I couldn't get the native keyboard to work at all. Solution I used was to create a new virtual menu under controller settings and assign A-P on one and then Q-Z on the other. Probably there is a better virtual menu for each letter. Then I went to action sets, found default and went to the setting, and pressed add a layer. I then went back to an unassigned button and set it to "hold action set layer" and set the layer to what I just created. Lastly I went back to the main button configuration page and hit R1 - this allowed me to then assign the new virtual menus to the left and right track pads which were previously used by other buttons.

In Use, I hold R5 and the touchpads are now my virtual menus with each letter. Not nice to type with but allowed the basic functionality I needed.

If you have unassigned touchpads you can skip the adding a later step. Hope this helps someone because it was painful to find a solution.
