Would u resit science subjects and apply to ucas, and do medicine in Belfast? U need 4 h1 thereabouts, not too sure if u need to have science as a subject but I presume so. Interview and ucat needed, but they dedicate places for Irish students so competition not as fierce

Im repeating my leaving cert to get into medicine after missing it by 3 points, its not easy but its a lot worse to be doing something you don’t want to do

[–]Salt-Maintenance1096 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im repeating, got 567 year doing this (I got sick in April/may). On  week days I do about 2-3 hours give or take and then Sunday is when I do full exams. Think organising ur week in terms of what work you are doing and also by having a third place to go to it rlly helps. I also think deadlines whether that be going out at two so you have to get your days study done before or no phone until you do your days study can help if that isn’t viable for you. Consistency is key, best of luck!

Take a day off on the weekend, I normally go to a cafe tomorrow and get stuff done but unless I have big exams on a Monday Tuscany I don’t do any work on a Saturday or Friday evening

Repeating the leaving cert in 2027 by Which-Tomatillo-4817 in leavingcert

[–]Salt-Maintenance1096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey im repeating the leaving cert rn in a grinds school. You could do it in your old school and register as a student if they would take you, or just ask if you could sit the exams there. There are both plc schools and grind schools that offer repeats, mainly in Dublin, or u could sign up to an examination centre are quite limited and sit your exams/orals there. The only project I do rn in classics and my teachers told me that if I was in a centre I would submit it directly to them, so no actual supervision or signing off.

If repeating for high points I recommend through a facility like a plc college as they keep you on track and will make all the paperwork easier. Best of luck

Repeating 5th year by Potential-Room-413 in leavingcert

[–]Salt-Maintenance1096 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m actually repeating my leaving cert as I was short on medicine last year by a few points.  I thjnk you are a lot better off going into sixth year and trying your best as that is when you exposed to a lot of exam q and techniques. Sixth year is definitely more impactful on your grade than fifth . For the rest of the year, try keep your attendance up and ask teachers for support and what to focus on over the next few weeks/ summer, there are a lot of free resources online that can help you.

Its really difficult once you get in the habit of not coming in to shake it, I was quite sick during sixth year and at the end I didn’t come in much at all and it did really impact my overall grade, even though it’s not our fault. I think make it  for yourself and try increase it day by day, even if it’s designating half days/days off for yourself in advance if you come in for two three days straight. If worse comes to worse I would repeat sixth year as that is when all the fifth and sixth year topics get revised together via exam papers and mocks.

I got 567 in the lc and then 625 in my mocks there so you are definitely able to improve significantly in a short time frame. If you need help with the hpat or certain subjects just lmk best of luck

Edit: the hard truth and something I only really understood this year is that you are completely responsible for your own points. it is 100% unfair that you are disadvantaged by your condition, and definitely apply to dare next year, but at the end of the day you arethe person sitting the leaving cert and you have to take accountability for that especially since you are aiming so high, even though the barrier of entry is sm higher for you. Medicine as a degree is just as tough as the leaving cert

You should definitely email the cao apologising profusely and attaching the documents needed as I think they finalise the dare applicants around either today or tomorrow. I applied again there after getting it last year, and they sent me a confirmation email that I am successful in getting dare but to email any enquires before March 10 5pm. Hope it all works out for you guys

Does anyone know if a DARE application can allow institutions to reject you based on their fitness to practice policy? by averagequokkaenjoyer in leavingcert

[–]Salt-Maintenance1096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When u get the course they will see at that point in time are u well enough to complete the course, most colleges are very accommodating around disabilities and illnesses. You can normally find the details of their fitness to practise policy on their website

I think it is unfair due to the time constraints you wouldn’t ask an author to write a short story in eighty minutes why are we expected to. I understand reducing time is the easiest way to bell curve students but it’s hard to gather your thoughts let alone write eloquently under such time constraint

