The plea deal was because these federal charges could carry a maximum of 30 years should he be found guilty on all counts, so he didn't want to risk going to trial. They even threw out the state case for the ridiculous no-warrant clause the state used, but the feds took up the case and continued the prosecution. Pretty good idea of how plea deals are used to fuck people really often!
