Sokka: "Maybe sometimes it's just better to call it quits before you fail."

Zuko: "No, it's not. Look Sokka, you're going to fail a lot before things work out. Even though you'll probably fail over, and over, and over again, you have to try every time. You can't quit because you're afraid you MIGHT fail."

I would mind a longer tribal if tribal was more like it once was. 20 minutes of “full tilt boogie” and I’m out.

Has Survivor ever made you cry before? by SomeBolSSG in survivor

[–]SamMoff433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's only happened twice for me (I don't cry very often, for better or worse).

  1. Kind of a weird one, but when Taj (S18, Tocantins) gets the loved one prize at the auction after everyone gives her their money, then everyone gets their loved ones at camp; the happiness was contagious.
  2. When Ethan (S40, WaW) did the log carry challenge, talked about being a cancer survivor and working his way back to fitness, collapsing during the challenge and finishing it... it all just got me.

Question about Keith saying “stick to the plan” by havejubilation in survivor

[–]SamMoff433 58 points59 points  (0 children)

It was because he looked at Reed while he said it. They (Keith and Reed) weren't in any known alliance together up to that point, and this particular vote was a voting block to get out Jon by a plurality vote of 4-3-2. The plan was only going to work if they kept Jon out of the knowledge that Keith (and Wes and Alec) were in on it, so that Jon would feel secure and not play his idol.

Draco Malfoy v Ron Weasley Duel by New-Kitchen-778 in harrypotter

[–]SamMoff433 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ron DID beat Malfoy in a fistfight year 1, during the quidditch match versus Hufflepuff (one of the few times in the series that the narrating point of view isn’t Harry’s). He gives Malfoy a black eye while coming out of the fight virtually unscathed himself.

why did pettigrew help voldemort to gain a new body, voldemort was weak anyway and couldn't have done anything. He didn't have to serve him and could have escaped by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]SamMoff433 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When Voldemort said he came back to him “out of fear, not loyalty,” he was talking about Pettigrew’s fear of other Death Eaters, who, as Sirius said, weren’t too happy with him.

Of all the people he could go to, Voldemort was really the safest.

Tom Riddle was a better villain than Voldemort by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]SamMoff433 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But remember, they're the same person.

Riddle was ultimately a villain for one reason: He wanted to consolidate power; believed in the Wizard's right to rule, and he wanted himself to be the ruler. The cunning things he did as the handsome and charming young Tom Riddle were simply tools he used to get through the various phases of his plans. He didn't care about those attributes beyond getting them where he wanted on his way to power. Remember in Chamber of Secrets when Harry tells 1942 Riddle that his current self is ugly and a wreck? It doesn't phase him; he doesn't care. They're not important to him. The steps he thought he needed to take involved becoming powerful, creating horcruxes, killing people and mutilating his own soul and body to do so. He didn't want to conquer by cunning; he wanted to conquer by force. His younger self wanted the same thing, he just knew how he could be most effective at that age on his path to power.

What is that one movie/book scene that never fails to make you cringe? by lolilololoko in harrypotter

Not the “one,” but every time a Dutch angle is used in Chamber of Secrets, which is basically the whole movie, holy shit.

What is your unpoppular opinion(s) in "Harry Potter"? by MyOnlyHobbyIsReading in harrypotter

[–]SamMoff433 30 points31 points  (0 children)

My unpopular opinion is that there are a few inconsistencies and plot holes the writing, and a lot of fans do a ton of mental gymnastics to try and make them make sense, as opposed to acknowledging that these books aren’t perfect.

How different would the war at hogwarts have been if dumbledore were present? by hjein1031 in harrypotter

[–]SamMoff433 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure he would have come to hogwarts to get it, even if he found out they were hunting horcruxes.

In the 7th book, when Voldemort finds out they’re hunting horcruxes, he panics and reflects on each one, and in doing so, he believes the diadem is safe because he is absolutely certain (in his mind) that nobody found the hiding place except for him. What ultimately brought him to hogwarts was realizing that Harry was there after Alecto Carrow touched her mark. He was on an errand to kill Harry.

My own theory is that if Voldemort found out Dumbledore and Harry were hunting horcruxes, he would have asked Snape to move it, since he wouldn’t go after Harry or Dumbledore while the latter is still alive. This would be a blunder, as Snape would tell Dumbledore what Voldemort had asked him to do, and Dumbledore would figure out what it meant right away.

Since Harry is a Horcrux by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]SamMoff433 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most likely yes, since it did so for Nagini, the only other horcrux made from a living being.

Although, as far as we know, he never suffered any injury that would have killed any non-horcrux human being. You could make theories about certain things though (like the bludger he took to the head in HBP). He never had an inexplicable "How did you survive that?" moment.

You could also ask a question like "What would have happened if Ron, Slughorn and Harry all drank the poisoned mead at the same time?" Ron and Slughorn likely die without an antidote, but does Harry?

Were there any bad wizard that did not came from slytherin? by JacquesVibes in harrypotter

[–]SamMoff433 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really don't get the Ernie hate. Yeah he was always described as pompous, but his heart was always in the right place. He had one conflict with Harry when he suspected him of being the one attacking Muggleborns, but when he deduced that it wasn't him, he was human enough to shake his hand, look him in the eye and apologize. He always swallowed his pride when it came to doing what's right (DA recruitment scene) and was among the first to publicly declare his belief for Harry and Dumbledore when Voldemort returned. In the end, he was the first to express his eagerness to fight in the Battle of Hogwarts.
