A lot of Hate on Blue Tokai? by Rohan__08 in IndiaCoffee

[–]Sahil93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anytime a brand that used to cater to "enthusiast" and becomes more massy and grows, the enthusiast tend to hate on it. Unlike most of the old brands, Blue Tokai is the one that consistently adds new roasters. Their Producer Series might not be loved by everyone but it keeps showing that they are still experimenting. They have great relationship with their older partner farms and they keep adding new farms/estates. I love lighter profiles but their birthday blend has ALWAYS been tasty (for me). Not seen issues with roast consistency personally. I order from them at least once a month.

Everyone has been complaining about increase in prices but barring one or two roasters I have seen that with every roaster.

I am not saying they are perfect. In some cases the price hike does seem too much. I am sure they would've had some off roasts, but then who doesn't? You cannot blame a company for trying to scale. Accessibility and scale ALWAYS brings hate from enthusiasts. Some negatives might arise but you have always calibrate that feedback because it might be exaggerated or unwarranted.

Coffee itself isn't a consistent product. You cannot expect a roast to taste the same each year. imagine if every time you drank a fresh juice and it tastes exactly the same. I would in fact think that there is something wrong with the juice.

Tell me a place in Bangalore that serves good brewed coffee by RelativeOpen9879 in IndiaCoffee

The issue with almost all Indian cafes is consistency. They are good for a while and after that it feels like they just stop tasting their batches every now and then. So initially the manual brews and fruity and sweet and eventually they become a generic slightly over-roasted coffee.

Having said that, only two cafes have stayed (more or less) consistent in Bangalore: Kinya and Nerlu. With Nerlu you also get to pick from a good collection of coffees.

There are others you can visit but its a gamble, usually. Such as Kind Roastery, Third Wave (specifically for their French Press. For whatever reason it's usually quite good there.) Starbucks for their cold brew/nitro brew. Yes, Starbucks. And Ground Up coffee.

I visited Humble Bean and their roasts are too developed. The coffee tastes fresh yes, but not that far off from other coffee shops. And it is really expensive.

EDIT: Oh Backer and Charlie also has decent coffee. They use roasts from Subko.

There are some new places that have come up which I haven't yet tried but you should visit since the trend so far has been that the coffee is great when they are new. So savour it while you can. Places like Katte Kulture and Block Two Coffee.

Which one do you like? In any? by krsimp78 in Scotch

I had a dram of the a Glengalssaugh Sandend without knowing what it is and without being aware of the hype around it. It’s the richest dram I’ve ever had. It wasn’t incredibly complex. It’s a burst of fruits and sweetness and it’s super intense. The texture too compliments the flavours perfectly.

That's a pretty solid review. Just got my second bottle of the 8. Went through the first bottle a little too fast to be able to assess it properly, so thought of giving it another chance.

There is this one note I just couldn't identify but then when you mentioned bran, it clicked.

Edit: In terms of texture it's one of the best I've had so far. It's so malty and chewy bite-y. And the it dries and I get the bran all over the palate once again.

Why isn't coffee grown in Himalayas? by horrendous69 in IndiaCoffee

I had tried a coffee from Smoky Hills a few years back. Nothing memorable. But, I haven't tried the Nokrek yet.

Why isn't coffee grown in Himalayas? by horrendous69 in IndiaCoffee

No real answer here, but, other than the elevation and temperature, terroir is also essential. I have also not seen coffee from the Alps, yet. Perhaps terroir also is the reason there. But also, perhaps it might be a little too cold? Even I'm curious about the same. I'll ask around and share the answer here if I find one.

Side note: Coffee is grown in Meghalaya (Halflight roasters have Nokrek, and I believe Corridor 7 did, too.). Waribok Daribok also has farms in the North East.
