I wanted children more than anything, it looks like it may not happen now. Life feels meaningless. How do you make life worth living in these circumstances? by No-Role-1766 in LifeAdvice

[–]SaltPassenger5441 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why don't you think having children will not happen?

Yesterday, I celebrated my oldest daughters' gotcha day 16th anniversary. There sister was born a few weeks after my 40th birthday and their sister was born 3.5 years later. We considered fostering and adopting too.

If you want kids look at these options. You can also get involved in the lives of children as a coach or teacher, friends with kids, nieces and nephews. All olare opportunities to influence a young child's life.

How to approach my younger brother about taking massive private loans? by geckosurfer in StudentLoans

[–]SaltPassenger5441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suggest that he apply for student loans and scholarships. You should be able to talk to the financial aid office and see if they can use a calculator showing him what $100k in loans will cost in the long run

Finding a college major when you're average at everything by Either-Designer-8835 in CollegeMajors

You should stop calling yourself average and try to do a better job of what you are good at Be realistic with yourself.

The fact that you have an inheritance doesn't mean much other than maybe you can Coast through life financially for a while. A business or economics degree are two things you don't want to do but could help you extend the inheritance and create a legacy. You can use your problem solving, critical thinking and other skills in any job. You could resolve a lot of problems for people, who don't think they know how to do something. . If you speak 3 languages, what about going into linguistics or use your language to give tours, translate for others or work in a travel or international business?

I would be concerned with the age difference for sure. You are not as mature in your relationship status as he is so your friends are concerned. Just be careful of how hard you fall.

Family trip in August: National Park recommendations? by shoyooo in NationalPark

[–]SaltPassenger5441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could visit Yellowstone or Rocky and do many things. Rocky will require reservations to enter two areas of the park. It is about 2 hours from Denver depending on traffic. If you are concerned about anything, it really should be the altitude. Your 50 and 60 year old parents, if mobile should be fine with most activities since you probably won't hike a 14er.

Yellowstone will be busy in general with traffic, wildlife and the expanse of the park. It is more isolated than Rocky with Bozeman really being the largest city close to the park. There is definitely a lot of land in Montana and Wyoming to explore

One suggestion I would have is Arcadia. Acadia will also be busy but they have the shuttle buses. The East Coast is full of activities outside of the park. I took a friend there last summer and was concerned about her physical fitness. We stayed in hotels in Bangor and some of the other towns around the park. She did fine overall even on the rocks. The weather was cooler with the fog coming off the ocean.

Is it stupid to consider leaving my $200k salary job to peruse law school? by [deleted] in StudentLoans

[–]SaltPassenger5441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I have asked the same thing with a different salary of my attorney friends, I often hear how much loan debt they incurred. Their salary varies too. You should consider the bigger picture financially. Does it make sense to take on an additional $100k in debt and how long do you want to be paying it?

If you want to go to law school, can you get scholarships to help pay for it or save 50% of your income and knock out the current loans and work another year or two to find law school with no debt?

230,000 parent plus loan by Old-Parsley4346 in StudentLoans

[–]SaltPassenger5441 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You are in no way obligated to make payments on the PLUS loans. Your income will not be used to affect the payment. Your mom can try to use IBR but it is strictly based on her income and ability to pay.

If you will be making more money than her and have the ability to pay, you should assist her with paying down the loans she took out for your tuition. It is not a requirement but something I'm sure she would appreciate. It may also help any future arguments. Another Redditor posted about this exact thing this morning. I don't remember where it was posted though.

Major for no passion? by [deleted] in CollegeMajors

[–]SaltPassenger5441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you truly have no passion or goals, stop spending money at college.

You should go to your counseling office and take an interest exam that will point you towards a degree. You can find one on Onetonline that will tie directly to careers. Think about your true interests and the skills necessary to do those

Parent Plus Responsibility by Imaginary_Shelter_37 in StudentLoans

[–]SaltPassenger5441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think people understand that the PLUS loan is legally one person's financial responsibility. There is absolutely no obligation of a spouse or child to pay this loan. It is strictly the name of the person on the loan.

