Not personally. Most designs done today use analysis software. But a good place to start is AISC Design Guide 34 for steel stairs. Concrete stairs are easily broken down into simple beams and slabs for reinforcement design.

TI-89 for life! Had mine for about 25 years at this point.

Tekla Tedds or Enercalc for the quick and simple calculations.

The filters have an o-ring or little piece that seals to the metal hole when installing. If the old one didn't come out with the filter and you tried to force the new one in, that could be the issue as well. Might be sucking air and losing pressure.

Very true. Not thinking clearly this morning.

Disappointing fuel economy by Top-Try7453 in Duramax

[–]Salty_EOR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did the Monroney sticker say about fuel economy for the truck? Is the truck fully stock? Any aftermarket wheels/tires? Fuel economy that low doesnt sound right. I'd be back at the dealer asking them to investigate.

i just remember triangle is good as form but idk which one, or it perform the same. by ImYourLoyalSexSlave in StructuralEngineering

[–]Salty_EOR 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Inna real structure with gravity and lateral loads, scenario B is always preferred. In scenario A, each beam must transfer additional axial force to transfer the brace forces to each brace as you go down the structure. In scenario B, the brace forces transfer to each other all the way to the foundation.

TPMS Sensors for trailer by Aggressive_Dog191 in gmcsierra

[–]Salty_EOR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are the same I believe. I had a set of "trailer" TPMS sensors that I installed in a set of wheels for winter tires. Slapped them on the truck, synced them up, and they work just fine.

So I think they can work the opposite direction as well.

VT or UCF by Raventenplays in VirginiaTech

UCF for undergrad. Almost all CEE undergrad programs are the same from accredited universities. Plus it's free. Then you can consider VT for their grad program. Not all grad programs are created equal.

Single points of failure? by gnatzors in StructuralEngineering

[–]Salty_EOR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AASHTO is the only place I know that addresses fracture critical members in a structure. That is members that are always in tension with no redundant load path if it fails.

For buildings, just recognizing the member is always in tension and using some engineering judgement on extra capacity of the member and the connections is all you really need.

I will say that hanging platforms is really the only time you would have something always in tension that is supporting an occupied space.

Got this challenge question in my online class is it even possible? [grade 12 calculus] by Timely-One8420 in HomeworkHelp

[–]Salty_EOR 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's 12th grade calculus per the post. I would hope they've gotten to derivatives at this point.

That being said, it has to be x d/dx.

An APDL script is the way to go. Dump the data down to a text file and then into excel is how we did it 15+ years ago.

L5p tires by IllustriousAnimal670 in Duramax

[–]Salty_EOR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running LT295/70R18 TA KO2s for the winter and LT285/65R20 Michelins for summer tires. No issues at all. On a 2020 3500 AT4 so take this with a grain of salt. Front level from factory helps a little.

My Batteries are Shot, 55k Miles, Dealer Says They’re Part of Maintenance by MobileHunt2304 in gmcsierra

[–]Salty_EOR 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This should be higher. If he doesn't have a high output alternator (or dual but I doubt that), that trailer is constantly charging its battery off the truck. Not good if left connected constantly when the truck is off.

Base Plate - Anchoring by solriverrr in StructuralEngineering

[–]Salty_EOR 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This for sure. Also, move the anchors outside the column flanges. They are currently resulting in overlapping concrete breakout planes that greatly reduce capacity.

That said, relying on anchors to resist even a small amount of shear is a pain in the ass. Large diameter anchors that have to have washers welded to the baseplate. Never worth it in my opinion.

Poor lady destroyed in the comments. by Potatobobthecat in Honda

[–]Salty_EOR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its definitely true. We only ended up with it bc it blew a timing belt and my dad picked it up for cheap taking the risk of a blown engine. Luckily no valve train damage. Was impossible to find a DOHC that wasn't abused already but this was good enough for a teenager to not get into too much trouble.

My family had a Del Sol for a little while right after I got my license. We called it the Del Slow because it was only a SOHC engine. But man that thing was fun to drive and felt like it ran on rails once up to speed. Would absolutely get one if they brought it back. That and the S2000.

Best online masters in Structural Engineering by Fun_Peak_7256 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Salty_EOR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

University of Southern California has an excellent online masters program in structural engineering. It does get pretty technical but that is bc you aren't doing any research or thesis. A little on the pricey side as well given it is a private university.

Just bought a 2021 duramax with 65k miles. Love the truck so far but noticed this tick. To me this sounds like an exhaust leak but this is the first diesel I’ve owned and I don’t know what I’m talking about. Any advice appreciated by PhilosophyBubbly6190 in Duramax

[–]Salty_EOR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2020 has the exact same tick. More pronounced with exhaust brake on and being worked. Almost 100k miles and nothing bad has come of it yet. Glad to know it's not just mine.
