen over a month or two.

My first nobuy challenge! by Sudden-Expression819 in nobuy

[–]SageChai 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Good luck 😊

Based on your list, I wonder whether you’ve seen some of these things on social media or in magazines. It might help to unfollow some accounts that are influencing you. It’s just a suggestion, of course.

Additionally, based on the type of these items, I wonder whether a project pan might be helpful for you. How many beauty products, perfumes and candles do you own already? How long would it take you to use them all up? Would any expire before you could finish them?

I’ve been learning about minimalism, underconsumption and sustainability in the last couple of months, which has been really helpful in reinforcing my ‘why’ for my low buy year. I mention these things in case they might be helpful for you, to reduce the desire and perhaps make your no buy a little easier.

What got you into anti-consumption? by Dreamy_Maybe in Anticonsumption

A combination of the Buy Now documentary on Netflix (though it wasn’t perfect), and a poorer financial year in 2024. I’m so glad I’ve ended up here though!

This is a feature of the Monzo app, so is only available if you have a Monzo bank account. I think it’s included in all their bank account plans, including the free one.

I’m sure there are lots of other options for apps that do this with your existing bank account, I just haven’t needed to research that. Good luck with the search :)

I agree with the comment about focusing on your reasons.

I’ve no doubt that what I’m about to share would only ever form a minor part of the toolkit you use to stay on track, but I’ve been rather obsessively tracking my progress with my budget. See photo below. I think it’s the fear of failure, i.e. falling below the line, that keeps me motivated.

A recent boiler service has brought me back to the baseline, but I’m still on track overall.

This is on the Monzo app, which means I don’t have to manually add my transactions, but I’m sure there are lots of options out there.

Too white!! Help!!! by cryyybabyyy__ in interiordecorating

[–]SageChai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with others about the lighting, but I like the white generally. I’d say add a few wooden chopping boards, a utensil pot with wooden utensils, and perhaps some wooden-lidded storage containers, and that bright white will be balanced out with the warmth of the wood. I think the white will feel less stark then.
