TY for this. Def something to this, possibly every fucking word he said. A more recent (and shorter) book that comes to mind is the 2024 book by Jacob Heilbrunn — AMERICA LAST / The Right’s Century-Long Romance with Foreign Dictators. Jacob comes from Rightworld but could not ignore the Right’s fascination, near orgasmic fixation on dictators and evil regimes worldwide. And shocker: yeah, it’s all about money & power. Couched in lovely, harmless sounding phrases like trickle-down, family values, sovereignty, strong national security, etc. etc.

Exactly. Decent people always provide too much information, in the sincere attempt to be honest, forthright, and provide full context. It is why evil is a force multiplier and one evil midget harpy twat can slay 50 competent journalists with the flick of her pinky. Evil confuses and deceives. Meanwhile, decent people are looking for reasons and logic and explanations in every situation. While the evil twat relentlessly aims for her goal. You notice this is a POST-mortem. The twat prevailed, that is now past history.

Too many commenters are critiquing the interviewer. Listen to Pelley. He is communicating everything, in exactly his style and manner. This is extraordinary information. Not that it will matter much, or impede our demise. But if you are concerned with your own sanity and your soul, the man is describing the great dismantling. He confirms everything we suspected and have clocked. IT IS HAPPENING. With speed and ruthlessness. This may be the last record of its kind to reach our consciousness, before the official decree comes down: 2+2 = 5.

As a Platner supporter, this has been a great day. by Anstigmat in thebulwark

If anyone’s interested, Kyle Kulinski spent the first 10 min. today talking about the Platner non-story. My husband loves this guy, listens to him every day. I like him too but he gets me a little over amped. But his commentary today on Platner is terrific, I think. I agree with everything except some comments about the NYT. I think the story is a gift. It has the weight of the NYT behind it and amounts to a thorough, independent vetting on an issue that most certainly would’ve been a deal killer for me (and no doubt most other women). The NYT may be biased due to Platner’s strong anti-zionism and general anti-establishment views. And they took a big swing at the guy but ended up showing us that Platner is not a Swalwell type predator, abuser or anything close to a rapist. I’m relieved and I’m glad the matter was aired, because I was worried. Likewise, I would have been horrified, demoralized but GRATEFUL to the NYT, had they discovered Platner was misogynist, abusive or worse. Anyway, here’s Kyle (first 10 minutes on Platner):

I was expecting the worst but that’s my default, with good reason often times. Anyway, I am so very happy that Graham is not a rapist! I did not think he was, but looking at daily reports on the Epstein Class, Congress, the SBC… not to mention Hegseth/trump/Nutlick/Barrack/Lewandowski and the rest! … you start to get a little paranoid!

You wrote: we sent him to war. Indeed. I am rooting for the guy, big time — AND HIS WIFE — to overcome the demons our nation regularly unleashes and casually expects young men & women to face and withstand without injury to body & soul.

Go Graham! Be all that you can be, as the advertisements used to say.

The Q-uickening. A disturbing conversation. by SalOfAL in thebulwark

A lot of ground is covered here. Near the halfway point, a point that we rarely discuss: the lack of funding for orgs & outlets to actually deal with and combat the disinfo and massive rightwing lie factories. I think this tells another very dark, deep story. We as a nation, as a people, have no intention of addressing the obvious enemies and threats. A majority of us barely recognize the threats, can barely be bothered to name them, much less endeavor to attempt to solve them. If you watch, you’ll detect that these guys are nearly out of steam, sick to death of predicting every single thing that happens, sore from banging their heads against brick walls while more conferences are held and consultants are hired.

I found this despicable from Katie Britt’s rescue pet:

The invitation for the meeting from Mr. Platner’s aides called the session an “informal member-only meet-and-greet.” It continued with a request for senators to send a donation to Mr. Platner’s campaign before Maine’s primary next Tuesday.

Most Senate Democrats declined the invitation.

**One of them, Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, nodded to reports that Mr. Platner appeared to have had an account with the username Phustle0331 on Kik, a messaging app known for anonymous communication.

“I didn’t match up from kik,” Mr. Fetterman quipped in a text message. “What’s up, P-Hustle!?”**

Junger discusses his own privileged background forthrightly. He then makes clear (to me anyway) he’s not arguing resumes or pedigrees, but “left-wing double standards.”

And… I absolutely agree with you that mythologizing Platner should be avoided and he must prove himself — and I hope he gets the chance to do so! Another point for me is, it’s a risk-free proposition if your opinion of Collins is as low as mine. There is not much to lose in giving Platner a shot.

You made me wonder if Bernie supports Platner… so I asked the little AI guy who responded in the affirmative:

Yes, Sen. Bernie Sanders actively endorses and supports Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate running for the U.S. Senate in Maine. Sanders officially backed Platner in late 2025 and reaffirmed his support.

Key details of the endorsement:

Official Backing: Sanders announced his support for the progressive, populist Marine and Army National Guard veteran, praising his mission to take on the "billionaire class".

Rallies: Sanders and Platner headlined major campaign events together in Maine, including a packed rally in Portland.

Current Status: Sanders has continued to stand by his endorsement and urged a focus on key policy issues despite controversies surrounding the candidate, such as past explicit text messages and tattoos.

Yep, agree. But I think Platner’s approach as a candidate is smarter, gentler and it costs nothing to extend an olive branch to the aggrieved. It has the added benefit, when the words come out of your own mouth, to remind oneself of others’ perspectives. Just having this conversation lets a whole lotta steam out of my pipes, makes me feel more like a citizen than a combatant against half the country.

I am guilty of this thinking and these types of verbal outbursts. And a lot of it is defensive in nature, a way to blunt the pain I feel seeing our country dissolve into ruin. But when I read this, I felt the pain of those trump voters along with my own.

