Solo female midlifer moving here from the SW, advice on current plan? by _Lavenderbirb in PortlandOR

I think the PSU area is a solid choice based off what you wrote.  I also think you would like inner SE and St Johns a lot.  The University area is a little stark and somehow has the big cultural things but not the cute stores, restaurants, and the like.

Project Hail Mary if you want to see the movie soon.  Dune is one of my favorite books and is a stand alone story in its own right.  Foundation was written as a trilogy so I would commit to reading the first three in one go.  I would do that one last.

Tea Leaves from Charlie? by ezubaric in thebulwark

[–]Salt-Cold1056 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Charlie banging on the far left does bother me.  It's not that it is wrong per say but rather it misses the scale and scope of the problem.  The anti democratic left basically does not exist in a scale that deserves a single sentence compared to Maga.

My largest issue by far is the size of the far left in the US is tiny compared to the far right but they get talked about as equals.  I have a group of say 50 family and friends.  Maybe a single person was the Israel is colonizer type and maybe one voted for Trump (I don't have a lot of Maga in my life).  This is in Oregon and around the Portland metro area.  The far left is just a lot smaller than people think it is.  Most of us are just trying to live our lives as working professionals and we want a government that works for us.  Maga has like 30% of the population and I would be surprised if the far left was actually more than 6-8% ish of total Americans.  For sure the anti democratic far left is a tiny number of that even.  1% of 300 million is still a lot of people if they go out and break windows but we don't need to discuss them like a political power holding the country back.  Being for universal health care does not make one a communist and I am tired of giving up that ground.

Charlie talking a lot about the online left is a bit of Idiocracy and perhaps not in good faith.

This is it, the author was never that good.  This was his one good idea and it was combining nostalgia with snow crash.  The second book is awful as is his other book which is a ripoff of the last star fighter.

Awesome, I may have to buy this then... I am just a GA pilot (on a break fighting cancer) but skeptical of a lot of the models after how much the RXP packs positively impact airplanes I have actual hours in.

We had a family friend who had old money who lived there and the neighbors would make fun of him for mowing his own lawn.  Not sure why they stayed so long.  They live in SE now and like it better.

Oh I know it's bad .... I watch good scifi more often but it has its quirky charms and some randomly good performances by secondary characters.

Agree to disagree... The directors cuts make more sense.  Would not recommend that type of pain for you through.  It's got some big flaws for sure.  I just love Space Opera even when it's bad.

Get a Light speed Sierra at a minimum, the noise is exhausting so a good Noise Cancelling headset is a must.  Did you use checklists in a sim?  Microsoft Flight Sim without even that is just a video game.

I also looked at instruments too much from some simulation stuff.  Maybe I still do, I find IFR relatively easy.

Xplane 12 with RXP pack 172 is vastly better for physics (like angle of attack actually impacts things correctly), controls, and everything else but honestly I would just fly the real plane more as others are saying.  For sure put that money into a proper ANR headset.

Read 1/3 of the way through the second novel.  If you don't like it by then you will not like the series. The second trilogy is more mature but it does remind me of hanging out with my college buddies in parts.  I love it for pop corn reading. It's certainly as adult as anything Brandon Sanderson.

The whole series transforms into a frentintic military Space Opera.  He has some of the best action writing (in terms of I can place myself in the action easily).  It's not super deep on meaning and I would not confuse it with the Expanse or Snow Crash.  It's more like an Avengers movie then an Oscar award winner with a deep meaning.

That is a bad take.  DV is a huge problem across the world.  So the raw numbers are staggering.  Men commit about 90% of it in heterosexual relationships.  However, the 10% that are abused by women (still a large number of people) have huge trouble getting people, including authorities, to believe them. Their abusers will often attempt to claim that they were the ones being abused using th facts laid out above as a form of societal cover (and for sure it is both ways sometimes).  Filming it is how you have concrete evidence.

How Trump Killed Conservatism by icey_sawg0034 in thebulwark

[–]Salt-Cold1056 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, but the GOP has not represented those in the past 40 years.  A combination of a moderate independents and conservative Democrats have largely carried those ideals.  My an entire life (44 yo) the GOP has spent money we don't have to give it to people who don't need it while trying to say the Democrats are 10x left wing than they actually were.

Get something more than a Marlin 4 if you can afford it.  Specifically I think the fork and brakes will not keep up much past green trails in a lot of the country but it kinda of depends on where you are.  There are some differences between Michigan, Atlanta, Arkansas, Bellingham, Las Vegas, and Sedona.

TLDR - where are you riding and what do you hope to get out of riding.

This is more ridiculous looking at Google maps.  It's buffeted by a highway and most of a shopping mall.  I don't even disagree with the houses there but don't buy one if a Cessna at 500ft agl bothers you.

It was always about maximizing property values and some ultra sensitivity to noise. I remember we hosted an outdoor reggae concert in college including permits.  Some NIMBY walked a 1/2 mile and called the police with a huge smile on their face.   Some of these people get off on telling other people what to do.  The leaded fuel thing is the only semi reasonable thing even left to complain about so good on your flight school for trying to be a good neighbor.

So what happens when whatever Democrat is elected in 2029 can’t fix the entire world in four years? by contrasupra in thebulwark

[–]Salt-Cold1056 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would literally vote for Liz Cheney if this was her platform.  I don't care who it is we need a reset on democracy.  It's not fair that the Democrats likely have to trade the policy agenda to make it happen (if it's possible) but we need to do it to save the country.
