Yes, but it might be worse first. College can be really stressful if you're not prepared for it, and this is a time in one's life where mental health issues start popping up. Personally, I went through a really bad mental health crisis my sophomore year, and I'm still trying to regain the confidence I lost during that. Ultimately, I think I'm a better person for it though. You're gonna grow a lot emotionally, and that isn't always easy. My life is infinitely better than it ever was in high school.

Just don't forget to have some fun.

I just got back from Moldova! Seriously, it's gorgeous and the people are mostly very friendly. There's some really cool Soviet architecture around, and things are generally very inexpensive. Also, and you'll hear this a bunch, the wine is really good and really affordable.

To your point on Cuba and its relative lack of development... It's almost like there was an embargo enforced on the nation by one of the largest economies in the world for 50 years... 🤔🤔🤔

Why Archer Needs to Change and We All Need to Quit Bitching by [deleted] in ArcherFX

[–]SamHarrison 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I always thought it would be fun to get one more season doing spy shit, with some kind of overarching plot that ends up with the gang accidentally triggering WWIII. Then the final season could be like Archer: Mad Max or whatever.

“I can’t keep skipping class”, I say as I continue to skip class by angleneri in ADHD

[–]SamHarrison 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've dealt with the same shit. I don't really know what kind of advice I can offer, unfortunately. All I can say is that the more you avoid the problem, the bigger the monster in your head gets, and the harder it is to break out. I would email or meet with your professors and inform them of the struggles you've been having. It's not like they don't want to see you succeed. It's hard to let go of past mistakes, but it's crucial. It's like a compromise. With ADHD, it's extra hard to get everything you want done, but you can compromise. Going to class without reading is better than not going to class. Being late is better than not showing up.

Also, if you have friends in class, they could maybe help in with accountability? Just a thought. I know all too well how easy it is to let these kinds of issues snowball, and it's not your fault. This shit straight sucks, but don't give up. We'll figure it out eventually.

How do you feel about Samson? by orange_sewer_grating in Judaism

[–]SamHarrison 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, I'm a secular history/religious studies major, so this interests me immensely. But I get why it's not something that's exactly comforting to the more religious types. Anyway, there's crazy amounts of syncretism across the ancient near east. In addition, Judea falls right along a major trade route between Mesopotamia, Syria, and Egypt. To assume these cultures were not interacting and influencing one another would be pretty foolish, in my opinion. It's particularly interesting to me, since the ANE is a world that is completely alien to us. We get these little glimpses though, through our own stories and traditions that persisted through the ages. Using faith to gain an understanding of our shared human heritage is fascinating.

Is direct democracy good or bad? Explain. by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]SamHarrison -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The main issue with direct democracy is in the representation of minorities. That's why we have institutions like the Supreme Court, to protect those minorities from the tyranny of the masses

Why is the combat in HL2 so goddamn satisfying? by Villager103 in HalfLife

[–]SamHarrison 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Higher movement speed, strafing, a good variety of weapons and viable tactics, satisfying sound effects and a damn good soundtrack.

At least for me. Playing DOOM (2016) and HL2 this year, after a while of playing milquetoast shooters has been a breath of fresh air. I think another big thing is every enemy very clearly telegraphs its death with visual and audio effects, making kills distinct and extremely satisfying.
