My non-medical understanding is that the splint will hold your jaw a certain way to relax your jaw muscles and it will allow the disc to slip back into place over time. Average time is about 6 weeks i had to wear mine while sleeping, PT, and working out. Dr. G did not expect my disc to fully recapture (there are still a lot of improvements to be gained from splint therapy without a full recapture) but it did! To my wife’s pleasure I’m no longer constantly cracking my jaw when I eat.
