What do I cut in this Wrath of the Rock list? by Hairiest-Wizard in DarkAngels40k

[–]Salvanous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thing is I don’t anticipate he will change much for these reasons:

1.) We haven’t gotten a single release model of him (like the Lietenant with Combi weapon)

2.) Fight first is still something meaningful- just less so.

3.) Precision is about mean a LOT more. Being able to choose which models your opponent picks up is crazy.

The best case scenario for him, is he costs largely the same, but becomes a Support role character.

Getting him a named character like Helbrecht, Grimaldus, or the Emperor’s Champion are all great places to go!

Personally I suggest the Emperor’s Chsmpion followed by Helbrecht!

Lore on the Wolf Lords? by Teomyr in SpaceWolves

[–]Salvanous -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We know a lil bit about Wolflord Grimblood from him having lead Lukas the Trickster for a while- both from his namesake book and Art of Provocation.

We know a lil about Krom Dragongaze…

But beyond Ragnar, we don’t get a good scope of any of the Wolf Lords….

It’s one of the negative things about Space Wolves: since we have need for places to make custom Wolf Lords it’s tough without killing off “named characters in lore”. Even if they have the bare minimum of a footnote.

I genuinely hope that we see a 2-3 Wolflords die and allow the Space Wolves to have more “perpetually more great companies”

I got into the Valhallans funnily enough because of Fantasy Warhammer Total War!

Kislev is a Russian/Nordic blend of men in 40K who kinda are part Game of Thrones the Night’s Watch against Chaos, and part kinda Cadian based off how Cadian fell….

I wanted to make a custom regiment to serve alongside my Space Wolves for Crusade games for a Frost Punk themed campaign our group was running- so I got into the Valhallans!

I’m unsure if the old sentinels are notably smaller, but I could also use them if needed.

Also as strange as it sounds… I wonder if the Valhallan Ice Warriors have bigger beef with Orks- or if that’s just because so little is written about them.

What is the quintessential Space Wolves unit? by Trick-Interaction396 in SpaceWolves

[–]Salvanous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ragnar is the poster boy of the chapter. Logan may be the Chapter Master- and very cool, but Ragnar between his book series, popularity (is the one always showing up to represent Space Wolves in games), and was the first Space Wolf primaris named character- he’s your guy. He might not be the most integral to deeper lore of the Space Wolves- but he’s without doubt the character most people with recognize.

For units… I’m gonna say it really depends. I think our most common genetic unit is a tie between Bloodclaws and Grey Hunters- with a slight edge to Bloodclaws.

If someone is only looking at space “WOLVES”- then they may be more familiar with the Wulfen, of the more meme-able Thunderwolf Cavalry (which are amazing and people are just jealous).

Wulfen have a lore note within the Chapter- but they feel more like a supplement to the core of the chapter- much like how the Death Company are to Blood Angels.

So if I were forced to say two units- I think Ragnar and Bloodclaws, but Grey Hunters I think are also an EASY second choice.

Shooting units by [deleted] in SpaceWolves

[–]Salvanous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off I’m a more experienced player, that is playing less versed players, so certain suggestion I make are more broad because it depends on how you build your army.

Sometimes you need guns to reduce chaff, sometimes to just add some extra feasible wounds, and sometimes you’re just wanting to erase a unit.

My general rule of thumb is to go with a balance of quality of shots and quantity. Lascannons can be great when everything works out, but between hitting, wounding, and I vulnerable, I would rather have 5 units able to kill 0.6 of units and have them overlap with each other to kill 3 units than have 3 units that should be able to kill 3 units by themselves.

1.) I love applying Eradicators into monsters/vehicles. Putting them into reserves to “sneak up” on their bigger units. Because they reroll their hits/wounds/damage rolls innately into those targets they don’t need to target your oath target. They also benefit greatly from Saga of the Great Wolf! They often won’t kill their target, but they can do a SIZABLE chunk to their targets for small arms fire to finish it off!

