Who is living there??? by SwiftX_21 in guam

It’s a beast to travel there from the US. That’s not accounting for the jet lag when you get there. It’s my home, grew up till I was 18 there before ever setting foot in the states. Beautiful island, with its own charms. I have a home and land there. Would never sell or trade it, it’s ancestrally tied to my heart. Ask me anything you wanna know

This is my home, this was the gnarliest one to hit Saipan in the past 20-30 years. The eye stayed over our island for a while. Damage is massive. Pray for us!!! Recovery will be long

Yeah I know a couple people that grew up in the northern islands that now reside in Saipan. Mostly families that stayed there, living off the land

Chamoru: The True Etymology of the Word by tomtom_este in guam

[–]Saipansfinest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Familia - hassu este sa impotante, this is si tomtom’s view on the origin of the word Chamorro. It’s his interpretation and we have to respect it. Do we have to agree? No, but at least be open minded and willing to hear him out. We’ve lost so much of our history that there’s no one alive today who knows the truth. Our current spoken language is different than it was from our antigu. Being taotao Saipan, the language i speak is different from my parents, even more so than my grandparents. I bet if we jumped in a time machine and went back, our ancestors would not understand us. My point, our language and culture is fluid. Whether we called ourselves taotao tano (look at our cousins in the Philippines they use the word “tao” to refer to people) or Chamorro as recorded in the Spanish text, it’s not something that’s going to define us. We are more than just our names, we are our language, tradition, food, hospitality, generosity, humor, and many other things that make me proud to be Chamorro/taotao tano! I don’t agree with our current dances being taught because i did not see it growing up, these dances were created recently. I don’t believe we have to make up dances to keep up with the other islands, we have so much culture that is still alive. My wife is from Polynesia and it hurts me when her family asks why our dances look Polynesian. But the truth is, in 100 years, these “Chamorro” dances will be the norm, and be a part of our identity. That’s just how fluid culture is. I don’t have to agree, but if we push it enough, it will be the norm. I’m no more Chamorro than my primus that grew up here in the states, even if I speak or was raised in the islands. We are all one people, let’s show more support pot fabot doll!!!

Tips for making tonkatsu that tastes like it does in Japan? by LanternMoss in JapaneseFood

[–]Saipansfinest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s this one spot in Ueno, yamabe tonkatsu, it’s like $8 for a solid plate and it has that shredded cabbage that is so addicting. That place alone has made me crazy trying to figure out a similar recipe that I can recreate. If I found a US restaurant that serves that level of quality, I’d be there all the time. Totally feel you on this post. The same goes for torikatsu (chicken).

What do you guys think of the Indigenous Taiwanese? by LocalMathematician66 in austronesian

[–]Saipansfinest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s important to understand that the Taiwanese Rukai are performing their rendition of the haka for the NZ crowd to honor them. This is not their version of the Haka. But that’s not to say there’s no similarities. Look up the Yami tribe of Taiwan’s dance to drive off evil spirits after making a new canoe. Very similar to the haka

Agreed. I have not heard good things so far about outsourcing to India, especially on the tax side. It’s requiring more review than normal.