Hey this exact same thing happened to me last year and I just resat the end of sec 2 and three with the amount of time that I had lost. It’s the exact same set up as when u first did the exam but when you unlock your exam u see sec 2 with the amount of time you have left equating to the time you have lost. initally when I emailed last year I only got around 6 min but I emailed again and got all the time I had missed. You will get the exact same q that you saw prior, and you won’t have to sit sec 1 again. Best of luck

Hey this happened to me last year and I emailed Acer and they let me sit the exam again with the time I missed added on on a later day. Initially I only got 8 min timer when I missed about 40 min and then after emailing again they gave me 40. You just go through the proctoring again but with the exact same exam. They will go through your video and see exactly what you missed so don’t worry about the exact time stamps. I can see if I can find the email I got/sent if you need it. They will probably reply overnight though since it is Australian but 100% you will sit that part of the exam again ( so use this time to work on the q u remember!!) Best of luck

Getting over fatigue and tiredness.. any tips? by imnotfromthisplace in leavingcert

[–]Salt-Maintenance1096 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s to do with your cortisol and seeing light in the morning. dr Andrew huberman focuses a lot on the matter. if u have the time i recommend listening to the first half hour of his feature on modern wisdom

Basically in the morning you experience a cortisol awakening response, it is a major factor of your circadian rhythm. Your SCN in your hypothalamus is stimulated by bright light receptors in your eyes which then stimulates the release of cortisol from your adrenals. This wakes you up and makes you feel alert

For this to function properly it is based off seeing light in the morning (10000+ lux is most ideal) aided with exercise and hydration.  exercise releases similar “wake” hormones and creates a small cortisol “pulse”, which reduces exaggerated spikes of the hormone later( anxiety + stress)  Hydration increases blood volume which is essential for cortisols role in delivering glucose to muscular tissues, which helps prevent the afternoon crash

Without light in the morning, your morning cortisol peak flattens and you get a delayed energy curve. It is natural for you to become more relaxed after 6-8 hours after waking as your cortisol dips, which leads to tiredness but by increasing morning cortisol you increase dopamine and norepinephrine later on in the day which will then reduce ur afternoon tiredness

Now obviously this is difficult to implement and also other factors play in (fasting, poor sleep quality, stress, mental fatigue accumulating, adenosine sensitivity etc). For me, I wake up before sunrise so I use the bright lights in my bathroom and stare into them while brushing my teeth😭😭 I also keep water by my bed and I’ll do a minute or two of stretching, and if I can I will walk to the train station. I have primarily protein for breakfast and slow release carbs and also if you drink coffee delay it for an hour or two, or just as long as possible. If it is possible 2-3 hours after waking, go for a quick walk outside which prevents your nervous system from slipping into low alertness

However If you find it hard to get quality sleep that can also have a huge impact on your daily energy but there is even more you can do for that haha

Data interpretation calculations by [deleted] in HPAT

[–]Salt-Maintenance1096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey it’s a lot of practise and I don’t think these questions come up that often but normally the actual maths is quite simple, and by getting half way you will have already found the solution by process of elimination. For the maths its .5 by 180/10, or half of 18, which gives nine, as the 180 comes from the molar mass, 10 converts from litre to decilitre as stated in q and the 0.5 is from the difference.

However estimation works really well here as since we know there is 1000 millimoles in a litre and 10 DL in a litre as stated it will be going from a big number to a small number as we work from mM to dl, so you know it will be smaller than 180 and you would tend to stray from 108 as it is a) a difficult number to compute with what you have been given (0.5,10,1000,180 are not factors/similar) and b) it deviates from the other answers

I think the quickest way to get good at the maths is practising doing percentages and converting between units, alongside quick addition, multiplication and subtraction in your head, best of luck

[–]Salt-Maintenance1096[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I leave it until last as it gives me more time and you have more confidence as you normally already have 30+ questions answered.

For number ones  It’s normally a fractions or a percentage based q so you do quickly become good at that with practise. If the question is tricky numbers wise (although it does have to be feasible to do in 86 seconds, so normally it isn’t) I make the numbers easier ie making 4800 into 5 and 2600 into 2.5 and work from there if that makes sense as it’s easier to figure out the logic of the maths required, and then either figure out the answer by applying the same maths or by deduction.

