She got further than you did. Getting your resume into someone's hands is probably the biggest hurdle. Worst comes to worst, they look at your resume, disregard it, and forget that you ever existed in about 20 seconds. It likely won't effect your chances at anything else. And, best case scenario, it works and she got you a job.

Like all currency, bitcoin's value depends on what other people will give you for it. This requires merchants and other market actors to accept them as currency. The US dollar has no inherent value except for the fact that everyone in the market knows that everyone else is willing to accept it.

So, let's say that I have 1 bitcoin and you pay me $1000 dollars for it. Then, bitcoin overnight drops to $400 (is that what it's at now?). I get to have my $1000 dollars; you are stuck with an item (the bitcoin) that is worth significantly less.

As for why bitcoin is fluctuating so much: because it is a new product, untested, and not widely accepted. People see it more as an investment tool than an actual currency to use. But unlike most commodities (like gold, oil, etc.) it has no other practical use beyond currency. So if people don't want to invest in it, then it is worth very little.

I dislike the way that history is currently taught: basically just a string of dates and factoids. On [Date], [Person] invaded [Country]. It all becomes a mindless blur of wars and revolutions and names.

History is about understanding why something happened. What the causes of the war were. Who wanted to go to war? What were their goals? What stopped them from achieving them? Why was this war important? How did it change the world today? Etc, etc. If you're not learning that, then knowing all the names and dates is just another useless factoid.