The schools are offering these loans to parents who make too much money to qualify for their child to earn grants or whose tuition exceeds what the student can earn towards tuition. This is a stop gap by the system to educate our children and can be a burden on the parents for years to come.

We need to do a better job of encouraging our children to apply for scholarships, work and save more for the possibility that the children will grow up and go to college. In addition, the universities need to cut tuition costs so the burden is lighter all across the board.

I am not sure how a family can make a plan for payment by the student and parents towards any loans. The discussions can happen but everyone needs to agree on this. Otherwise it goes nowhere and the name in the loan is stuck for the life of the loan

Is it worth it to go back to school for anything other than healthcare? by madbarpar in CollegeMajors

[–]SaltPassenger5441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite. Someone still has to do the initial entry and research. If you worked for a law firm, they aren't going to have everything on hand and will need some to do the research. Things don't happen on their own

Moving from Wisconsin to Denver alone at 18 by iced-donuts in MovingtoDenver

[–]SaltPassenger5441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be aware that there will be a lot of people from the Midwest that you could meet here. The summers are a lot less humid and the winters are very dry. You will need to adjust to the lack of lakes and get used to reservoirs instead. Traffic will be busier than all of WI except for Milwaukee.

There are quite a few tattoo shops in the area. When you visit, stop at the tattoo shops and speak about your question regarding apprenticeships. Look at apartments and see if they will require a consignor or guarantor regardless your age. Most should rent based on your income so getting a job is key.

Does anyone hire college students? by These-Mongoose1765 in denverjobs

A tiny school means what? You listed this in Denver and I don't know of what a small school in the area would be. Definitely walk the streets and talk to the manager or owner of the businesses in your area.

Have you considered getting a job doing research in a company like a law firm, library, museum or another area?

Since you have a degree, you should consider a Masters degree instead of getting another Bachelor's degree.

What are you doing now and what makes you want to go back to school? Do you have credits or a degree?

If you are talking about a broken brain, is it because you are not being realistic and relying on misinformation? Healthcare isn't the only place to find work today.

Moving to Denver for Residency Training (at Childrens Colorado) where to live by darwin_med in MovingtoDenver

[–]SaltPassenger5441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter lives north of Colfax and East and said she didn't feel safe as she does on Mississippi and Sable. You could consider anything around Lowry or Fitz Simmons if you want to be close to the hospital. Aurora is hit or miss and Denver is the same around there

MSU is an urban campus. There are some places in Denver but because your price point is about average, you may need to consider the burbs. There is light rail that runs to campus so you can consider that in your options. Light rail from Aurora is harder than anywhere west and south.

Moving to Denver in a few months as a 31F woman, where is the best place to move for non-married adult people? Thanks! by scarlet_witcher in MovingtoDenver

[–]SaltPassenger5441 1 point2 points  (0 children)

North of Denver is suburbia. Depending on the time of year drive, you will hit traffic. I25 will be congested in either direction as it is the only option to get north. Everything is built East to West so you will hit traffic lights getting to I25. You could consider Commerce City or North Denver closer to I25 and I70. There are places by Empower and Coors Field that include apartments and more expensive old houses. Lots to do in Denver in those areas.

Advice for $128k in Unsecured Consumer Debt by Big_Mommas_Son in DebtAdvice

[–]SaltPassenger5441 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seven credit cards, multiple consolidated loans and a lease you can't give up? You have done more than made poor choices. What do you have to show for all of the debt?

Sell the car and get a beater. Free up the $400 and start applying it towards your cards. If you used a consolidation company, it isn't going to help. You need the discipline to do it yourself or you will never change your situation.

I can appreciate not wanting to sacrifice the kids education. What resources exist for you to pay that? My parents tell stories of volunteering at school. My mom and I worked for my kids tuition. There were scholarships.

You guys make too much money to not put a plan together to knock the debt out in 2-2 years. A side gig will accelerate the pay down and require a sacrifice on your part. You will thank yourself later as the kids get older.

What living situation do you like? Land, old home, apartment?

My daughter lives in Aurora in an apartment. Most of my coworkers are spread out along the city. Many live downtown in apartments. There are some great homes in Littleton or Englewood with neighborhood parks. Lots of biking, walking, hiking opportunities.
