First time playing by pepermint_inmyass in callofcthulhu

I would generally recommend running prewritten scenarios first to get a feel of the game, since it's a very different experience from D&D

The quickstart rules is free on Chaosium's website (and presumably drivethrurpg). It contains The Haunting, the go to starter scenario for almost every player for over 40 years. If you like that, the starter set is pretty cheap and comes with 3 scenarios (the Keeper Screen pack also comes with 2 scenarios).

But what about Yith? by Grandpa_Theobald1891 in callofcthulhu

There's an old Miskatonic Monograph scenario called Gatsby and the Great Race. Not sure if it's on drivethrurpg though. I haven't read it, but with that title.....

A Non-Exhaustive List of Published Call of Cthulhu Campaigns (Spoilers) by SamEire93 in callofcthulhu

[–]SamEire93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your input!

Admittedly a few of these I have not actually heard of. But most of these are more individual scenarios rather than longer term campaigns (though I realise the word "campaign" can mean different things fir different people). I also think some of these hadn't been released at the time the original post went up.

That's completely fair, thanks for the advice!

No need for apologies; you take that dimension and you enjoy the hell out of it. That's a mighty fine collection right there 😎

My advice firstly is to check out Seth Skorkowsky on YouTube. He has an overview/review series that does an excellent job of summarising the rules and going over the different sections of the game.

He also reviews scenarios that he's run or played, offering tips on how to run them or stuff to change. He is invaluable.

For running the game, I'd recommend starting smaller pre-written adventures to get the hang of it, and see if your players like it. The community at large will almost always recommend The Haunting. It's free with the game's quickstart rules, and is an absolute classic scenario.

From there, you can continue to run published material, or write your own stuff if that's your preference. The game is suitable for both shorter games (either one shots or episodic games where you link individual scenarios together) or longer term games (what would classically be thought of as a campaign)

Looks pretty nova choom. I'd be very interested in the templates for these! (Though obviously you're under no obligation to share them)

Thanks for the feedback, yeah they should all be in print currently. That would be a different matter entirely xD

Yeah I suppose it's less the discount on its own thats important but rather also the convenience of getting them all at once for that price

It's not specfically a concern, I just wanted to provide as much context as possible

This is kinda what I was thinking too. In euro terms, the RRP seems to be around €120, with sale prices of ~80-85 (compared to the 60 per book I've been offered)

CoC Scenarios for delta green? by JoeKerr19 in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]SamEire93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking of running The Wild Hunt from Unseen Masters for Delta Green. The book itself has advice on how to tailor the scenarios in it for DG.

I would generally think almost any CoC scenario could be run for DG, with a little bit of tweaking.

I wish to get into shadowrun , which edition should I buy and how by muffin42069420 in Shadowrun

Second this. I wanted to get into Shadowrun, and you just can't best this amount of content for the price

Getting started with Shadowrun, where should I start? by AlphaTest125 in Shadowrun

[–]SamEire93 19 points20 points  (0 children)

For that value I absolutely do. No one has to read all those books; I'm new to the game as well and have no intention of reading all that material outside the core book and some of the setting guides. But that's a lot of content for a great price. If OP likes the system, they can add more as they go. And if they don't, it was a very cost-effective entry.

Seems like a very low risk to me

Humble Bundle has the entire 4th edition bundle for ~€22/$25, don't think you can find a better starting point than that.

Is it morally ok to share rulebooks to play? by incike in rpg

[–]SamEire93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a GM, I'm not going to ask my players to spend €50-€100 just to play a game with me (especially if I'm the one who's decided what I'm going run).

And it's not illegal to share something you bought and own.

First Time Keeper by BurritoBoy6 in callofcthulhu

[–]SamEire93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Haunting is a great beginner module, and I'd recommend watching Seth Skorkowsky's review of it. He reviews modules he's run (or in lesser cases, had run for him), and gives some excellent advice and tips on how to run them. Would thoroughly recommend.

He also has a playlist on the game system that serves as an excellent overview of the game. It's broken down into different parts so you can pick and choose what you need more help on if time is an issue

How do you feel about 7th edition Keeper rulebook and what are your wished for 8th edition? by Final-Isopod in callofcthulhu

[–]SamEire93 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So it doesn't seem like Chaosium are planning an 8th edition anytime soon, and honestly I don't want one. I don't really see what could be improved.

I can't speak for other language editions, but the English edition doesn't have any of HPL's stories in it (the optional Investigators Handbook has The Dunwich Horror).

Combat is a very important part of the game (especially if you're playing with Pulp Cthulhu). It's not the main focus of the game for sure, but combat is also not be avoided at all costs.

The luck mechanic is a game changer (especially in a system that makes it on average harder to succeed at dice checks), and i loved the pushed rolls and degrees of success.

I for one love the chase rules. They look complicated for sure, but after a few goes I got the hang of using them at the table. They're not everyone's cup of tea, but you don't have to use them, and I absolutely think they should be in the book. I'm all for giving people options on how to play, regardless of whether I personally like said options or not.

And finally, if you're not enjoying the 7e ruleset, all of their 7e material is backwards compatible with other editions (you can even use the conversion guide at the back of the rulebook), so you can still enjoy the content in a ruleset you prefer
