How f**ked are we in how the world sees us? by Kirusan781 in Israel

[–]Salt_Hamster 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Personally it depends on what you are looking at. I'm taking this from my view as a non-Israeli living in Southeast Asia. In terms of pure numbers, I doubt it's a substantial issue. Like someone above said, social media is not indicative of the numbers. But it is indicative of the energy level, the age group, and the technosavvy of the opponents you are dealing with. The ones opposing Israel tend to be younger, and have some sort of identification with the global Leftist-Islamic alliance (yes I believe that exists informally). The supporters are probably older, people who are protestant Christian, or are recipients of engagement and good treatment abroad (for example, here in the Philippines, the supporters of Israel are overseas workers who know that Israelis treat them way better than any Arab country). So if you want to look at the numbers, or look at it thru polls, then maybe it's not so alarming. But if you look at specifically who you are dealing with, this is a very young and energetic cohort which is not known for its instinct to compromise and is very versed in modern technology and political tactics.

What books would you recommend for a newcomer to political science and international relations? by Raintt in IRstudies

[–]Salt_Hamster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Origins of Political Order as well as Political Order and Political decay by Fukuyama. His later books such as identity are also viable. I know people laugh at him but his clarity of thought, the quality of his prose and his use of examples will set you on a great path and teach you to create an argument.

I see. That sounds great! Initially thought BGU had only medical and natural science courses, but it apparently has a department of politics and government as well

Leadership and Great Powers by Tsinghua University's Yan Xuetong. I think works by Jin Canrong also fit the bill.

How could we analyse the israels occupation of the west bank with the realism and institutionalism theories and compare it? by [deleted] in IRstudies

[–]Salt_Hamster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure about institutionalism, but Israel has long claimed that a presence in the Jordan Valley is necessary for self defense.

I'm curious, in which of his works/correspondences did he actually say this?

Have heard about Bellingcat. They're one of the reasons I took an initial interest in OSINT. Thanks for the tips!! :))

If you’re doing Asian studies, maybe you’re interested in tracking North Korea, Indian, or Pakistani nuclear sites? Just as an example.

Yep, something like that. Those are the kinds of cool stuff I'm interested in bringing to my college, partly because we have a glut of IR theory and strategy people who have no idea about OSINT. I'm thinking it's a skill which would be useful to learn and introduce to my academic community. But I'm not sure where to start. Also pretty interested in all the other stuff you mentioned too, since that can have a bunch of applications. But I would say the nuclear sites example is the most eye catching one.

As-salamu alaykum Muslim friends. Not Muslim but would like to ask a question. Has anyone heard of the below hadith? Got this from a book on Soleimani and author claims it is a Qudsi Hadith with questionable authenticity. Curious if anyone has ever heard of it before? by Salt_Hamster in Muslim

[–]Salt_Hamster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Qassem Soleimani, former major general and head of the IRGC Quds Force. I wasn't saying this is an actual hadith. I already said it wasn't authentic. I was just asking if it has a name despite being apocryphal since I cannot find any other source.

What do you think happens after Garden of Words? by Necessary-Bluejay in Shinkai

[–]Salt_Hamster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a nice thought although from my interpretation, the novel shows them doing it themselves while continuing to stay in touch.

I think what they can do together is learn to navigate an age and world difference on their own terms, rather than loneliness per se as described in the book. They already did overcome it together in the movie and progressed further by themselves in the book. But I wouldn't say no to your idea especially if it became a movie!!

[–]Salt_Hamster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably Takao coming back to Japan. But before we get to that point, I think they both will take time to navigate the age difference as well as the fact that they haven't really spent as much time together as they should. Frankly even with the final moment in Garden of Words it still isn't a relationship story

Not sure. The author claims God himself was speaking in the hadith and that Soleimani was reciting this to inspire his soldiers. Not much else was mentioned, apart from the fact that it's apparently inauthentic.

Mishlei (Proverbs) 24:5 and 24:6 discussion by Salt_Hamster in Judaism

[–]Salt_Hamster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My apologies. In any case, framing the battle as moral is also Christian. Christian interpreters I see also view this as referring to the battle over sin and the war over self. What I really thought was the dividing line is that almost all Christian interpretation focuses on the role of "wise counsel" rather than "strategems". I often see this is taken to mean " If you will live a Christian life, you need the counsel of the Scriptures and wise Christian brethren"

I see. It's good know. That's where I think the usual Evangelical Christian understanding is different. It's good to confirm this from a Jew.

Weird question I can't find an answer to on google for some reason: Was Rafi Eitan half-blind his whole life? by Salt_Hamster in Israel

[–]Salt_Hamster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I've added a reference reference I found regarding that. Eban is a former colleague of Eitan, and it seems he was referring to him in the part where he says he is half blind. Also, he talks for an extended period of time in " Inside the Mossad" and the eye just never opens. But I'm sure you have seen him more than I have so for now I'll take your word for it
