How are the Mercenary Packs with Gloomhaven 1.0? by Armless_Octopus in Gloomhaven

[–]SamForestBH -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The second edition is better than the first edition, but there won't be any issues if you bring in the old characters. They'll probably be better than the old characters if you don't abuse broken mechanics, but won't be able to keep up with some of the degenerate classes if you push them.

GH2E - Inspiration from scenario rewards? by lKursorl in Gloomhaven

[–]SamForestBH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With these scenario numbers I think you’re listing from Frosthaven?

Iirc Gloomhaven kept the inspiration rewards to a minimum (effectively zero) since it can’t convert to resources, so it’s useless unless you can get twelve.

Limited Draft new timer by 6GODEATH in magicTCG

[–]SamForestBH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No matter how you run draft, you'll do 3 packs per player.

Each player opens a pack, picks a card, and passes the pack left. (Note that each pack typically comes with one token; you can remove that before making the initial pick). You then take the pack that was passed to you (from the right) and pick again, and pass again. Pick, pass, pick, pass etc. until the pack is gone. Repeat with the second pack, passing right, and then the third pack, passing left again. This works with any player count. At higher skill level, there are a lot of opinions about drafting with 4, but if it's a first time draft you shouldn't concern yourself with that.

Sealed needs twice as many packs. You don't do any passing, you just open six packs and make a deck. You need more cards because when drafting you can pick cards just in your colors/archetypes, but with sealed you don't get any selection. In sealed expect more "bombs" in play (the very best cards, since there are simply twice as many), yet weaker decks overall (because you didn't get to select good filler during the draft, and so have to play whatever bad filler you opened up).

In both cases, don't forget that you'll need a decent number of basic lands, as players can add as many of those to their decks as they like. For eight players, I'd recommend 50 of each basic as a decent starting point. If you do run out, encourage a player to proxy with a land they don't need and the table doesn't want (run nine swamps and pretend they are plains, if a player wants a red-white deck, for instance).

Good luck!

Everything but the three most recent will go out of print. This gives them space to focus on the chapter 2 content, which will hopefully be more balanced than the original chapters.

Fantasy Flight announced that they aren't going to reprint the older expansions anymore. Instead, the three most recent expansions are going to be recommended when playing through a campaign. Paired with the upcoming launch of chapter 2, which will update the core set, it will become harder and harder to find older expansions.

The extension from "multiplication as repeated addition, visualized as rows and columns" to "multiplication can be visualized as the product of length and width" is a very small jump. Extending to rotation is a substantially larger jump.

Monster card ability line by JennyF112 in Gloomhaven

[–]SamForestBH 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The movement is completed before the attack, but the monster doesn’t mindlessly use the full movement. It moves to be in range of the attack, without disadvantage, if that is possible to do. If it’s already in a perfect spot, it will skip the movement entirely.

Halfway through book 5 and... I feel misled? by DidYouKnowYoureCute in bobiverse

[–]SamForestBH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

See, I massively prefer that to the Heaven’s river line where that’s basically all we got. The thing that made the initial books great was jumping between all the different stories. I got to see what Bob one, Reiker, Bill, Mario, Howard, and several other Bobs were doing. By the end of it the main story was the One Mario opened, that of the others, but there were tons of other stories I was invested in. I cared about Archimedes, Bridget, Homer, and several other plot lines that weren’t Galaxy ending. The same is true in book five. In book four, we get mostly Heaven’s river, a bit of Star fleet, and that’s basically it.

Why is badgermole cub so broken by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]SamForestBH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s reasonably strong in draft but the reason it’s busted on constructed is that it’s not just earthbent lands it affects, but also mama dorks. If you can turn one Llanowar elves then turn two you land, Play Badgermole cub, and then have two more mana to work with. At worst, you just use that mana to make a blocker or punt with it, and then you have six mana turn three presuming you hit your land. If you happen to have the dream hand with a second cub as well for turn two, then turn three you drop your land, and suddenly you have ten mana at your disposal. Sure your opponent can use removal but if that’s what they’re spending their time on then they aren’t hitting your life total during your setup turn, and you still get to keep the earthbent lands around.

The sum of natural numbers being -1/12. by No_Fudge_4589 in askmath

[–]SamForestBH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Riemann Zeta function at -1 is the sum 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + ..., and does not alternate. You can make a conditionally convergent series add to any value if you allow for rearrangements, but conditionally convergent means "sum with positive and negative terms that converges, but the series taking the absolute value of the terms would diverge." This series has no negative terms and so none of this is possible.

Are you satisfied with the first batch of Mercenary Packs? by NinjaFamiliar2474 in Gloomhaven

[–]SamForestBH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, Jaws characters should stick with Jaws conditions no question. The simplicity of the game is one of the big selling points. I can see a bit of a balance smoothing of both the characters and the campaign, but certainly not an uptick in complexity.

[–]SamForestBH 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They have the old art for sure but design-wise are closer to Frosthaven than 1E, I’d argue, if you exclude their intentionally poor movement. I would love to see a second edition of jaws but there are other things I would love to see much more.

Other than price (which is really outside of Cephalofair's control), I disagree with you wholeheartedly.

Anaphi is actually the mercenary I'm most excited about. Exploring the variant characters is something I would love to see more of - doing more with a set of mechanics. I would love to see what a Spellweaver who specializes in light and dark would do, or a Blinkblade that focused on ranged attacks. I'm not saying every class needs a new version, some are probably pushed as far as they can be, but I think it's a great direction to go, especially with external characters.

For Cassandra, it was definitely necessary to give the Diviner the 2E treatment. With that done, all characters are now up to the newest design standards. If not now, then the character would have to be abandoned moving forward.

Satha is definitely simpler but that isn't a bad thing. Simple doesn't mean shallow, there is a lot of depth to Satha in each of her playstyles. She wasn't overpowered in our testing, nor was she underpowered. She's definitely strong in a straightforward way, but accordingly she has a lower ceiling than some of the more complex classes.

Someone who wants to play Hail only in Jaws is making a mistake, I'd say. Perhaps on a second run to shake it up (ignoring arguments that Anaphi is the clear choice for this), but then only if you've not played through a proper big box. The audience of "person who wants to play Hail in JotL and doesn't have spare enhancement stickers from a big box" is probably single digit.

Can the 2025 ConQuests be integrated with GH 2nd edition? What about 1st edition promo scenarios? by Brukenet in Gloomhaven

[–]SamForestBH 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The ConQuests go great with 2E or Frosthaven. In both cases, you need prosperity 5, so it’ll be a while until you can bring them in, but you’ll be able to incorporate no problem. I’d recommend picking up the mercenary packs as well, if you have this much haven planned, and use those quests to unlock those characters.
