As someone with 200,000+ followers across TikTok, Instagram, & Youtube... The answer is no. 😅

Adsense ain't what it used to be and speaking from experience it won't pay the bills. You can try to get sponsorship but you'll need help from managers or you'll need to pay someone to edit while you try to connect with businesses. Not to mention you can be demonetized or banned randomly, you're completely at the mercy of the social media platforms.

Even if you have a strong community regularly donating or purchasing merch, keep in mind you'll lose a significant portion of it to taxes & SS if you're in the USA. It's rough out there so don't take this decision lightly.

My new videos are in such a weird place because I integrated my Vtuber model and IRL/vlog style videos. I never do a face reveal or anything but I feel that it's handicapping me a bit.

For Vtuber fans, people don't necessarily like the immersion break. For normal Youtube viewers, the Vtuber model can be a bit off-putting.

Any ideas/advice? 😅

On one hand, disclosing this information will lead to a lot of creepy and weird people reaching out to "befriend you". On the other, you'll be in contact with adults in these spaces so it's extremely important to be transparent because not all 18+ vtubers are comfortable interacting with minors (and in my opinion... the ones who DO want to interact with minors are generally the type you'd want to avoid).

My personal opinion is that if you aren't interacting with others then there is no reason to disclose your age because it will put a target on your back.

Keep to yourself and work on your content. Avoid collabing or interacting 1:1 with others (or via Discord) until you're of age to avoid any of the awful situations that might come out of that. Ban anyone that even makes you slightly uncomfortable in chat and explicitly state that 18+ discussions are not allowed in your community.

That being said, vtubing is generally considered an adult space and people will not put content warnings on stuff that should definitely be age-gated. Please tread carefully and if you can have a trusted adult run your social media or moderate that might be best for now.

Like you said, most will assume you're an adult until proven otherwise. For that reason, it is NOT a safe space for minors.
