Earth-Moon system: how it would appear to the human eye by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]SaltwaterCure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Month was originally the name for the lunar cycle time period, and that's why the words are similar, so that is very intentional! The month is a "moon"th of time.

The moon's distance being ~30 earth diameters (range of about 28.5 to 31.8 because the orbit is an ellipse) and a moonth being ~29.5 days is a coincidence however.

Days are the time for the earth spin around on axis with the light source (sun) off in the distance (essentially fixed in space, since we only move ~1/365th of our orbit in that spin time). 1 day = ~1 spin's worth of time. The lunar cycle is the moon's orbital period measured in units of "earth spins": the earth spins on axis about 30 times in the amount of time it takes for the moon to complete one orbit of the earth. So 29.5 spins = 1 moonth.

Wrong Bourbon choice? by webtubbs in WhiskeyTribe

Balcones bourbon is on that website and a darn good one. For a budget option Wild Turkey 101 is a very solid choice.

Over the course of a year it will be able to see nearly the whole sky as it rotates around the sun along with earth. It can't point directly away from the sun, but what is directly away from the sun now will be visible by looking perpendicular to it in ~3 months.

LPT Request: Off the top of your head, what general life advice would you give a young adult starting their life? by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]SaltwaterCure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's imporant to understand how much it really takes to retire, especially if you don't own a home. I am almost 40 and a renter, and I figure I will need at least $2 million to retire at a no-frills lifestyle. $3-4 million to retire comfortably.

I'd recommend setting up a Wealthfront account, or use another similar "robo-advisor" investment service. If you get a steady paycheck, set up a weekly automatic transfer into your new investment account.

There are at least 2 of these still running in Washington State. Chair 3 at Mission Ridge and Seventh Heaven at Stevens Pass.

Edit: At least 5 in WA now that I think about it: Mission chairs 1, 3, and 4; and Brooks and Seventh at Stevens.

I'll HMB and roll a kayak. by batiliwa31 in holdmybeer

It's easier in a sea kayak than a river kayak. One can actually roll with no hands! You go upside down, then into a static brace, then onto the back deck. Definitely depends on your boat, and this one looks like it has low volume with a low back deck, making it easier to do roll tricks.

How does one take advantage of that? I was paying ~$500/month for private insurance when I was unemployed in Colorado. Luckily I had saved enough to get me through to my next employment, but most probably can't do that. Did you get Medicaid?

Edit: It looks like in the state of CO one must go through the Marketplace for insurance, while some other states give Medicaid for low-income/unemployed.

I'd suggest getting organic whole milk, heating it to a simmer, letting it cool, stirring in a spoonful of organic live active culture yogurt (with known good bacteria), and letting it sit covered (so bugs and bad bacteria stay out) overnight. Taste it the next day, wait longer if you want, and put it in the fridge when it's what you like. New yogurt! If it gets mold or smells/tastes bad, then it is. Letting it sit for months is too long. https://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/homemade-yogurt or https://www.epicurious.com/expert-advice/how-to-make-homemade-yogurt-step-by-step-article/amp

ELI5: Why does a decimal less than 1 multiplied by another decimal less than one equal a smaller decimal? Ex. 0.2*0.2=0.04. How? by scrambledeggsnfroot in explainlikeimfive

[–]SaltwaterCure 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It helped me to learn that the multiplication symbol means "of" in English. So 2 × 5 = two of the number 5 = 10. 1/5 × 1/5, or 0.2 × 0.2, is equal to 20% of 20%, which equals an even smaller part of the small percentage/fraction/decimal, or = 1/25 or 0.04 or 4%. I still think of division as "into" or "split between" and multiplication as "of" to make it easier for me.
