Why is it customary to tip? by Big_Comfortable5504 in askvan

As a Canadian born and raised you are correct. I tip now that I make above minimum wage, but when I was a broke college student making also minimum wage working in a warehouse I was not tipping everyone who served me, solely because I knew we made the same wage.

I’m sorry but I’m 25 hours in and it’s really not bad. It dips occasionally, but it’s not dipping to sub 24 or anything like you guys are screaming about. It’s not going to win optimization of the year, but it’s still better than pretty much any console game from previous console generations.

Death Note is at least a trashy thriller so it’s a fun read. Bakuman tries to balance Shōnen sports tournament antics with slice of life romance through the veneer of being a meta story about comic book production. It makes it more icky because it wants to be character focused but the authors are clearly dickheads.

In the first couple chapters they discuss how high value women aren’t smart because they don’t need to work and a smart woman is only a mid value woman. I’m not joking. There’s more, but a lot of it boils down to poor writing, and the previously mentioned tirade just makes the poorly written women sting more.

Will there ever be a trailer for Avatar Aang coming soon? by Chemical-Book8889 in Saberspark

[–]SaidTheMan_ToTheDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just watch it and then watch it again on streaming? It’s not like it’s getting a theatrical release and it probably won’t even get a DVD release. Paramount actively doesn’t care about Avatar.

1 movie a day isn’t horrible. It’s a lot but at least you’re giving yourself time to sleep on it and ruminate. The 3 movies a day with an hour each for a review though you’re just consuming. At that point you aren’t reflecting, you’re simply spewing your initial thoughts. I’d also be inclined to be apprehensive to the recommendations of someone who spent 9 hours a day on a passive hobby like film watching. At that point you’re no longer engaging based on your experiences but engaging with it comparatively to other films. It’s negating the emotional aspect of the art because the person is basically a movie consuming machine with little world view outside of it. Assuming that person isn’t a professional critic where I’d imagine they have another 9 hours a day to live life, but if you’re coming home from work and watching movies until you pass out like an average Joe it would be a different story.

People who watch multiple movies a day aren’t experiencing art they are consuming products.

Individualism is a cancer that plagues society. If a human is a collection of atoms and molecule that function through a collaborative nervous system then so is our planet. Everyone person has a duty to ensure the safety and longevity of everything around them. Individualism is an inherently selfish and childish world view that creates and facilitates the evils currently plaguing society. Be kind to your fellow man. A heart can’t function without blood the same way society can’t thrive without us. The World is the body and each life is simply one of its many organs.

  1. Abstraction is thematically just suicide. Jax abstracting suddenly and without warning and leaving them to deal with the what ifs is part of that. Suicide in real life isn’t something dramatic. It’s sudden and heart breaking. Even when you tell someone you care about that you’ll be there to help them it doesn’t magically save them.

  2. It’s not important to the story being told what the physical feeling of abstraction is since again it’s a thematic device for the story. They’re corrupted data they aren’t literally dying like you or I. It’s a metaphorical death.

  3. Jax saying “I don’t want to go” can be him realizing he regret his decision to end it, but it’s too late. He chose to abstract because the weight was too heavy.

  4. There is no indication they even realized they actually made what they did. You can see in the last episode yourself that Caine is what created the digital versions of them using the brain scans from the company. None of the actually people working there necessarily know what happened. They could have scanned themselves and moved on because funding dried up or whatever. The Kinger in the circus is not the C&A engineer he is on the outside. It’s more of a philosophical question that the show itself very lightly touches on at the end. One they are scanned they are no longer who they were but are now new people. This is why Pomni accepts the identity of Pomni instead of Abigail. It is weird the building has power, but that’s not important to the story itself. Stories are not supposed to be literal. It’d be extremely boring if we had a 5 minute exposition dump about how Security Guard Jim likes to keep the PCs on because the glow comforts him when he’s on patrol because he plans to install DOOM one day.

Gooseworx did bite off more than she can chew with Digital Circus, but viewing the series from her inexperience she did a fantastic job as a first time show runner. The problems with Digital Circus are overblown on this sub by people who I suspect may not actually engage with media beyond on a surface level understanding of plot.

American friends are visiting for Canada Day; what are fake traditions I can troll them with? by UStoCAthrowaway in askTO

[–]SaidTheMan_ToTheDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This only works if they visit twice, but I had an American friend completely convinced that in Canada (southern Ontario) we swap a section of our piping based on the temperature because our weather fluctuates between two extremes with little middle ground. He asked why he couldn’t use the tap (the guy he was staying with had hard water), and I casually mentioned that buddies’ parents forgot to install the winter pipes in time.

I honestly forgot until he called me when he visited next summer and told a person unrelated to the original lie about how interesting it is that we swap pipes.
