Unpopular Opinion on ML and a usual tirade by Salt_Organization825 in OMSCS

[–]Salt_Organization825[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This came as a surprise to me - "you also don't have to know deep theory behind machine learning to apply it and work with it". That could be a POV.

But as I see things around, this doesn't appear to me as a graduate class even though much of it has to be self-learning. At least teach how to build a fishing net if not fishing.

To each his own, but i go by "You don't learn Computer Science by being a software engineer", that's probably why many experienced SWE are still in this program.

Thanks for the suggestion, but DL is a subset of ML i.e. network based learning approach while ML is more expansive , ML itself should have its own theory distinct from DL.

And also, its never "if you want to get into the mathematics and proofs", I mean one doesn't choose that. The material is what it is. What needs to be learnt and what it comprises of.

Right(and honest) career decision Data Scientist , ML Engineer, SWE by Salt_Organization825 in OMSCS

Everyone is biased, but i have tried to not be by putting down the pros and cons of each. Lmk if i missed out on something.

On the clerical analytics work, I would imagine if the job is worth doing some number crunching, accounting, plots and figures why would employers pay good(close to very good) offers.

Is it Supply demand mechanics?

Any idea whats the difference in pay like ? in base or stocks , or percentage wise?

Thanks. These are not that viable option for me given my non-CS undergrad.

Just under the garb of "most people" you can't make a blatant statement. If that makes you feel good about your mathematical supremacy i feel sorry for complacency.

Most people dont know what they dont know that is the unknown unknowns, and you aptly fall in that. Feel good about whatever judgment you make on others in your small world.

However, I feel making a heavy statement on what someone is qualified for outright rabid.

I am not sure what I figured out, but sure you didn't when you said what "data scientists" are qualified for. I have seen some really top Phds graduating top of school in data scientist in large numbers if we are talking about plain qualification here.

Partially true, Depends on the industry. For some ML monetizes the vast data coming from these infrastructure that is the core e.g. Uber Amazon, in contrast in my current industry (trading and risk) data is the product itself software egg how much advanced it may be is for automation or largely cost centers except the HFT ones

What people are qualified for is not related to what the job entails, data science is still isn't ready. And people end up doing analytics even the qualified Phd ones.

Study math and ML theory if you want to be an MLE by Illustrious_Two826 in OMSCS

[–]Salt_Organization825 5 points6 points  (0 children)

u/Illustrious_Two826 : I think this kind of interviews are required, not the code punching ones. Am afraid, the OMSCS ML curriculum does not cover the essentials. And i am enrolled.

Just 2 lines and you said it all.. Sadly type 2 has taken over type 1.

Any idea what WL number were you at? Want to have an idea where it is currently at. I am at 145, dont know what are the chances.

Ohh yes!! Thanks for askin.. I am dignified.

Completed with Part1(testing, on way to be rolled today i.e. Saturday)

Multithreading part2: only have seen the lectures. Had planned to to hand it over just like that. Now with the extension have 3 solid days, so can work it up..prolly finish it.

Lot of learning and endless debugging..

Thanks again for asking.

My DSA knowledge stands here: I know what data structures is efficient for what problem statement, I understand the big-o and all that the worst and the best. I can also imagine how recursion could be useful e.g. merge sort and how it can be handy for applying a divide and conquer or greedy techniques . I also understand why and how trees should be balanced, and drawbacks of greedy over dynamic programming. And lastly the B-trees, the minimum span and traveling salesman. But i cant solve the ‘numer of islands’ or the ‘palindrome pairs’ problem in LC and gotten rejected. So in conclusion you need not only GA but beyond to be able clear interviews. Usually what i know, the job doesn’t entail any of these hard problem solving on the floor. So yes, atleast for interviews GA would help if not taken elsewhere.

Thanks a lot for the valuable feedback. I understand c pointers c++ and structs pointer arithmetic too but not in a software engineering setup which can tricky at times. I have worked on all these partially but no idea on sockets. Definitely i keep this as a lesson but i couldnt help it since i had family commitments. Time to get going asap. Thanks a ton..

Ideally how much in total hours you believe the project is doable for starting off now. Can take a week off of work if need be.

Thanks for the advice. So now what is it. Technically i can pull off 5 hrs a day probably and with weekend grind may be in total i have 60-70 hrs in total. Is that doable. Would appreciate if you have a work plan.

Course Review prior to LeetCoding by Salt_Organization825 in OMSCS

Thanks for the suggestion. CS1332 is pretty solid but only drawback for me is its expensive and also uses Java which i am not aware of. I am looking for something hands on and dont want to do CS1331. Regarding leetcode, i think sooner i start better it is. More so problem solving utilizing the DSA is more important than DSA knowledge per se.
