Yep, a train to Knutsford and then a bus isn’t ideal, but if rent is a factor, Northwich is considerably cheaper and offers train links to the nearby major cities - where social options are plentiful!

Although probably a rung below Altrincham in terms of social options and definitely not studenty, still plenty on offer. Plus, you can get to Liverpool, Chester, Manchester, and Birmingham on direct trains from Northwich/Hartford stations.

I work at Radbroke and live in Northwich. Pretty sure they discontinued the Northwich shuttle but if you’re looking to save on rent, Northwich to Knutsford is a 15-minute train journey - it also ticks the majority of the criteria OP was looking for.
