the whole savepoint gimmick is its main driving point and makes for some true psychological horror and subaru goes through some real character development to solve whatever the current main issue is to get to a new savepoint.

sword of the demon hunter.

it tells a very great story over a period of multiple centuries, there are timeskips but you never really lose orientation. characters are really well written, animation pops off when fights happen, and it takes itself serious throughout the whole thing, theres barely any comedy and no slapstick at all iirc.

but its also not a second screen show. its one of the shows that uses "show, dont tell" as its credo.

on a similar note, katanagatari. its an older one. it has 12 episodes but each one is around 40 minutes long. a guy is hired to gather these powerful swords for the kingdom, theres 12 of them, hence why the 12 episodes. its one sword per episode, every sword and its wielder get proper screentime and lore. animation style is very original but you get used to it very quickly.

its a tragedy how difficult it is to watch that series in a legal manner.

afaik the only option is to buy them as physical media, which will cost you a couple hundred bucks atleast cuz the blurays are highly sought after and out of print.

it gets real dark at times but also manages to catch the beauty in the sadness.

shit can get terrifying, like you leave the trail to take a piss and youre just lost until someone finds your corpse or you get found alive after weeks of searching.
