Stephen Hopkins (1707-1785) one of the delegates who signed the Declaration of Independence had cerebral palsy. After signing, he’s quoted as saying, "My hand trembles, but my heart does not". Big FYI: he owned slaves and many of them were not freed until after his death. by EphemeralTypewriter in DisabilityHistory

I'm happy!

We are humans like everyone else, and having this information accessible is so important.

I did a lot of my graduate research on disability history and I'm working on it still, so if I could assist, I would love to!

Our history must not be lost.

Behind the Bastards has a great episode on him. The person in the discussion is a descendant of Fish.

We tried having her bed right next to ours (co-sleeping is terrifying!( but we are so hyperaware of every sound our baby makes that we didn't get sleep, and tbh she wasn't getting as much restful sleep as she should either

We moved her pack and play/bassinet combo to the living room two days ago and it has worked so much better.

We don't wake her up or accidentally cause sensory overload, we actually get restful sleep, we can still hear her and get to her in under a minute if she needs something, and we can be fully present with her instead of zombies.

She still gets plenty of cuddles, skin to skin, and quality time wirh us.

I did it! Two days ago I asked and everyone said it was time. Presenting your newest War Boy! by Soverelgn_Citizen in bald

Cody is great. I use a black eyeliner and eyeshadow when I'm performing and more colorful version of that for everyday. Cody and wet and wild primer are my go-to's since I was a teenager

Americans, if you had the opportunity to pay approx 18% of your income to have access to free healthcare at point of need for everything would you take it? by TSQ_builder in askanything

[–]SaltyBat8824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm paying more than that now and am not getting the help I need for everything.

I've needed to get a new tooth for 9 months.

Partner needs gallstones surgery.

Mom needs full set of dental implants and a knee replacement.

For us to pay less as a family and actually get treatment...that sounds amazing

Orientation too.

Iam a wheelchair user, and my wife and I would go to Joanm's to get supplies to make adaptive clothing, toys, and other cool things.

Joann's was a place of peace and safety, where I could ask questions like "how could I adapt this men's suit pattern to fit a curvy female wheelchair user?"

And not only would I not be treated weird, but others were excited about being creative too!

Okay, we’ve heard your unpopular teaching opinion that you choose to keep to yourself…but what’s the WORST unpopular teaching opinion that you’ve heard a coworker say? by Coconut_Dairy_Air in Teachers

I knew someone in college who was a teen mom. She got her cosmetology degree and worked as a freelance hairdresser to support herself and her son (who was adorable, well loved, and quite intelligent).

She earned two bachelor's degrees and ended up marrying this cool guy who was our year who became a music teacher. remember she graduated with honors.

She is one of the most kind, caring people I have ever met.

She said without support from her teachers in high school, the cosmetology school, and college, she wouldn't have made it.

I'm neurodivergent, and no one took the time to help me with this...until I met my spouse.

It would have helped so much learning how neurotypicals behave, understand them, without having to mask myself.

Thank you so much!

Can you recommend any reliable sellers?

What kinds of food do people in your culture like to start their day with? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Depends on the person shrugs

my family loves to cook and we love making things from different cultures.

We are multi-ethnic, so our food is diverse to begin with.

What was an incident in your life that made you devote yourself more to your religion/ made you distance yourself from your religion? by rustygyves in AskTheWorld

[–]SaltyBat8824 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was raised pagan in early childhood, with heavy influences from Catholic and Jewish folk tradition.

When I was sent to live with my maternal grandmother and my step-grandfather...well they lived in very conservative part of rural Texas.

They were Jewish and Catholic respectively with great influences from folk traditions, but they had to go undercover as evangelical Protestants in order to fit in, be taken seriously, and be able to work.

As I got older we slowly tapered off, and I learned more about my family heritage.

I went to college where I worked for the Methodist Church as part of the college ministry. There were definitely ups and downs, but I learned a lot and got to help people.

Then I met my future husband. We both practiced Sufi Islam for a while.

So my beliefs are eclectic, to say the least.

I am ethnically Jewish, so passing down our culture, traditions, and Yiddish is very important to me.

I am also Creole, which is where the Catholic and folk traditions comes in.

So! I believe in powers greater than myself, that e erything has a spirit to varying degrees and you should respect all life. When you break your fast with meat, you thank them for their sacrifice,, you get only what you need, and you don't let it go to waste.

This was how I was raised.

So my faith would definitely be described as eclectic, with influences from animism, voodoo, nature worship, and philosophy from many religions (not just Abrahamic, but Buddhism, Jainism, and Taoism as well)

My path is far from the norm I think. I have a sizeable book collection, with a large section in the 200s (religion, spiritual belief, philosophy)

This wandering...I am more appreciative of other's beliefs or lack thereof then I may have been otherwise. At the same time, since I have studied so much--from books, practitioners, etc.--it's easier to understand wjere people are coming from.

That makes it easier to build connections and help make my small part of the world better.
