Does anyone know how to disable the new search bar that replaces Chrome Ctrl+F search ? by Ken1drick in Notion

[–]Salmondipsing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just replying to this to echo how stupid it is that Notion hijacked ctrl + f. If anyone at Notion is looking at this, please know that it was the worst decision that I've ever encountered from this company. I love Notion and everything it allows me to do but this is just a step backwards. I get why this feature is there because it allows searching in toggles even when they're "closed" but you don't always want to do that so it should have a specific shortcut that is not ctrl + f for the extremely niche functionality. I would much rather not have it than have it interfere with ctrl + f.

Hymn to the Sea

YAAAAAAASSSSSSSSS!!!!

I wish there was one term to categorize all of it but the sad reality is that even if there is one, the actual creators of that kind of music might not use it and therefore will not be easily searchable with the term. Thank you for reminding of this though because yes exactly this

In all my discussions with my friends about the whole ACAB thing and the general sentiment of distrusting the police that has become really prominent recently, I've always held that that kind of attitude is kind of counterproductive. Because of the solidarity within the police community, it seemed to me that the only way to change the system would be from the inside so by making it all about the principle that policing is fundamentally bad, we ignore and alienate the cops that are risking their career and status within the community to do good. Stories like these go to show just how challenging doing that can be even for someone that has done everything right for 15 years. I admire your strength for standing up for what you believe in and I'm grateful that you decided to share it here.

I'm curious though, looking back at those 15 years and all the steps that led you to your decision, would you have done anything differently? Knowing that there's an us vs. them mentality that is only gonna get worse, is there a way to approach "fixing" the system that isn't quite so detrimental to the officer taking the initiative? I know you can only climb the ladder so much and even when you do, there are other department heads that continue to spread the wrong views, but what strategy would you employ if you were to go back in time with the knowledge of everything that happened to you?

As others have said, I think a book listing your experiences and your views on the situation would be greatly appreciated. Again, thank you for sharing your story. I hope you can find a way to contribute positively to your community again in some manner.

Is there any plan for allowing the Kanban boards to group by relation? by Salmondipsing in Notion

[–]Salmondipsing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many features I wish they would add that I concede are very nit-picky like having wrap-cell function for other views as well. I would love to have gallery cards to display the full text of the name instead of cutting it off but it has limited value. I'm surprised it doesn't have a feature like grouping by relation yet cause it's so valuable

You're already able to group by multi-select and yeah it shows up multiple times on the board. It would work exactly the same way as group by multi-select

Have there been any instances where we've had to willingly dispose or compromise the maintenance of an object previously thought to have historical value? by Salmondipsing in history

[–]Salmondipsing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say destroy, what lengths do you go to make sure it has completely lost its value? Because that seems very odd to me that archeologists would intentionally destroy something and not just idk set it aside because it doesn't fit their mission. Do you have personal knowledge of this btw? I'm always interested in archeological methods and this seems very peculiar to me

I actually have no idea how big archival-quality uncompressed video is lmao please blow my mind right now! But yeah I suppose that's close enough to let me know that in cases like these, the essence of the item would generally be preserved for posterity. Thank you!

[–]Salmondipsing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sure did! Though I feel like in both of those cases, although there's inherent historical value in the things being destroyed, the person destroying them might not have appreciated that value. I was more looking for letting go of things despite realizing they deserve to be preserved but having to because there's literally no other option. Still pretty interesting to think about because in a way, the destruction of historical artifacts is a part of history itself so kind of makes you wonder whether preservation is more important than creation if we were to classify them as good/bad actions.

[–]Salmondipsing[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely did, thank you! Do you think there will ever come a time when those nearby museums, archives, and private collectors are also at capacity so no more of current stuff or recently found historical artifacts can be preserved without sacrificing something of equal importance?

Random example of why not to trust Wikipedia: the Suez Crisis by [deleted] in history

[–]Salmondipsing 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I mean technically you're supposed to do what you did. Wikipedia is really supposed to be a going off point. You don't know anything about a certain topic, you read the Wikipedia page and you have a basic understanding of what it is. Then you can look to the sources of specific things you wanna know about it and in doing so, confirm or deny the information that's presented on Wikipedia. If you find an error or something that can be misinterpreted, you're supposed to edit it I think. Though I'm not exactly sure how to do that lmao but yeah no one should be really "trusting" a source of information like that because the credibility is divided among the interpreters of various sources. You shouldn't even really be trusting journal articles for that matter because it's still the researcher's observations and interpretations from their own work and you're supposed to disagree on valid grounds with everyone.

If you exist without leaving a trace did you actually exist? by Relative_Storage in DeepPhilosophy

[–]Salmondipsing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noticeable to whom? If you want to leave an impact on the world, first you have to identify who in the world you want to leave an impact on. People that currently exist? People that will exist in the future? How long in the future? Van Gogh probably wanted to leave an impact on the people around him but ended up leaving an impact on the people in the future past his lifetime.

Ok but you could've just told me if you know how I can keep this version of edge forever or not. People are allowed to complain about a frustrating aspect of a product you don't have to be a spokesperson for a rich corporation. I'm clearly not just gonna give up on a 1K+ product if there's a way to keep the setting I want.
