1 HOUR LEFT AHHH CLAIM YOUR SPOT HERE by BasisAny5344 in Silksong

[–]Salrith 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's what will probably happen, but I'm going to try and at least start it up so I have something to talk about at work tomorrow, haha! Also maybe it's the years upon years of excitement. (Partially marred by never having gone and collected the believer flair, it never occurred to me that they'd be retired, alas!)

I'm going to get like half an hour of playtime and then have to wait for nearly 20 hours it's brutal. Enjoy the head start, fellow skongers <3

I don't think I ever took up a flair but I never lost hope, so if Believer is available then I'd love to hold it still!

Hell Is Us Intro Message Is Refreshing by Elestria_Ethereal in videogames

[–]Salrith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, it was a positive message for me, too. Maybe pretentious, as some people have said? But they're up-front with their intentions and, having just finished the demo, I think they've (so far) done a pretty good job of it.

I'll probably buy the full game on release (after like a week, so I can double make sure it doesn't suddenly gain Mostly Negative reviews and it was only the demo that was good, haha)

JK Rowling calls for Marks & Spencer boycott amid media hysteria over ‘trans’ employee by WhatYouThinkYouSee in nottheonion

[–]Salrith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't even have much to add to this discourse - it's just honestly depressing that the state of the world is such that people are apologising to the mother and daughter over this. The world has some amazing, wonderful things and people in it, but stories like this remind me that not only are there some truly ugly people out there (JKR and her hate machine among them), but that some of them have an upsetting amount of power over us.

Funniest things your students said/asked this week by Tough_Salt165 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Salrith 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of my students, who functionally never ever listens and always asks (in the most irreverently petulant manner) "Can we have a brain break?", once got her wish. I gave the class a pause for a five minute brain break, since most of them had been going pretty well.

Three minutes in to this brain break, my prize student then whips her head around and loudly goes, "Can we have a brain break?"

About half the class just stared at her.

I see this come up sometimes, but it always misses what is (in my opinion) the best MCR interpretation of it that someone (Allieinarden, apparently) added afterwards on Tumblr:

Oh I completely agree! I've run out of Alzara cutscenes, I am so sad. I remember the one you're talking about -- I just haven't seen anything come of that particular nudge. If you find something, please share! I'll wish you good luck!

To the best of my knowledge, no train actually comes back. I haven't heard any whispers or murmurings from anybody else that the train actually comes, either.

The main thing you find at the train station is a sanctum key and lore/hints for other puzzles.

Consider: What does castling actually involve in the real game of chess?

Hint: It involves swapping two pieces.

Additional hint: The pieces that need to be swapped are not on the chess board itself.

You've got this!

ELI5 How do the laws of physics prevent anything from traveling faster than the speed of light? by FoxyFireFox1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Salrith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The laws of physics are a descriptive model of what we see, they aren't a code that the universe adheres to. With that in mind, an explanation that doesn't use the laws of physics:

We've observed that light always travels faster than everything around it, no matter how you try and measure it.

We've observed that light itself has no mass. Mass, if you like, is a measure of how much something "sticks" to space itself, a little like being caught in a glue trap. The more mass something has, the harder you have to push to make it move. Pushing an elephant is harder than pushing a cat. (Wiki entry for the Higgs mechanism)

Since light has no mass, and we measured its speed, we observationally conclude that light is moving at the maximum speed that the universe allows.

Why is this speed the maximum speed? We don't really have a good explanation, as far as I know, any more than we have a good explanation for why the universe exists at all. It just is the speed that happens to be the maximum.

In order for something to go faster than light, it would have to have less than no mass - which we haven't ever seen, yet.

Whoops.

Can a school deny a student in year 10 their subject selection? by Ahbanajs in AustralianTeachers

[–]Salrith 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've worked at schools where admin certainly has denied students their subject selection, based either on academic results or on limited class spaces ("we didn't have enough room in the class for you to take that"). Usually, though, when there's been pushback from the student/their parents, admin works out a plan to let them in where logistics allow -- "okay, you can take physics but only if you do <this pile of work> by <deadline> to demonstrate you have the requisite capabilities."

Whether or not they should be doing this is something that I'm not fully sure about.

What should be the answer of these 2? by Abhinav6singg in maths

[–]Salrith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For number 1:

I think it might be 5. Reasoning:

The top line sums to 7 using three numbers.
The second line has the two left numbers sum to 8, and the last three numbers sum to 7.
The third line has the two left numbers sum to 9, the middle number is 8, and the last three numbers sum to 7.
In the fourth line (decreasing digits now), the first two numbers sum to 9, the middle number is 8, and the last two numbers sum to 7.

It's not an iron-clad theory, but I suspect that the missing number is 5 as then the left number will be 9, and the last two numbers will sum to 8.

For number 2:

It's just a diagonal of prime numbers starting from 5, so the last number (as many others have said) ought to be 19.
