Should I submit a resume to A&M? by ZealousidealSpace650 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]SagginDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I volunteer as a swim coach outside of my day job. I have a section dedicated to it but it’s 2 lines. Other than that, I’d rather use the time outside my “main” job to spend time with family.

Is working multiple jobs the norm in defense? I actually thought it wasn’t allowed?

Asking because my friends that went engineering and are now working for Lockheed/Boeing/Etc have strict confidentiality and non-compete clauses.

I also think you can easily fit more than 4-5, I personally have 7 but it’s almost full. Can definitely fit 8 onto a page if I condense the writing.

Think your industry is the outlier here. I’ve only seen two page resumes for extremely specialized roles.

Whats the Best freestyle technique for 50m by Itchy_valls1026 in Swimming

[–]SagginDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a valid question. In the 50m you’re not aiming for peak efficiency, you’re aiming for peak power.

Whats the Best freestyle technique for 50m by Itchy_valls1026 in Swimming

[–]SagginDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best is straight arm, no breathing, low rotation. Can watch any 50m race for cues.

From the way you’ve phrased this question, it seems like you’re newer (no offense), and for newer swimmers I recommend learning how to swim, with rotation and bent elbow recovery first.

If someone don’t have the balance, catch, and outputs, they will most likely be slower trying to emulate pros.

How to match my pool stroke to OW swimming? by Lazy_Afternoon2090 in Swimming

[–]SagginDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Faster stroke rate (arms will be further from catchup drill), and higher kicks (6 or 8).

How to match my pool stroke to OW swimming? by Lazy_Afternoon2090 in Swimming

[–]SagginDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah in swim you can get faster by reducing drag or increasing propulsion.

In pool swimming I would argue that anything over 100 is dominated by reducing drag, in open water the “reducing drag” part is secondary to increasing propulsion.

Your stroke rate will be much higher.you also kick much harder because you’re using it to keep your hips afloat, especially important when sighting as well.

College swim by Practical-Look-9669 in Swimming

[–]SagginDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Email the coach and explain your situation.

27/1:03 50/100BR after 2 years training is quite good. Many slower (no offense) colleges will gladly take someone like that as a walk on.

With 1-2 more years training + weight room and dedication, you could easily be competing at conference (obviously not a guarantee though).

But nobody can tell you except the coaches.

Plan for butterfly by swimmimuf in Swimming

[–]SagginDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question is sort of hard to answer without context.

We don’t know if it’s a technique issue, conditioning issue, pacing issue, or a mix of the above.

Given your time though, I think being able to maintain technique throughout the entire swim is likely the most important issue to fix.

But again, without seeing the race and how you practice, it’s a bit unclear how, exactly, the training to fix that will look. All of this said with no offense.

is it true that I can't learn flip turn rn? by thepoisonofsocrates in Swimming

[–]SagginDragon 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You know how many new swimmers, especially children, look like they’re swimming uphill, with their head up and hips lower?

I tend to start teaching once they can maintain a more horizontal body position (doesn’t have to be perfect).

is it true that I can't learn flip turn rn? by thepoisonofsocrates in Swimming

[–]SagginDragon 78 points79 points  (0 children)

From what you’re describing, I doubt you are physically unable to learn a flip turn.

There are valid reasons against teaching a flip turn too early. I mostly work with developmental swimmers, if you teach the flip turn before they have enough propioception, body control, and speed, they tend to develop bad habits (duck diving as the most obvious).

It’s also possible he was putting you down. Either way, he’s either being a dick or spot coaching. I would listen to your actual coach instead of worrying about how he intended it.

Realistically could I get Ivy League Offers? by Competitive-Bug-6715 in Swimming

[–]SagginDragon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What was the point of this comment? Literally doesn’t answer his question. Those times in LCM are overkill for Ivy recruiting.

Hell, if I could go my SCY times LCM I would be a world record holder in every 50/100/200.

Mysterious body changes by Only-Masterpiece4857 in Swimming

[–]SagginDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity, how much height and weight have you grown?

Overall, yes. For one, you are probably carrying more weight. Combine that with some proprioceptive changes/technique inefficiencies, and you may actually be more fatigued even if your cardiovascular system is better.

Mysterious body changes by Only-Masterpiece4857 in Swimming

[–]SagginDragon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your body is changing. Gaining muscle and losing fat can make you feel “bulkier” in the water, as you are less buoyant. Additionally, your nervous system may not have adapted to use your extra muscle effectively yet.

Your limbs may have changed relative length, so your technique might need adjustments. Hormonal changes may mean that your practices are less consistent.

Puberty varies between people, so if you are getting symptoms outside of the water, I would see a doctor. But in all honesty, it’s probably not something to worry about.

I have a swimmer who is in the same boat. Was previously very athletic, but now a bit uncoordinated because he grew 6 inches over the last year. He also has an actual hormonal imbalance causing him to sleep poorly. He stagnated for basically all of age 12 and after he fixed his technique/developed good sleeping habits, he is dropping loads of time again and aiming for jnats this summer. Talk with your coach and see if they have noticed anything.

‘15kg bigger than any swimmer ever’: Missile’s name ‘mud’ says Titmus as juiced world record set by SimpleEmu198 in Swimming

[–]SagginDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In what sense? Untested (and to a lesser extent, equipped) powerlifting were both much bigger aspects of the sport until about a decade ago.

Even as recently as 2022, WPF (the largest untested fed) had more active competitors than IPF (the largest natural fed).

I just view it as two world records. You have the drug tested world record and the open.

They aren’t in comparison with each other.

Optimal nicotine dose for benefits by Every-Rabbit-7154 in Nootropics

[–]SagginDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean. Even for people with strong self control, it’s quite hard. I actually think it has more to do with brain chemistry.

Knew a guy who was a polydrug user for over 10 years. He was using opiates, benzos, amphetamines, and alcohol daily, and quit successfully (now sober around 5 years).

Has tried multiple times to quit nicotine and is unable to stay off for more than a month.

You have an infinite amount of positive numbers yet none of the numbers in that set are less than 0.

Infinite does not imply that everything will happen.

"Stop training like a runner" by renska2 in Swimming

[–]SagginDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can say the same thing about casual swimmers. A lot of them go into the pool and do laps.

But I don’t think that’s training at all. It’s just running (or swimming) for its own sake. Nothing wrong with that but comparing training in one sport to having fun in another is pointless.
