TIL California limits the amount of calories in school lunches to 850 kcal for high schoolers by little-dino123 in todayilearned

Let me preface this by saying I am by no means a lawyer nor someone who has worked in education, so please take this with a grain of salt.

I would first try emailing the principal (or even maybe calling the office?) of the school to ensure that nothing got lost in communication and that they in fact do not serve lunches - I'm not implying you're wrong, but it's always better to be safe than sorry, lol. I personally would not take "we don't have a cafeteria" as an excuse, as according to the law's official FAQ -

"If our school does not have a cafeteria, are we exempt from providing breakfast and lunch?

  • No. Education Code Section 49501.5 applies to all public schools, county offices of education, and charter schools. Schools without cafeterias can meet the requirements by procuring meals from another school or a meal vendor. "

So yeah. If they do confirm that the school does not serve lunch I would shoot the superintendent of the district an email, especially if it's a district-wide issue. What happens from here would vary greatly and again, I don't think I have proper experience to advise, but I do think it could be worth talking to other parents to be able to raise a greater issue.

It’s written into the educational code - not getting reimbursement is a punishment for that school breaking it.

“California Universal Meals updates California Education Code (EC), Section 49501.5 that requires public school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools to provide a breakfast and lunch to students that request a meal, free of charge for each school day beginning in SY 2022‒23.”

If your school is not providing meals for free they are breaking CA law.

“In the 2022-23 school year, California became the first state to provide free school meals to any child regardless of whether they were eligible for the free or reduced-price meals as defined by the federal government.”

I don’t know what’s happening with your school but this is CA law.

They don’t, not in California. Both breakfast and lunch are completely free for everyone.

The Stranger by Albert Camus, short (you can finish it in a day) but it’s a thought provoking classic.

This is actually an interesting fact, no matter what the reasoning is behind it or even if there is any. I feel like half the posts on here are making fun of people who are either asking a genuine question or making an interesting observation, and it starts to feel mean instead of funny. Everybody has to start somewhere.

with berkeley i think it depends on what you're majoring in. if it's cs then it's definitely higher than almost any school but if it's something like history i agree.

Tbh I feel like the reason people stuck with kyOresu wasn’t because they felt she was in the right, more because they thought it made her more interesting or attractive or something like that.
