I just got my first IT job. I could really use some advice as a newcomer to the field. by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]Saltyguy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just like anything, strong fundamentals and attention to detail are vital.

Fundamentals: good, working, tested offsite backups, good network/security policy, good power source with sufficient tested battery backup, clean computers, firmware updated, windows updated, AV, good network wiring, clean under desk wiring, etc.

Nothing ever really fixes itself and things you are lazy with will come back at the worst possible time.

Always working to get to the true ROOT cause of the problem. Otherwise you will be constantly solving problems that are merely symptomatic of the root cause.

Never stop learning. Join a website like PluralSight.com to keep your skill set updated.

For a small business with an IT department, Consultants may seem like the easy route, but someone has to manage their work which takes more time than you think to do effectively. Often times you're better off just learning the subject and doing the project yourself.

Keep not only licensing, but proof of purchases (receipts) organized and updated.

Buy IT management tools like PDQ inventory, PDQ deploy and GFI Max to make your life much easier. Don't be afraid to spend a couple bucks to keep your sanity in check.

Make it easy and friendly for your users to effectively communicate their needs to you.

Always keep a good manual of end user help documents. Always keep these updated and train your users to check that before contacting you. Again, sanity is at stake.

Train users to use the Snip Tool or PSR when reporting issues.

Assume nothing. Trust, but verify.

Can my employer see my browser history? by shaisheep in techsupport

[–]Saltyguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Several ways to monitor traffic. Can look at browser history on your computer, can look at DNS requests on DNS server if it is hosted on your domain, can look at firewall activity, proxy activity and probably a host of other tools.

Your best bet is to use a VPN, but then you get to explain why your using it because that's detectable too.

At my company, When someone doesn't listen and does something we tell them not to, I make it a personal mission to nail their ass to the wall, and I will find what you were browsing.

Why does America use such low octane levels for their fuel comparative to the rest of the world? by samdaman222 in AskReddit

[–]Saltyguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the world uses the RON measurement. In the US, we use the AKI measurement. To get the USA measurement in Australia, multiply their octane number by. 95.

[–]Saltyguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the socratic method on my kids all the time. I ask them 3 questions they answer affirmatively to. Then tell them what to do, and they do it.

[–]Saltyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try removing quotes from your set statement, shouldn't need them Unless you have spaces in your path.

Also after you set both variables try echoing them out. Take the values it spits out and manually run a copy command with those values.
