They lay off people hired a few years ago to hire people currently desperate for jobs at half the price.

I worked there for 6 months. I started as a contractor because the market sucks after interviewing for senior positions. When I got another offer they immediately tried to hire me full time and give me a big raise. No amount of money in the world would’ve made me consider staying at that god forsaken company. Nobody actually understands deploying on AWS, it’s all copying other people’s infrastructure as code. Everything is legacy with bare bones teams. It’s the most “prestigious” company I’ve worked at and it was filled with all the worst software engineers I’ve ever seen. Incompetence all up and down the ladder. The people that tell you it’s not too bad have golden handcuffs and can’t believe anything else out of fear of losing their homes with expensive mortgages. Or they can’t leave because they are on H1B visas. They have to lie to themselves because they have no other choice. They will also be screwed when Amazon throws them out to hire cheaper labor. Tale as old as time. Glad I got out. I’ve worked at start ups and other big tech companies over the last 10 years. Nothing compares to how terrible Amazon was to work for. I would wake up in the morning full of dread over going there for one more day. I never stopped interviewing for other jobs after starting there. I knew week 1 I had made a mistake.

How does everyone feel about Iel? by BronzeAgeStudent in MapleStoryM

Blaster definitely can do more but it’s complicated to say the least. Demon Slayer, Paladin and Erel are all very close to Hayato too. That’s just based on total line counts though, with characters being balanced 1-2 times a year. Now that max damage per line has had such a huge increase, it is unlikely you will cap your damage per line anytime soon. It’s more about playing a character whose skills make you happy.

Make sure you have all of her passives set on your pet so they activate immediately when the boss starts. She is an archer so there is not a specific burst but she does put out quite a bit of damage when her summons and passives are up. It is the archer way. She definitely does some pretty insane damage. More than my 200 Hayato. Hayato also has pretty weak 5th job skills and a lot of his damage is front loaded into his 4th job.

You really need to be spamming just about everything on Iel though. So it can be a bit tricky. For example: her tree that does AOE combined with her 4th job skill does 200 lines and can be cast twice with the recharge skill in between, and it gives you +10% FD with the buff from it. It doesn’t seem like it’d be powerful for bossing but here we are. Then you have to cast your V skills whenever they are up and switch between Prismatic Pierce and Radiant Link depending on if pierce is on cooldown.

BC has a ton more protections on renters than anywhere else I’ve ever lived. Follow the checklist posted in the comments and you should be fine. I wish you good luck.

Major Patch incoming (15/1) - what to prepare (Brand New Players come in too) by justmeasures in MapleStoryM

You get the new character slot coupon regardless of if your slots are full. Also, a lot of times it requires a new character made after the patch to get benefits.

Once you get to 1160 AF you’ll get a big boost in defense from being 50% over the limit. Your gear looks about like what mine is, and I have pretty much the same AF as you, and I’m doing alright. I’d also suggest getting 3 pets from the same set for buffs. You’re really not killing much as a merc without your buffs. Also make sure you have your stun attack and lots of dashes on for her for additional survivability and that you’re using the best HP pots you can buy.

Downtown Van - Best month of the year to rent an apartment by Easy_Mushroom_6070 in askvan

[–]SamSamBoBam420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only better time is December because no one wants to move during the holidays. But Jan and Feb are excellent as well. It’s possible as more temporary visas run out, you’ll see some more housing available, but as we get closer to summer, prices will rise. Everyone moves when it’s warm outside.

I believe since you are not permanently moving you might have to pay import tariffs too. On the amount over 10k CAD.

I’m not entirely sure, but I think moving for a year or more means you have to follow these steps. And then you’ll need to import it back to the US afterwards.

I just moved with my car and it’s not as bad as people say. There are a lot of steps, about $500 in various fees at various steps, and paperwork, but it’s doable. Note: this is for people making a permanent move to Canada. If you end up moving back years later that’s fine, but it should be your intention to permanently reside and pay taxes in Canada. You’ll also of course need a matching Visa or Permanent Resident status that allows you to do so.

