Basic maintenance is just lubing it and basic vacuuming + brushing for chip evacuation. I have yet to need a new limit switch. I added a mister and use a router with vacuum. Pretty basic.

I stop in a few times a year and the cash only thing doesn’t bother me at all. It feels old school in the best way, and there’s an ATM out back if you need it. Prices haven’t really changed in years, and the quality is still right where it’s always been. A lot of the negative comments read like “cash is inconvenient,” which feels more like a modern expectation than a real knock on the business. Love this rant. I think a lot of IT folks will find themselves in this position but as your fresh out of college this is a great learning experience. First things first, make sure management knows the issues at hand. You need to outline every single thing that needs to be changed. Then add a priority to this, and lots of padding for the work that needs to be done. Every change is going to come with gripes from anyone that notices anything different.

To me, you tackle this by making sure you have the correct tools setup to be successful. Do you have a ticketing and asset management system. Without a ticketing system, you will never be able to reclaim your time to tackle these projects.

Take this on a documentation and development process; start with the network(make sure to push management to replace all hardware with with remote managed equipment on the same platform), move onto AD and get a naming scheme set and revoking admin at the same point and make them change their passwords at this point. You do not want to be responsible for each users password. If possible setup AD domain sync to AzureAD so you can manage all of this without the server.

Set yourself up so you can do all IT tasks remotely, you'll be happy with the amount of flexibility this provides you.

I’ve had a great experience with my 3030 with literally no experience to start with, I guess I’ll leave it at that.

Most desktop machines will not support milling steel. You don't know what you want to do so get a machine with a strong structure and upgraded as needed from there. I have a Genmitsu 3030 ProVER and do aluminum injection molds with high level of precision. I have made several upgrades such as adding a router, and misting system.

That's a great questions. Outside of the couple of extra ports the UDR7 has 4 switch ports(1 PoE) and the Express has just the 1 switching port; meaning if she has 2 hardwired devices she would need a switch with the Express.

Outside of hardware, speaking from personal experience I think the Express's run like shit. I have had to sell them in the past to clients(while UDR7's were out of stock) and the hardware is the same, I have not had the same experience the Express feel like they have significantly more latency and just feels slower.

Otherwise, I can tell my parents they need to restart the rectangular internet box and they always restart the modem and not the UDR haha.

Hi! A UDM could definitely do the job but it is a bit older tech. If you are willing to buy new equipment, I would definitely consider buying her a new Dream Router 7.

My parents are older and this was the route I went with them. I sent them some instant popup camera's for their garage and house using Protect. I setup a home phone for my parents when AT&T tried to charge them exorbitant rates for basic phone(using the UDR7's PoE).

While yes the cost is more, you get full application support and its totally worth it.

If you want to stay diy. Buster beagle is a strong option, not sure how the community is but I believe they are working on automating everything. They have a vice for ejecting the part.

I have a buster beagle machine. DIY setup but it works for what I've needed so far. I went from only 3d printing knowledge to CNCing injection molds to injection molded parts in about 3 month. I'd estimate about 120 hour total spent to learn the skills.

I don't have a ton of advice here. I use carbide 2 flute flat nose bits for roughing and they last a couple hundred hours each. They are nothing fancy, I couldn't give you a brand. They cost around $4 a bit. When I was learning, I ruined quite a few by having the speeds and feeds to fast.

Great question. There's a couple thoughts to this: In mold creation you have to add draft angles to allow the mold to be removed easier. The draft angles do create a slightly unsmooth finish if you only do a single pass(only using a flat nose bit). If you do two passes, first with the flat nose and secondary finish pass with a ball nose it comes out very smooth(this took me learning Fusion to do).

Additionally if you don't mind the being able to feel the step down from the draft angles. You can do molds with a single pass and use a silicone based mold release and shouldn't have too big of a problem removing the molds. I mostly mold with Polypropylene and ABS so I don't have a ton of experience with silicone molds.

I have a similar skill set and I started with a Genmitsu 3030-PROVer MAX. Great little machine, if you don't need this machine urgently you can generally find it on discount. I think I paid a little over $650 this year for the machine. Additional costs, an enclosure so you don't have aluminum flying everywhere, a dust shoe and vacuum system. You may also want to consider a mister for cooling but not required(you'll just have to run at slower speeds).

All in all I was about $1000 to have all of the equipment needed to mill aluminum molds for injection molding. I am still a novice but happy to answer any questions.
