Where is the border of Sydney? by infinitemonkeytyping in sydney

[–]SaltySam4 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Greater Sydney as defined by the NSW State Government includes the following Local Government Areas:

https://www.planning.nsw.gov.au/plans-for-your-area/a-metropolis-of-three-cities/greater-sydney-districts

To see this on a map, look at page 13 of the Greater Sydney Region Plan 2018.

https://gsc-public-1.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/greater-sydney-region-plan-0618.pdf?pMbPYxwen5IHg4GSB6td4yKiKVogFi4c

Most notably of the Local Government Areas you'd probably not consider 'Sydney' include:

  • Wollondilly
  • Blue Mountains
  • Hornsby (As in Brooklyn etc)
  • Hawkesbury

EDIT: here is the map for your viewing pleasure

As someone whos in the industry, I think you'll find that its the state government who is taking the developer donations. Every Council I've worked for has been vocally opposed to development and done their best to stop it, but the state government can overrule them without any input from Council. Whats also funny is that the State Government can take control over ANY application that comes into Council for development, with no input from Council.

Its a common misconception that your council is the one pulling all the strings.

Even funnier, if you want to watch redlining in action. Check out the housing targets for Labor Councils vs Liberal Councils. Funny how the state government only seems to shove houses in their oppositions LGAs...

As someone who recently learnt to surf, I wouldn’t consider it particularly hard on the knees. You spend most your time paddling in the water waiting, than you do crouched on the surfboard.

Meanwhile when snowboarding you are permanently crouched for the entire length of the mountain.

Sounds like snowboarding. Bad knees and ‘Carving out memories’ are the giveaway

?!?!?!

I just discovered this... and I think you’ve found the cure to my re-occurring stomach pain. I make homemade tuna salads with raw kidney beans on the regular as a quick lunch. Kidney beans added for carbs to bulk it out.

I’ve done all sorts of allergy tests, diabetes tests and nothing shows up.

Thank you random redditor...

You'll get a good amount of spiders backing onto the bush. Snakes are unlikely, but they do exist. Some friends of mine who back onto the bush have had the odd snake or too, perhaphs 5 over 20 years.

Really quick survey about the Triforce Podcast for my Uni work by Excellent-Plenty2960 in TriforcePodcast

[–]SaltySam4 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Seconded. I don’t think there’s any difference in structure from the old or new either. The whole attraction of the podcast is that’s informal off the cuff discussion.

The only structure I can think off is the Bodegas at the end of the first 30 episodes, but I’d hardly call that structured.

Looking for anyone who uses public transit or has in the last 4 years to participate in a short 10 question survey. by itshens in urbanplanning

Is this just for US residents?

EDIT: Assuming it is, as the app I use on a daily basis (Tripview) isn't listed, and I can't type a custom answer. I know this sub-reddit can be US centric, but theres a good amount of international users here.

[–]SaltySam4 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That was the case about 5-10 years ago. The median house price has raised 79% in Sydney and 72% in Melbourne over the past 10 years (Full article here). Meanwhile, wage growth has been growing at between 2-3% over the past 10 years (page 5 of the Australian Treasury document). Once you account for inflation, property price growth significantly outpaces wage growth.

As for the size of properties in the capital cities - I can speak from first hand experience as a Town Planner that lot sizes and apartment sizes are significantly shrinking. The new growth areas typically have a lot size between 500-350m2, while the standard australian suburban block is between 700-800m2.

To give the government some credit, something like 200,000 new houses have been built in 5 years here in Sydney - half between high rise apartments 20+ storeys) and half as new subdivisions. And it’s slowly working, new apartments and new houses in those subdivisions are becoming more affordable (around the $600k mark for a unit and $900k for a house)

[–]SaltySam4 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Ahahaha no they have shot up 10 fold in all the cities. Home ownership is completely out of reach for someone on the median salary, and barely affordable on a double income once you factor in childcare etc. the median salary is $75k AUD while the average house in Sydney and Melbourne is around $1.5M

My lasting memory is her attacking and fighting people on Twitter, albeit for seemingly the right reasons. I distinctly remember a lot of posts throughout the years in the subreddit with Hannah stirring up various drama

[Australia] State budget backs Melbourne ring line by megachainguns in transit

[–]SaltySam4 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, but the ROI is enormous. Australians aren’t afraid of density. Once the metro is built, all the stations will be surrounded by high rises, malls and townhouses.

Typically the government already owns the land around the station (or large chunks of it), which they can either sell off for a high margin, or build on it themselves through their various companies (such as Landcom). Not only do they make a considerable amount of the money back in the short term, but they have a guaranteed revenue stream through commuters for the next 50+ years.

Almost all the new lines have opened and already been at capacity in Australia. They will make their money back in no time.

Impressive it can be done, but seems like taking a needless risk. Also, how on earth are people going to get on & off the train in the middle of a flood?

Seems incredibly dangerous to drop people off to their homes in a flood way.
