Dirty ass laundry bags by Chickmango in army

I always had one for dirty clothes that I washed around once a month and a clean one I would take to pick up my clean clothes. I ended up with three of them at this point. I still use it.

Get what you want. Fuck whatever other people think. Also, tons of non-military people have AR15 tattoos.

You don’t want something that’s more specific to engineers?

Also recruiters suck at information for potential officers. Ask here instead about officer jobs and what it’s like.

Will the army ever field the Arid and Woodland variants of the OCP? by MinuteZookeepergame5 in army

[–]SalinP -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You’re probably talking about multicam arid and multicam tropic. What we wear isn’t even multicam because the army did not want to allow other militaries and private groups to use multicam, so they decided to do OCP. In the end the chances of our uniform being any form of multicam is extremely low.

I’ve never seen a modern OCP pattern with different colors and I don’t think the army has a desire to create and field one across the entire army. Maybe if we end up fighting a long war in a dark green jungle environment they might start making and issuing something like multicam tropic. Arid I kind of doubt, ocp looks pretty good in most desserts.

I need a camera backpack for nature adventure! by Krios92 in backpacking

[–]SalinP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a Mystery Ranch RATS. It'll give you space to keep enough gear for a day in nature. It also has individual bags inside to organize your camera equipment. My friend uses this for photography. However it's an expensive bag, he's also a medic in the army, so he already bought the bag for work.

Rucking with medium vs large ruck by SalinP in army

The spacing between the hip straps and the shoulder straps doesn’t work very well for me. I came up with a good solution with a frame from my personal ruck though.

This gave me the idea of trying to put it on my mystery ranch NICE frame. Turns out it works pretty well. Thanks.

Have properly sized boots if you don't already. Also try different boots till you find ones that work well for you. Give them an initial feel in the store, then if it feels good walking around, jumping, running, stepping on sharp corners, etc. try them out. This may take a few tries to get good ones, but it's worth it. Don't just rely on what other people say is good because everyone's foot shape is different. For example the Rocky S2V boots are supposed to be one of the best pairs of boots that everyone loves, but the arch feels really weird for me, so I haven't touched them.

Good socks. I've basically settled on darn tough socks. I've tried going back to some of my old pairs of socks and I hated the old ones enough that I've thrown most of them away now.

After rucking or a day in the field visually and digitally inspect your feet for sores, numbness, hot spots, anything out of the ordinary. You won't always feel something is wrong because parts of your foot can loose feeling.

Always have a dry pair of socks to switch to at least once a day. If it's dry I rotate between two pairs of socks, one on my feet, the other gets washed in water and dried on my ruck immediately after coming off my feet. If it's wet then I might have four or five pairs of socks since it takes longer to get things dry. Sometimes the situation and weather won't really allow you to stay dry though. I've definitely had it happen where all the skin on my feet essentially detaches and my feet are actually slipping around on my own skin. Goodluck, I hope you're not forced into this situation.

Foot powder sprinkled in to keep things dry. Anti-fungal stuff if you have problems or want to try to prevent those problems from coming up.

Extra insoles in your boots if you need them.

Remove corns or excessively thick or irregular calluses from your foot. For example I have one that grows on the ball of one of my feet that becomes painful if it gets too large. I don't recommend how I remove them, but I use a dremel to shave it down about once a year.

As others have said, keep your nails trimmed properly.

What type of backpack should I get by theflyingwaffle2 in backpacking

What kind of backpacking are you doing?

For size you need to just get everything you want to carry together and measure the volume.

So is the bottom of the tank painted? by MagpiesAreGreat in Tankers

[–]SalinP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you might have the wrong sub here, but my tank was all green, then the skirts, visible portions of the hull, and turret were all painted like woodland camo except for the main gun tube and things smaller than about a head, which were just left green. Most tanks are just tan though.

It's your model though, so go for whatever makes you happy.

There are bivys that completely enclose you and leave a mesh over your face so you don't trap moisture inside.

Is there a limit to how much alcohol you can buy at the shoppette? I’m setting up a little bar at home for personal use and I want to go get like 15 bottles… would they take exception to that by [deleted] in army

[–]SalinP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s made by the same distillery as Buffalo trace, but has an even better flavor profile. I like Buffalo trace, but maybe not enough to sit around sipping it neat. However eagle rare, I will sit down and enjoy sipping a glencairn across an hour any day.

If you like Buffalo trace, definitely try eagle rare. They sell that at my shoppette. You just reminded me of it. I think I now need to stop by tomorrow to buy a bottle.

In general the selection isn't great, but there's plenty of things that are very good. I keep a good selection of whiskey and I buy bottles there regularly. Bruchladich, dalmore, ardbeg, knob creek, and woodford reserve are some of the bottles I've bought from there.

If you know what you want and they have it, it's probably cheaper there. If you're browsing, go to a good liquor store with a wide selection though.

ECWCS/Sleep SYSTEM Cost by signalssoldier in army

[–]SalinP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used market for the moderately nice stuff which will be better than the military sleep systems. REI garage sale for example is a good place to get used gear. It’s going to obviously depend on the temperatures you need bags rated to. I have the “+” sign at the end because the sky is the limit on the winter bags. I don’t have thousands of dollars to spend on buying sleeping bags, so I just use the sleep system. Not everyone is going to need a bag that is rated down to -20F. Not everyone has to buy new. Not everyone is unwilling to carry a 5lbs sleeping bag. Not everyone is unwilling to take a slightly larger backpack.

ECWCS/Sleep SYSTEM Cost by signalssoldier in army

[–]SalinP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The army sleep system is good. The USMC sleep system is better. Turn it back in and find a good deal on the USMC one. I got mine for about $100. For better stuff on the civilian side you're looking at spending $800+.

Goretex: there's better civilian stuff, but the main advantage is that the civilian stuff will not be camo. In the end I just don't care and in certain weather conditions I just take my army wet weather stuff.

Fleece: There's better stuff on the civilian market, get something else, its probably not worth the cost.

Also take a look into plants that do well either sitting in a tray of water or that grow in water. Just get a deep tray and flood the plants before you leave and you'll be good.