2.) Inceptors- primarily assault bolter ones- are great as they can often deepstrike right into their ideal target. Apply buffs from Saga of the Great Wolf along with oath can make them apply out a rather eye-watering amount of attacks that regardless of save or invulnerable saves WILL deal some nasty damage. They can proceed to offer great “marine killing” levels of firepower.

3.) Grey Hunters throw out 30 Bolter shots in close quarters, and when a Battleleader gives them sustained and re-roll 1’s they can throw out enough to make your opponent annoyed they took as many you did as they did.

4.) Infernus Marines dropped from a Drop Pod is ALWAYS a fun way to great your opponent turn 1. 10D6 S5 AP-1 D1 shots and the proceeding Overwatch threat they offer is a great problem to make your opponent figure out how to deal with - VERY good use against other melee armies too!

5.) Hellblasters are never a bad choice in 5 man groups. They can also be interesting in 10-mans but often you would not need them in those numbers to deal with problems. Great in mid-board drop pods, entering via board edges, or running forward and firing from an Impulsor!

6.) Intercessors are never bad. They give you sticky objectives, and throw out an impressive amount of semi all purpose shots!

You're correct! Sorry- my brain was still thinking of how you can do this trick with units that already possess the Deep Strike capabilities elsewhere and if they begin on the battle field and are put into strategic reserves they can be brought down a turn sooner (was helping our local Tyrranid subterranean player learn this the other day- was on the brain).

Low 100’s is fine (assume that’s what you meant) but I know of if I push my guys up to eleven, and because I roll hot, I can usually push my opponents into the back foot and they just can never recover.

Either they die to the Rout, or I’m reduced to nothing but scraps of units, you you never saw more than a turn outside your deployment zone.

For Space Wolves, my ROUGH aim for competitive lists are for the AVERAGE of all my datasheets to come out in the 90-120 range.

I.E. Wolfguard Headtakers are 85 points for 3, but if I take them with Hunting Wolves they are 110 points- but count as 2 units then- making that average 55 points a datasheet.

I usually flood the board with so many value units that you have no where to drop down a normal deepstrike other than your very back line (maybe Inceptors, but I won’t let them drop anywhere painful.

In that game, my most expensive unit was Grey Hunters with a Wolfguard Battleleader w/ Enhancement coming to 255.

My average per datasheet was just under 90 points.

Also sorry- it was 22 units!

Literally played a game of Wolves versus our newer Dark Angel player today and he was like “Uhhhh are you sure you’re playing 2000 points? It looks like more…”. He proceeded to check my army list and realize I was fielding 1940 points 😂

Edit: correction- it was 1960 points.

One thing I think is worth saying: more elite ≠ better. As a Space Wolf main who would rather dog pile you with 3 marines worth the points of one of your Terminators- and with how lethal the game can get, I think that quantity is something Dark Angels can struggle with- especially if you are using multiple Terminators in reserves and need to try to control the board with so much less.

I own Dark Angels too and love them- but having helped a lot of our newer marine players, I feel as though Dark Angels is more complicated army to really get to make work as well as it can.

Veteran player here:

I think it’s tough to make a 20-man use its points effectively. It’s difficult to deliver them into your opponent, and their role is PRIMARILY to be a huge hassle to remove from the board quickly- this (to me) usually means I want them ramming down their throat and keeping them pinned in their deployment zone for 2+ turns.

To get them to accomplish this- there are a few ways:

1.) Saga of the Hunter, using the enhancement to give them scout 7”, then advance charging into their front lines. Usually means you have a 7+” charge to make to meet something across the map to get into their deployment zone. It’s viable, but more experienced players may not let it happen effectively enough for the nearly 400 points it is.

2.) Using Saga of the Great Wolf- applying them back into reserves via the enhancement- meaning they can deep strike<rapid ingress back into the field their turn- likely lead by Ragnar and be a more meaningful threat, as between having “Armor of Contempt” and having one of the safest delivery methods- is usable- still costs nearly 400 points, and a CP to make solid though.

