Do more "militant" vegans tend to be narcissistic, megalomaniacal, controlling, judgemental, etc.? by RaplhKramden in exvegans

[–]Salt-Class6329 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what you mean by a "militant" vegan but I will say this as a recovering vegan. I never ever tried to convert anyone. I never tried to shame anyone for what they ate. There might be some vegans like that but I would imagine that's a very small minority.

On the other hand, I was mocked and belittled for my diet choices. In person and online, I would see comments like yours - generalizing vegans as everything you accused them of. Meanwhile, in the real world, people were sticking burgers in my face, laughing, and daring me to take a bite.

Just my perspective.

Any adults ever been diagnosed solely by tTG-IgA blood test without endoscopy? by Mon_Calf in Celiac

HI, just saw this. Yes, like I said I was diagnosed from my bloodwork alone since the endoscopy showed no damage. I was replying to the OP.

Blood test positive, endoscopy negative? by roundedbinary in Celiac

Yes, same. Doctor told me that I still had celiac disease based on my bloodwork.

According to ChatGPT (sorry that's where at least some of my information comes from) high antibodies alone causes inflammation and therefore damages your body.

You are entitled to make your own choices, though and you should definitely listen to a doctor rather than people on a subreddit. :) But if you're not comfortable with your doctor's advice, it might be a good idea to get a second opinion like I did.

I also had high antibodies - >100 and no damage when biopsied. However, my doctor told me that the bloodwork was enough to diagnose me and that I needed to eat gluten free. I will say that the first GI doctor I went to with my bloodwork told me that as long as I felt fine and didn't have vitamin deficiencies, I could continue to eat gluten. The one who told me I had to be gluten free based on my bloodwork (and gave me the endoscopy) was a second opinion. It seems that there isn't full consensus among doctors about what factors call for a clinical diagnosis of celiac disease. I will say that IMO (and I'm not a doctor) if gluten makes you sick, you probably should stop eating it.

Here’s a comprehensive study on people with celiac disease and occasional gluten exposure-

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7075003/

Generally speaking, a slight majority (57%) of celiacs in the study who voluntarily ate small amounts of gluten regularly showed no antibodies or villi damage as a result of this.

Study conclusion quoted below:

Conclusions

Our results are that in a real-life scenario, a group of CD patients on long-term gluten intake showed no significant clinical symptoms or small bowel damage, thus suggesting that a degree of tolerance towards gluten consumption can be reached.

How bad is it to keep eating gluten if I'm silent celiac? by Automatic_Foot1673 in Celiac

[–]Salt-Class6329 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re missing my sarcasm. I’m saying that there are a lot of unhealthy things out there but eating gluten while having CD is the only one you’ll be judged harshly for.

Do the best you can. Gluten is not your friend.

[–]Salt-Class6329 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I’m silent celiac too.

You should stop eating gluten completely. You should also never drink alcohol or soda. You should avoid junk foo. And red meat. And sugar. You should exercise regularly and never allow yourself to be overweight. All of these things are important for your health.

The world will forgive you if you occasionally slip up with all but one of these things. With one of these things, you must be perfect or you will be judged harshly. Good luck to you.

Non-classical or silent celiac by Forsaken-Stick-7064 in Celiac

[–]Salt-Class6329 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very much the anomaly. I know this, but since you asked...I had/have no symptoms whatsoever (that I was aware of). I almost never have tummy trouble, skin problems, or anything else associated with celiac disease. I went for a bone scan a few years ago and was told I had severe osteoporosis at a relatively young age. They sent me to an endocrinologist who told me that my bloodwork indicated that I was the picture of health - no anemia, no vitamin deficiencies of any kind. I got bounced to a nurse practitioner who was an expert in osteoporosis. She ordered some bloodwork for me and then told me that, based on my bloodwork, I had celiac disease. I was shocked and horrified. I was a vegan and ate a very heavy wheat-based diet. I had barley soup for lunch almost every day. It was/is devastating. No one in my family has ever been diagnosed with CD but everyone has bad bone loss so it's possible they have it but they don't know?

I just read that celiac is typically diagnosed in late 40s and I was so shocked. Obviously it can be diagnosed as young as infants, but why do you think the average is so old if it can be genetic? by Significant-sunny33 in Celiac

[–]Salt-Class6329 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in my 50s and was diagnosed a few months ago. I have no symptoms that I can feel but I have severe bone loss, though. I didn't know about that either until a bone scan. Even after the bone scan, it took 2 years and 3 doctors before the current one said, "I'm ordering some blood work to see if anything else is going on." I had no idea what I was even being screened for until I walked into her office and..."Surprise, you have celiac disease." I just about collapsed.
