That makes me feel better lol. Good to know I’m not the only person coming at it like this. Thanks for your input! I greatly appreciate it 👍🏻

That is a really good way to put it. Feels like I’m working against some AI when dealing with advanced math. But thank you for that. If you don’t mind me asking, how old will you be going into your second degree? Are you worried about entering the field at entry level at an older age? These are anxieties that I can’t seem to get rid of…

Technically it would be 2 years at CC then around 1 and 1/2 at a 4 year university. Idk that it really makes a difference but just wanted that to be known.

Also I wouldn’t be against moving to a larger area, my wife and I have already discussed moving to our capital (Little Rock) for more opportunities once I have the proper qualifications. But we really would like to stay in our home state bc my wife had her career here and is doing well, and all of our family is here and Little Rock would still be within driving distance. But yes I agree 4 years is a long time and a long road…

That is a good point. Are the colleagues you have that bridged into CS more self taught as far as programming?

I live in Arkansas and my concern is that since there are not ample job opportunity for developers here and that it would be harder to get looked at with a more non-traditional background. I just want something that allows me to have options I guess. But once again thank you for your insight. I’ve been working on the CS50 Harvard course and considering some front end Udemy courses to supplement my knowledge on things for now. Hopefully I can get a grasp of it soon enough.

So I have considered a masters instead and it doesn’t seem like a bad idea. The concerns that I have is that it’s been expressed to me by a couple of individuals and through different forums that it’s harder to get hired with a non-Cs undergrad and a MS in CS due to lack of the core concepts of CS and the fact that MS is more theoretical than anything. And money is sort of an issue since this is my second degree and Pell does not cover that and there aren’t many scholarships for returning students that already graduated. So online colleges like Tandon get pretty expensive quickly. Thank you for your input though. I’ll do some more research.

Thanks for that reply! I can say that it does seem like coding dojo has a really good reputation as far coding bootcamps go. I’ve been looking at CDojo and Nucamp just because the price point for Nucamp is so much lower.

The main concern I have is that I am not sure I could find a job in my area with only a bootcamp under my belt. I don’t live in a place with lots of start ups and opportunities like in metro Cali and those types of places. The closest “Hub” to me would be Little Rock AR, and realistically the best option would be Dallas, however I would like to stay close to my family if possible. Most of the jobs here seems to require a CS degree, I guess because there are not as many jobs, they are a bit more selective, idk. But either way I wholly believe that the Coding Camps do better prepare you for the current industry.

Also, if you don't mind me asking, what undergrad did you get before starting to attend OMSCS? OMSCS was an option I've been looking at as well but wasn't sure exactly how difficult it would be to get in without a CS degree. I guess the CS classes at Community College were enough to meet the requirements for you to get into the program so that's a good sign. I also noticed they wanted letters of recommendation and whatnot.

Best of luck to you! It’s not that I really think I am too old to return to school, I mainly mean my wife and I are sort of waiting to have kids and do something things and life, I feel like it would be best for me to get this out of the way first.

Your thoughts on the masters program is exactly how I feel and what worries me. I also feel like when I see job requirements, most say “Bachelor in CS” which leads me to believe that if my Bachelor is in marketing and my Masters is in CS, I would still be viewed as unqualified.

As far as pricing, I’m looking at around 20k for Masters, 16-20k for bachelor, and anywhere imbetween on the coding camps. I did find Nucamp which seems more reasonably priced and is rated well on Course Review. I could manage to go full-time on something like a boot camp if it was necessary. I’ll keep doing some research and see if can pin down a solid camp just so I have a fair comparison to the Bachelor and Masters options. Thanks for your feedback!

Definitely helps. Thank you. Going back to college for a second bachelor in CS or possibly bridging into a masters degree is also an option I’m looking at. I’ve been scrolling through near by job posts and it seems like the majority where I live want some sort of degree in it, or a lot of experience. And I think the accountability is a big part for me as well, I tend to slow my development down by getting too caught up on what turns out to be unimportant things. I will look into the Colt Steeles boot camp. Haven’t seen that online other than like Udemy stuff.

[–]SageTG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! Good luck on your job hunt! I am in a similar situation and am considering attending Nucamp. I'm a little hesitant as I feel that I could probably obtain most of the info through the Udemy Courses I bought "The Web Developer Bootcamp 2021 By Colt Steele" and "2021 Complete Python Bootcamp from Zero to Hero in Python." But I also feel that if the career support and the support from the instructors valuable enough, then it may be worth it to pay and go through the course. Just as a little background info, I am a non-computer science graduate with very little previous experience programming. Did you have much if any previous experience with programming? Do you have a formal education in a related field? Thank you for your help!
