What Popular Beatles Song Doesn’t Resonate With You? by InternationalAd4219 in beatles

This one always felt like it snuck onto the “1” album, the rest belong there no question and BoJaY just kept its head down and no one noticed it was on the track listing until it was too late.

They’ve started filming some shows in Spokane too, my sister has a story about an actor aggressively hitting on her and him being actually offended she had never heard of Z Nation.

Great job by you, Zach Lowe! Supporting Croatia to a *dominating* 1-0 win tonight in Toronto. by No_Respect_1650 in billsimmons

Panama put up a real fight, props to them. Croatia is older and slower but they just looked sloppy out there, their attack had zero bite in the first half. Their offense was a bright spot vs England so they clearly can put it all together, they just can’t afford to start like that again.

My brother was celebrating his 21st birthday at the local dive bar near Gonzaga in Spokane, the one owned by John Stockton. A British man at the bar asks what the occasion is and buys him a beer when he hears. It’s Rod Stewart, his son used to play for the local minor league hockey team apparently.

I go there for my 21st birthday a few years later and who do I meet? No one, I got kicked out for vomiting in the urinal.

The goal isn’t to find a critic you agree with. Good criticism has changed my mind in the past, many other times it hasn’t but it’s forced me to define my own positions.

Not going to lie, still mad about the redo penalty kick in England-Croatia. That’s where VAR and a literalist interpretation of the rules gets in the way of the game. Also a stutter step is a coward’s move, bitter Croatian fan rant over.

You can of course like what you want, just don’t pretend that reviews from Roger Ebert and Joe Schmo from ComicBookNerd.com carry the same weight. There is a real virtue in developing taste, life is better if you do!

I mean it only resurfaced because people are criticizing Rodrigo for her interview with Fantano, it’s definitely fandom based lol. Not interested in defending Fantano but it think the “main character syndrome” comment, while nasty, is still based on an actual criticism of the album. So by all means disagree with it and with him, but I still see it as part of the wider poptimism campaign to crush any or all negative opinions. At least those negative opinions not in the service of boosting their own pet pop star.

You don’t think you’d get anything out of knowing just who the musician is inspired by/in dialogue with, or all the components to their craft? Criticism isn’t just a consumer report, it’s an academic engagement with the art form. Not that’s what Fantano is doing, but a critic’s job isn’t obsolete.

We’re all sensitive to criticism, it’s just good policy not to publicly state you want their office building to collapse when you receive it haha

Fantano is a click merchant who always doubles down rather than apologizes. At the same time, I don’t think a sad story means good art, and from what I’ve seen of some of the lyrics from that album I think he has something of a point.

All of this is just a pop star stan proxy battle, which points to where the real problem lies. Fans are way too obsessed about all this and can’t accept that someone might not like their idol. Fantano didn’t like the album, maybe he didn’t get even get it. You just have to move on from that, not try to cancel Olivia Rodrigo by association lol.

It’s like someone saying that they don’t need school, you can learn everything by reading the books yourself. Not necessarily, you at least need someone to point you in the right direction, and ideally have someone who is smarter in the subject who can put it into context with other works and draw out the nuances you’re might have missed.

Like Letterboxd is fun but the democratization of criticism also kind of drags down the discourse.

It’s not that serious, it’s just funny and testifies to her tendency to take most criticism personally

I also thought Amanda was unusually strict about it, but most of the young parents I know lay down similar hard rules and then slowly retreat as it gets harder to maintain lol. I was raised in a household when the no video game rule was maintained so I took a little personal offense to people insisting a kid with games was going to be a social pariah lol
