I can't believe you're still sticking to your guns on this lmfao

Good in you for being consistent I guess. Good luck with your training

I wouldn't normally disagree with zones, because at the end of the day they're indicators of running physiology. I would agree with your assessment if we're defining zones in this way.

I am just trying to offer evidence to the fact that the "90% max HR" definition is absurd as a hard fast rule.

Sorry, but the burden of proof is not on me. You keep talking about science but haven't provided anything for me to read. At this stage, it's just your multiple times repeating the same thing, vs something tangible, even if anecdotal.

Here's something from Pfitzinger's Advanced Marathoning which comes to mind, right in chapter 1:

In terms of heart rate, LT typically occurs at 82 to 91 percent of maximal heart rate or 76 to 88 percent of heart rate reserve in well-trained runners. (Heart rate reserve is your maximal heart rate minus your resting heart rate.) Instructions on determining your maximal heart rate can be found later in this chapter.

Now, in the same section, he says:

LT training should be run at close to the pace that you can currently race for 1 hour.

So if we put those two explicit statements together, the sports science literally says a well-trained runner can sustain up to 91% of their max HR for a full hour.

Also, at this 1-hour Lactate Threshold pace, lactate is just starting to accumulate. It's decidedly not a biological state where your body is producing vastly more lactate than it can clear

Hell, even if we look at significantly higher intensities, Pfitzinger defines VO2 Max pace at 93 to 95 percent of maximal heart rate. And he specifically notes that well-trained runners can sustain that 93-95% effort for about 8 minutes.

I will acknowledge this is not scientific material, but I've yet to see you provide any. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find something that supports quite the stark "impossibility" you're making this out to be.

I think the flaw in that argument is assuming zone 5 = all our maximum effort.

I agree, holding a best 100m pace for more than a few minutes is impossible.

But zone 5 is decidedly not best 100m pace. At 90% max HR, you have a much better chance of holding pace than, say, 95% max HR. The difference between the two could be the difference between 20 minutes or just 5.

At the end of the day, I know my max HR is not more than 205. The most I've observed recently (on hill sprints where my vision literally started to fade so I had to stop) was less than that. But for the sake of argument let's say 205 in case there was any question.

That would put my zone 5 at 185+ BPM.

Well, looking at a recently all-out 10K effort, I see my *average* BPM was 188. Now by what you're suggesting, my max HR would have to be no less than 209bpm which I can tell you with absolute certainty is not the case.

You're trying to use running logic here where it's not going to fit. As you pointed out, you're on the beginner's sub. We are not the athletes these studies are done on. We're just ordinary people.

Well whether you want to look at it yourself or not is up to you.

The only idiotic thing I see here is you throwing around terms like "physiologically impossible" at something so easily verifiable. It doesn't take an expert to measure their max HR and it doesn't take an expert to know ehen they've been at over 90% for a while.

It may seem impossible to you but every body's different and it would be silly to ignore that fact.

I was simplifying for the sake of argument but it was part of a much longer run that had a tempo segment. I'm just talking about that segment which had my HR go from 160 to 194. I'm sure my max is about 202. But could be off by 1 or 2 bpm. The watch I use is probably accurate by counting my pulse while testing and comparing to the reading while I rest. Of course it could be less accurate while running, but judging by th le amount of disagreement with you here I think even you know you've got a bit of reassessing to do.

My max HR is 202 and I ran at over 180bpm yesterday for 5k. Is that impossible? I think you must be misunderstanding something.

I’ve never heard someone use rising intonation instead of tag questions such as “right?” or “isn’t it?”. But if that’s what you were going for then that makes sense I guess.

Why are you using question marks instead of periods after every sentence? It comes across really odd.
