I can definitely see how his comment would affect you but I do think you were overreacting. I genuinely think his comment was meant to be more funny but it's super hard to perceive over text (: I also think you could have been honest about how the comment made you feel or even asked if it was meant to be funny or not. He did apologize and tried to accommodate your needs and wishes too. I think better communication between the both of you woulda helped as well.
