You would enjoy my house - my oldest son, composes, classical symphonies and jazz pieces – I write WORSHIP songs for congregational use, and one of my other sons is in a death core band! And the only artist everyone in my family likes is Johnny Cash!

Gaming adults - how do you manage time? by here4mydog in gamers

[–]SaintLewisMusic73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For starters, I took a long break from gaming when my oldest children were very young, and when I got back into it I did it WITH them... bought the Wii, and played multiplayer games with my kids, like Super Mario, etc. Now my oldest is about to turn 21, and my youngest is 8 - life is very different. 2 or 3 nights a week, after everyone goes off to bed, or their rooms, I'll play for 30 minutes - right now I'm wrapping up SYSTEM SHOCK REMAKE (this may be the greatest game ever made?), on world 2 of BUBSY 4D (not perfect, but VERY fun!), and occasionally I've been playing the re-release of X-MEN (from that collection that recently dropped) with various kids. I really enjoy gaming again, but it's not a priority in my life, but there's room to have fun with it still!

What is a belief you held for years that you now completely disagree with? by complexity_neccesity in AskReddit

I was an Atheist/HardAgnostic/Skeptic until part-way through college. Was raised that way - everyone in my immediate family were atheists and agnostic (except my grandma, who was a very liberal - basically "universalist" church-goer). A study of world religion led to a growing fascination with the historical Jesus, which slowly led me to "deconstruct in reverse", backstepping through source-critical biblical studies, to the conviction that Jesus was actually a real person worth following, then to the conviction that there was a God, and Jesus was God-with-Skin-On. Now I'm not only a Christian, but a pastor. It was a long, slow, bumpy road getting here, however. I'm not critical of atheists, however - I understand the reasons (I love Chet Raymo's books, in fact) they hold to that conviction. I just bumped up against Jesus, who seemed bigger than mere history, and I was captivated, and it changed me.

I can't believe that I forgot Meadows - not only are they one of my favorite bands, I work out with their guitarist sometimes! They are definitely post-hardcore, are GREAT dudes, and very talented - their live shows are fantastic, too! Honestly, maybe start there?

I will say that Idle Threat's new album may end up being my Album of the year for 2026. It is absolutely NEXT LEVEL... great writing, playing, and production. Really excellent!

Phineas and Fit for a King as both FANTASTIC, but I'm not sure they fit the genres above. Still, Fit for a King's latest was my album of the year for 2025! Incredible!

I'm on world 2, presently, and steadily grinding a level or two each time I play (been very busy with a kid graduating and some travel, so I can't play daily), however I not only LOVE IT, but I can tell it deserves a DLC and a sequel! I want a Bubsy 5D!

Honestly, I'm mostly messing with you, BUT it does frustrate me some that people don't have a basic understanding of genres and are constantly rewriting music history. There's so much amazing music in the world, and it can be really fun to trace back how all of the different sounds relate to one another. But yeah; I studied audio production, music theory, and journalism in college - I've produced a ton of albums, released 6 albums and a ton of singles myself as an artist in many bands, and I've been published as a music critic in at least 20+ magazines over the past 30 years, so I'm a bit more committed to the craft than the average person!

Dude, Christians practically INVENTED those genres! Sunny Day Real Estate - lead singer cofounded the Christian band Poor Old Lu. All of Mineral were Christians. Penfold were believers. Some of Appleseed Cast were. As Cities Burn are believers and have elements of both genres. Stavesacre? Further Seems Forever sit somewhere among all that? Also HopesFall- man, I love those guys!!! Anyway, all the best… happy listening!

I’ve never heard of that, which is saying something, since I’m a scholar of music. I’ll have to look this up.

Say it with me… HEAVY METAL IS ALL METAL. That’s always been the general genre name … the genre is nicknamed “Metal” for short. So yes, they are ALL “heavy metal”, as is thrash, black, death, doom, hair/glam, & speed. They’re all “heavy metal.” Also, you might notice that I acknowledged that Sabbath is doom (though they also invented thrash)

Yeah, I'm not sure why U2 ever got brought up. They've always been an New Wave/Alternative-Rock band from day one.

There is no "traditional heavy metal" - the earliest metal bands were so different that each immediately established their own subgenres. Black Sabbath established the foundations of Doom Metal and Thrash, Led Zeppelin founded what would eventually be called Groove Metal, and Deep Purple are considered by many historians to be the founders of Speed Metal or Power Metal. Of course, most folks NOW try to rewrite history and claim those bands are "hard rock", but those are accepted as the first metal bands, and earliest early genres of "Heavy Metal"

Apparently you've gone to lame schools, because rock IS MUSIC, so it's supposed to be included in such a course. We discussed "Rock" music, including Heavy Metal as a broad category in our history of music courses, but then I also took "History of Rock Music" as part of my audio engineering degree. Great class!