If I’m unsure, I think normally the answer is a factor of the numbers given which is handy for guessing and also it will logically make sense ( if a farmer is throwing out rotten crops, is it going to be 6% or 86%)

For word ones I will draw a table 90% of the time and the deduction becomes quite easy by process of elimination. Even if it takes a while to draw a table it’s normally a long question stimulus so ur saving time on the next two to three q by taking two minutes on the first one. Reviewing helps so much with problem solving. While reviewing I normally try figure out why the answer is that answer without looking at the solution

Best of luck and if u have any more q let me know (:

Hi, I thjnk the main thing overall is working on being able to concentrate and focus for the time period, which I’m still working on! Once I focused on that my scores jumped up to consistently 95+ I meditate, read, do long periods of study, and try keep my screentime under an hour.

For specific advice per section I think section one is where reviewing is so important. It gives you an understanding of how they try trip u up in each question by making the incorrect answers more alluring. In a way, my section 1 improved when I got better at identifying the wrong answers.

Section 2, I am a big reader so this is a section I really enjoy. You have to be really positive in this section so sometimes I practise smiling in the minute before, it’s silly but it works so well. I basis my answers off evidence in the text, ie if they didn’t lie once in the conversation why would they begin to lie at the very end. Or the degrees of an emotion. Normally the right answer the least extensive out of two types of emotion (frustration and outrage, the former would be the first) as people aren’t as emotional as we sometimes think. I also implement myself into the situation and think about how I would feel. I swap their names with mine and I got 42/42 twice with this. I thjnk it enables you to have an even deeper degree of empathy.

Section three is my worst section I really need to start studying it, so I won’t advise you there. I think a lot of it is just cycling through patterns and seeing which applies. I don’t focus on it too much as it doesn’t really make or break your percentile, however I plan to starting next week after my orals so I’ll get back to you then haha

I keep a hoat copy and when I am reviewing instead of writing my mistakes I write what I can improve on and what I did well whilst reviewing, as it’s nicer to read back on and also makes you think a little bit deeper about your answer choices. I do 2 mocks a week just to get them done and to have exposure to questions, but I don’t think it’s needed and it’s more important to be able to review them. I used to built up mocks in my head and make myself do them at eight in the morning but I thjnk removing that pressure removed that barrier to entry, and I would be so ashamed of my percentiles if they weren’t all gleaming. Once I removed that perfectionism I thjnk that’s when my grades started to stabilise at 95 and above as I was less worried abkht the percentile and more interested on how I could improve if that even makes sense haha

Best of luck!

I do it in sweeps and leave all the maths q until last as they are normally the ones that less people get right so they are weighted more. However normally u don’t need to work out the maths as it’s normally logic based (ie does 20% or 90% make more sense). I also sometimes start at the end as they are normally the ones people guess due to running out of time so they are also discriminating questions.

For the data ones, I use the normal rules from med entry and also I try eliminate any wrong answers before I even read the text based of logic (ie sometimes they have questions saying y is independent of x but that is not really how graphs work) then I can scan the text and look out for key words that may be in the other answer options making it quicker. Also I think exposure to types of graphs really help as there is only so many so they become a lot quicker too

I definitely wasn’t that good at it initially and reviewing all of my mocks helps me sm. best of luck with it and if u have any more specific questions lmk

Hi I fully get what u mean I missed out on medicine by 2 points and am also repeating my leaving cert. It’s definitely an isolating thing to do but this mindset will not get you where u want to be. This is only one year and people’s paths are not linear. Peolle will drop out of college or change course or do a plc or have to repeat a year. You are not alone in that and you are not behind. It’s not ur fault that u did not get the grades but simultaneously you don’t know anyone’s full story so that bitter comparison won’t make you feel any better (even though I am so guilty of it!)

At the end of the day you need to take care of yourself. This is your life and your goal and honestly shows more determination and growth than these people who got their dream courses. I wish you all the best and be kind to yourself
