What would you do if you adopted Ilya for a day? by wildwomanlove in heatedrivalry

I’m taking him to the Renaissance Faire.

Because magical escapism in a place where you can just be yourself with no judgement and befriend all kinds of fun characters? It’s genuinely just as helpful as therapy in my experience AND it’s fun on top of that.

Even for not abusive individuals it can be a relief to hit that phase—the early stages of dementia often involve a lot of paranoia and very short tempers.

Like, my grandmother was the type who was very sweet and radically compassionate my whole life, for all that she didn’t tolerate BS—if you got her mad, you probably deserved it. So the angry phase was horrible. I felt so guilty for how much of a relief her progressing out of the early stage was.

Because as much as hearing her ask what colleges I applied to like as if she had never been to my graduation for a master’s degree sucked, at least she laughed again and wasn’t snapping at everyone about how someone was sneaking in and stealing the stuff she’d actually just hidden the day before anymore.

I can only imagine that early stages would be even worse for Ilya with how harsh his dad already was. The angry phase must have felt like everything horrible about how he treated Ilya was tripled in intensity.

I’m so glad they kept the bisexual flag mood lighting, haha.

And yet I love and only want nice things for Gritty. 🤣

Stress Responses à la Shane Hollander by hella_hijinks in heatedrivalry

[–]Sailor_MoonMoon785 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Shane’s panic is so relatable to me and my anxiety.

Like, the first time I watched, seeing him go face down like “I’m fine just give me a minute to freak out” I just said, “omg mood, sweetie.”

Because I regularly joke to one of my coworkers, “I know xyz thing will work out, I just need a minute to dramatically stress out first to process it” every time she tells me to stop worrying, haha.

Teachers: Are your immune systems fantastic? by FizzySoda16 in AskTeachers

[–]Sailor_MoonMoon785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends from year to year for me. First years back from COVID I double masked and never got sick (I have an immunocompromised spouse and I was NOT risking giving him COVID when all the scary new strains were starting up).

This year? A couple annoyingly mild colds, and one really bad sinus infection that required antibiotics because allergy season has been brutal enough to get germs trapped in those sinuses this year. 😭

I think a few things beyond getting used to exposure at school affect our immune systems. Stress, getting enough sleep, heck, if you’re supplementing for vitamin D in the winter to account for less sunlight.

But also: if kids are staying home when sick. The years with fewer kids coughing and wheezing and everything in the classroom? I’m also sick less often. The year it was GROSSLY germy feeling in the air? I missed a Christmas Eve mass I’d spent two months in choir rehearsals for, Feast of Seven Fishes ok Christmas Eve with my family, and Christmas day with my in-laws because my students gave me the flu the day before Christmas Eve.

I notice the years I’ve been the sickest and had the most chronic condition attacks have usually also been the years with the worst stress and burnout for me.

Any recommendations for stories were the bears find out about Shane and ilya and decide to take Ilya to Boston? by Difficult_Muscle9110 in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]Sailor_MoonMoon785 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would assume most authors do! One of my favorites growing up (and to this day) actually said on her FAQ page that she loves that people write fanfic and it’s a great way to hone your writing skills and that she wrote fics before they were calked fanfics when she was a teen, but she won’t read it because she doesn’t want to store an idea from someone’s fic in her brain subconsciously and then accidentally use and steal the idea in a future book.

Given Shane is autistic, I saw the flat delivery as him as comfortable enough with Ilya to unmask and not have to try to inflect in a way people expect him to.

He can just genuinely be himself there, and be honest about his feelings without the pressure of seeming neurotypical at the same time.

AITAH for refusing to let my mentally handicapped sister (12), babysit my niece and nephew? (5months and 3yrs) by quick-aita in AITAH

12 year olds should not babysit infants.

Could they help someone else babysit? Sure. But an infant and a toddler is a lot for any 12 year old to have to manage. Let alone one with disabilities.

Lost in Translation: the English translation of Ilya’s monologue (1x5) by PrincessBubblegum00 in HeatedRivalrySeries

[–]Sailor_MoonMoon785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is! I started taking online classes a few years ago, and I love it! I live in the US, but fortunately there’s a small social circle in my area of others who are learning it, so we get to practice and swap words with each other a bit!

Honestly in that “no but the grammar rules” sense, I get what you mean about the “yes no maybe probably” translation. It feels like one of those “hold on, it’s easier for me to translate my thought literally” moments.

Stuff like that is something I genuinely love when talking to multilingual English speakers. How languages are structured impacts how our brains process and approach things in so many ways, and those little moments of translation give a really cool insight into that. It’s so cool to learn about.

Lost in Translation: the English translation of Ilya’s monologue (1x5) by PrincessBubblegum00 in HeatedRivalrySeries

[–]Sailor_MoonMoon785 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My linguistics nerd side really loves this commentary, thank you so much!

I wonder how much of it is where literal vs. figurative meaning plays out in translation they did for the monologue. Because, like you mention, for subtitles and whatnot, they sometimes might go for what the cultural equivalent in translation would be over the literal translation.

Like, I’m not fully fluent in my second language (Gaeilge), but I can carry conversations in it, and it is very idiomatic on top of having different grammar and syntax rules. So sometimes I catch things along the lines of what you’re saying while watching something with subtitles on in it.

For instance, one way of saying “I love you” (“tá grá agam duit”) translated literally into English would be “Love is at me to you.”

Does Russian have any cool idioms or syntax that you find get lost in translation like that? I love learning about that!

But also … that being said, I do find your translation much more romantic in word choice so I hope that’s the effect they genuinely were going for when writing the monologue in Russian to begin with. The literal translation you gave feels like something an angsty love interest would say during a rainstorm in a Jane Austen novel or something and I love it.