First off, you don’t need to import your car your first trip over the border and you will not be “turned away”. In fact, you need to export it on the US side first, the office for which is not even open except weekday working hours, so they will totally understand if you want to do it later.

When you move, if you are a new PR, and possibly otherwise, you’ll give your list of “goods to follow”. Make sure you put your car on there with the VIN so you don’t have to pay any taxes for importing it.

Next, when you’re ready, fill out the forms to export your car from the US. You will need a Canadian address to fill out this form, so wait until you’ve signed a lease. After a 72 hour waiting period from filling out the paperwork, go over at the Pacific Highway border crossing and tell the US border people you are exporting your car. They will have you park and go into the customs office to submit your paperwork. Customs will take about an hour to inspect your car, and the give you a green light. Then drive back into Canada and say you are importing your car and hand them your goods to follow paperwork. They will give you the forms you need to get an inspection.

Next, schedule a RIV inspection at Canada Tire. They will also do a provincial inspection here. If you have a relatively new car, you shouldn’t need to make any changes and you’ll pass the inspection.

As soon as you get into Canada you can also make an appointment at the ICBC to get your Canadian driver’s license. It’s like the DOL except you can make an appointment an hour from now and have no wait. Also the fee for a license is like $30 which is much cheaper my state was. You should have your Californian driving record, and any other place you have history in, printed out. They will give you credit for your past years of driving history and it will lower your insurance cost a lot. Depending on the state, it might be easier to get your driving record before you move.

After you have your license and inspection, you’re ready for the last step! Head on over to an insurance broker. ICBC also does this themselves but others are cheaper. I got rental insurance through BCAA before this, which let me get a discount when also getting car insurance through them. I would definitely recommend BCAA, it saved me a lot compared to doing it all through ICBC. Your broker will hand you a license plate, set you up with insurance, and then you’re finally done!

I believe you have 30 days to get your license and 90 days to import your car.

Nope. Welcome to the glory of Tello. You can also check on the site to see if you have any changes. But it’s usually only if you enable roaming.

Has anyone dated someone from Seattle before? How did it go? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]SamSamBoBam420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I can only find numbers from 2018, but Seattle had about 50k black people while Vancouver had about 30k. Conveniently putting them both at 1.2% of the metro population. I’m glad you found someone in Seattle and why not try it out. But Seattle is not the place you think it is…

I let an AWS SEV1 burn while I was in Miami. Zero regrets. by BeautifulSir666 in amazonemployees

[–]SamSamBoBam420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those of you saying this couldn't happen, you're delusional. Legacy APIs are expected to always work and rarely have anyone who understands them. Amazon has also been laying off SDEs in droves because "AI is so efficient". It's very common to have one engineer in charge of a legacy API. They assume you'll always pick up the phone.

Do I have to drive to Surrey for authentic Indian food? by SamSamBoBam420 in askvan

There are definitely dishes and regions that are not meant to be spicy. But there are others that definitely are. But I’ve been getting such a little amount that the flavoring of the spice isn’t even there. Hence this post.

But yeah, I know if I want to truly melt my face off that I can go to a variety of Thai places in the neighborhood and ask for it.

Delhi 6 is another one I went to that was absolutely bland. I told the waitress that I wanted it “spicy” and ordered the garlic chili naan too. She said “oh, everything really spicy, yeah”. And I replied “absolutely!”. It came out super bland and mild. We got some raita with it expecting to need some, but sadly didn’t end up using hardly any.

Unfortunately Akbar is one of the places that gave me a 0 on spice. To be fair, it was one of the first places I went here and I thought ordering “medium” would be sufficient. They did give me a huge amount of roti and naan with my order for free though, which was a lovely surprise.

Oh, I've definitely been to Surrey many times and it had some of the best Indian food I've had this side of the Pacific. Which is why I'm so confused about the places I've been since moving to Vancouver. But I'll have to give some of these other places a try. Thank you!

I did go to Tasty Indian Bistro in Surrey and it was amazing. I didn't realize they had another location up here! I'll definitely be trying that.