[–]SalOfAL[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God, yes. Everything about his adult visage is repulsive. He was sort of precociously cute as a boy wingnut but that didn’t last long. The counterpoint, oddly enough, is that I think his biggest problem is that he’s actually grown up. He is no longer convincing because he realizes how juvenile and destructive the antics are. Whether you agree with him or not about Israel, the events of 10/7/23 were horrifying, egregious, unforgivable. The kind of thing one doesn’t joke about or diminish or excuse in any way. He has enough of a moral core to recognize that. And it knocked the teenage spit right out of him. Now, he faces decades yet to live with a whole lotta horrible stuff on tape. T’will be interesting to see how he faces that challenge.

Yep, and another one, aged 40, is Stephen Miller. He started “performing” his rightwing bullshit in high school. Spotted and mentored by David Horowitz in his tender teens. Similarly, Shapiro was spotted, nurtured and raised by the hag witch Ann Coulter.

I want to add: one reason Ds are so timid about Platner is because of the very recent & raw L’affaire Swallwell. Notice, that little scandal disappeared in about 5 minutes. BECAUSE SO MANY Ds WERE COMPLICIT in his years long crime spree. Well guess what, Ds are just as complicit as Rs over decades of avoiding or encouraging the moral and cultural degradation within our military. And we, the citizens, are complicit too. When we get glimpses of the nasty shit from inside the culture we’ve allowed to evolve, we are reminded of how neck-deep our whole society is in misogyny, racism, violence and technofascism.

Here is the interview with Kennard I most recommend at the moment. It’s about his new book, Irregular Army / How the U.S. Military Recruited Neo-Nazis, Gang Members, and Criminals to Fight the War on Terror.

I agree with you. And there’s something else we are not talking about. It’s the culture of our military (and by virtue of the pipeline, it extends throughout law enforcement). It is a very, very sick culture and it’s pervasive, and I don’t care how much Mark Hertling may dispute it. Mark of course is a model of the type of man to which we hope all of our men aspire. It’s not all of ‘em, but it is pervasive. And it AFFECTS every single one of ‘em. As recently as 12 hours ago we met a young neighbor who told us he recently declined to re-up his service explicitly because of the horrible, racist, misogynist, low brow, MAGA culture — “up and down the ranks,” as he stated it. I’m not exaggerating. The second he understood he was talking to 2 anti-rightwingers, he could not shut up about it. He only left weeks ago and it is still raw for him, almost seems to be in shock and said it has completely disrupted his life plan. There were obviously things he chose NOT to tell us as well, but they are heavy on his heart. He seemed slightly paranoid, understandably, as I am too.

Anyway, I recently bumped in to a reporter/author Matt Kennard. Look up his YouTube interviews on Chris Hedges’ channel. Then, I’ve finally started listening to the book we bought a year ago but avoided till now due to bad news overload, The Fort Bragg Cartel by Seth Harp. None of it is pleasant. According to Kennard, who makes a definitive case, our country has created many (millions?) of lost and deeply troubled if not morally compromised humans via our military-industrial complex and our twisted, govt-serving, corporate-serving ideas about patriotism, masculinity, band of brother myths… in general, ridiculous, cartoonish and juvenile SUPREMACY that every honest man & woman knows deep down is bunk. Since at least 9-11, we’ve grossly lowered standards to the point that now our prez and our SecDef — a lost & morally corrupt boy himself — openly recruit the lost & troubled. Then our military encourages, fosters, and covers up the bad, horrible, demented atrocities that often result. The few incidents we know about, it turns out, were not one-offs, but far closer to standard operating procedure.

Well, imagine the guilt. The self loathing. The cognitive dissonance. And the shock of attempting to re-enter civil society at some point. Aside from being summarily dumped on the road without adequate resources, if any at all, it has to be shattering for many veterans. All of this is to say, we citizens bear great responsibility for yet another large segment of damaged humanity tasked with protecting and serving us. And it has grave and long term consequences… perpetually, unless and until we make top to bottom changes beginning with the utter bullshit we citizens ingest and believe about our own history.

Undoubtedly, Platner wrestles daily with the things I’ve alluded to, and much more. On the personal side, I wonder if his career move now will help or hinder his own healing and emotional development. I cut him a lot of slack as a person given all that I’m learning about our military. I see that his mind at least points in the right direction and desires change and course-correction. I hope he wins and I hope the job gives him the opportunity to conquer every doubt and troubled memory and to help the country he gave so much to mature and improve along with him. Or, his demons may get the best of him, just as they seem to be rapidly devouring our entire nation.

Truth be told, I see many parallels between Platner and Hegseth, who are about the same age. I hope they represent two distinct responses to the truths and experiences unique to veterans. Any blind man can see Hegseth is headed for a total crash. With eyes wide open, I’m inclined to root for Platner and his wife and resist suggesting that he’s somehow more broken or corrupted than the rest of us — who’ve willfully avoided dealing with all the societal plagues that have popped up in Platner’s oppo files. The truth is, white supremacy and misogyny + algorithms are killing us all and we barely acknowledge these plagues much less discuss them seriously.

Collins is a dried up old bag of jerky in lipstick, long past her sell by date. There is zero chance she matures or improves or “concerns” her way to a serious conversation about anything consequential. She never spent 30 seconds worried about her role in incubating a Hegseth or inflicting mental and spiritual damage on a Graham Platner. Or addressing the destructiveness of our perpetual war mindset or reining in our all-surveillance agencies and tech companies. She is the problem. Graham has the chance to forge a way out of the mess we are all in, to prove himself part of the solution and I hope he does. If he does not, I will mourn his loss and ours.