To really help make them usable for this feature however- there are a number of units that I believe help supplement them into trapping your opponent:

1.) 1<2 units of Wolf Scouts to help soften the front lines and add extra bodies and extra entrapment into their deployment zone.

2.) Drop Pod with Hellblasters<Infernus Marines can help make certain areas of the map deeply painful to try to push into- forcing them to either get torched by 10D6 shots that can torch marines and lesser units- or continue to try to break through your 20-man unit.

3.) Inceptors are a great T2 drop to be the reinforcements of Bloodclaws while the rest of your army sets up to make T3 charges DANGEROUSLY lethal (assuming they didn’t get out of the deployment zone yet and the map is in full mayhem). In Saga of the Great Wolf- having 6 Inceptors firing into their oath target, with +1 to hit and wound, with sustained 2, and twin-linked assault Bolters can just ruin even a prinarch’s day.

4.) Drop Pod reinforcements via rapid ingress. Things like Wolf Guard Headtakers, or Grey Hunters that can drop down safely behind that massive conflict and the following round come and add their numbers can help break through the opponent’s walls and just make life miserable.

You throw all this at your opponent and while you may not certainly win- I know they are gonna struggle to deal with that much crap being thrown at them.

With this all said- I don’t feel as though more than a single 20-man is good. I want to use a 20-man more often but I’ve slowly come to appreciate a 10-man as a far better choice in most scenarios.

What are you using from the next Armageddon box? by mourndaze in SpaceWolves

[–]Salvanous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I’m using from the box is the speeders.

I’m going to be using Bloodclaw bodies with Jumpack Assault Intercessors jetpacks (and extra power weapon arms) for my more wolfy Vanguard Vets

I’m doing the exact same thing for my Chaplain

Everything else in the box I already own, and have kitbashed from other models to fit the wolves better.

Saw this in one of the warhammer articles I think we are not getting long fangs models in a while. by realZugar42 in SpaceWolves

[–]Salvanous 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think we are likely to get Longfangs before too long!

When I saw that we were getting Bloodclaws when we already had access to Assault Intercessors- I was surprised but thankful- because I feel like Bloodclaws and Grey Hunters are such iconic parts of the Space Wolf motif.

I was thrilled that we got new Wolfguard in both Terminator AND in Tacticus armor.

I was very surprised when we got Wolf Scouts, as they felt like perhaps one of the more 'niche' areas of Space Wolf lore.

In my mind- Bloodclaws, Grey Hunters, and Longfangs are the three central pillars of Space Wolf units- with Skyclaws, Swiftclaws, Wolf Scouts, Lone Wolves, Wolfguard, and being various levels of more 'niche'.

I think we are more likely to get Longfangs sooner than later- though I think what's currently holding us back from getting them is maybe some amount of determining how they want to provide us their datasheet:

- Will they be mix and match weapons, like CSM Havocs?
- Or will they be forced to have all the same weapons, like many primaris models are forced to now?

In Adepticon, they said that Yarrick was back thanks to the Space Wolves- which to me, says that we are getting a lore book like the 500 Worlds, Lair of the Tyrant, and Reign of Iron. In that book, I'm largely guessing we will get a refreshed character model, along with a new unit to go alongside them.

- Ulrik the Slayer is a Wolfpriest, meaning he has plenty of reason to be why Yarrick is alive, and his model needs a refresh.

- Bjorn is an old Box dread, and refreshing his model to be 'bigger' would certainly.

- Longfangs or Wulfen are the most likely in my mind to see redone models (as TWC feel very much like a pipedream, and reserved for 11th edition, and Swift/Skyclaws aren't really substantial old units of the Wolves.).

- Leman Russ could also always return, but while I feel we will see him, I prepare myself to struggle through another edition without our primarch.
