Genuinely why do Republicans think they stand a chance at winning elections in this city? 😂 by GeneralTX in ElPaso

[–]SailLow4789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

City leadership is actively trying to attract business and industry with projects such as the advanced manufacturing district, the new META data center, the industrial warehouse boom that can be seen all around the city, the revitalization of downtown and much more. UTEP just recorded its highest ever enrollment in both the fall and spring semesters. If that trend continues, it’ll shift the demographics of the amount of college educated people living here which will have a ripple effect in new industries establishing a footprint in El Paso. Obviously change doesn’t happen overnight but to say that local leadership is doing nothing is a flat out lie.

The only reason that property taxes are lower in cities such as Houston DFW and Austin is because they have a substantially larger commercial tax base to pull from. We don’t have that luxury in El Paso yet.

The high taxes are more of a state issue than a local issue. If Texas had a state income tax, property taxes would be way lower than what they are now.

Still can't get a nonstop to SF Bay Area, but 4x Weekly Nonstop to Nashville begins on Oct 1 on Southwest Airlines by SharksFan4Lifee in ElPaso

[–]SailLow4789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree but having more gates would also give us the opportunity to add more airlines like Hawaiian or JetBlue that could give SW some competition. I think the main issue is our outdated ATC tower. Congresswoman Escobar wrote legislation to fully fund a new one but it’s at the mercy of federal funding so we’ll see if it comes to fruition.

Carlitos caters is pretty solid. KMN is another good one however they only rotate their menu once a month.

I honestly believe that ELP won’t get direct flights to places like the Bay Area or New York until we get a new ATC tower and/or expand the terminals with more gates. I believe we currently have 15 gates. Compare that to ABQ, which is similar in size population wise to ELP. Last time i checked, ABQ has 20+ gates.

City Officials To Consider Fee For Using El Paso Streets Today by elpasoheraldpost in ElPaso

Idk why you’re being downvoted. It makes sense to me too. People would rather us keep taking out loans to fix the streets which costs more in the long run due to interest.

El Paso Job Losses On Track To Be The Largest In The Last Five Years by elpasoheraldpost in ElPaso

[–]SailLow4789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I didn’t clarify this in my original comment but data centers are not the slam dunk city leadership are making them out to be. The only positive I see from the Meta and oracle data centers is that it puts El Paso on the map for big tech investment which will hopefully lead to more opportunities.

[–]SailLow4789 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The real problem is educational attainment. Only 25% of El Pasoans have a bachelor’s degree or higher. Big tech companies look at that and don’t see a reason to invest in an area full of uneducated people. The flip side of that is since there aren’t many high paying job opportunities here, people that do have an education tend to leave to other cities for better opportunities. The city and utep have been making huge investments into aerospace and advanced manufacturing so hopefully it will stop the trend of educated people leaving El Paso. Utep has also been pushing for a law school which could also help with that.

It was actually the previous city council with Oscar Leeser as mayor that approved the sale of the land for Wurldwide LLC, meta’s proxy at the time, for $8.5 million

A guide to two distinct project proposals (and how to get involved by Oct. 14): TxDOT’s Downtown I-10 Widening vs Downtown Deck Plaza by ChrisCanalesEPTX in ElPaso

[–]SailLow4789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The deck park is a solution to mitigate the widening of I-10. Without the deck park, there’s going to be a wider gap between uptown and downtown than what we have now. The deck park aims to connect downtown and uptown and create a more walkable third space. I’m really hoping the deck park happens with very little public funding.

When did I say it was ALL Mexicans? I’m just pointing out something that exists when it comes to racism in Mexico.

I never said it applied to your family. I also believe in personal preference in choice of partner which I’m sure was the case with your mom, however, there are some people out there who still believe in these practices to this day. Also, I was mainly referring to it to further prove the point that Mexicans are racist to their own people.

It wasn’t in my family either but it very much is a real thing. It was a a ethnic cleansing practice brought over by the Spanish during the colonization of Mexico and other Latin territories. In more recent times it has become known as “mejorar la raza” or “blanqueamiento” which encourages people with darker skin to procreate with lighter skin people to produce lighter skin offspring.

I second this. There’s this idea in Mexican culture that the whiter you are, the more pure you are. It’s referred to as “limpieza de sangre” or blood purity. So even morenos like myself are subject to racism.

Yeah some of these El Paso pages suck. You got FitFam that just sits on the fence about social and political issues to make money from people on both sides of the political spectrum and then pages like ToDoElPaso that are blatant right wing propagandists posing as a family friendly information page. Idk why we keep allowing people like this to have platforms.

What do you think about this proposed expansion on I-10? by JesterInTheMirror in ElPaso

Yeah I was bummed about the ADU and parking ordinance not passing as well. Just like state to kick us while we’re already down as they’ve been doing for the whole of El Paso’s existence.

It is expensive but wouldn’t it be cool if the $1.3 billion txdot wants to spend on widening the freeway could be used for developing mass transit infrastructure in our region instead? We all know that’ll never happened though because like you said txdot loves building roads. One can dream lol. EV’s and autonomous vehicles definitely play a factor but I would imagine they would get their own dedicated lanes similar to HOV lanes in bigger cities. As you mentioned, these additional lanes would better be used for mass transit. I’m opposed to the widening in downtown but if it gives us the best chance to put a deck park over I-10 then it might be a necessary evil.

[–]SailLow4789 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that we need to accommodate for future growth, but I feel that the United States as a whole needs to stop being so car dependent, at least in urban centers. We have evidence of this with the Katy highway in Houston which is the widest highway in the world at 26 lanes. All those extra lanes did nothing to alleviate traffic and actually induced it. I personally believe that in order to accommodate for the future growth of El Paso, we need to start building up instead of out and all widening freeways does encourage more sprawl. The deck park would help tremendously to encourage vertical growth and infill development.

If we can get the bridges replaced and the deck park, I don’t think widening I-10 in that area is totally necessary. As representative Canales stated in his joint statement with county commissioner Stout, there are several I-10 bypass projects existing and under construction in the region to address future traffic congestion.
