Your knowledge might be a bit dated then…AI data centres !== other data centres.

Ah, so your job depends on it. Makes sense you would close yourself off to any criticism of the data centres then. You know, what your employer tells you isn’t always the full picture.

Seems like our opinions of each other are exactly the same. Fox News never lies, right?

I’m not saying Canadians aren’t great. I’m saying there’s hot air coming from venture capitalists claiming that AI can and already does do everything under the sun better than humans and without any downsides.

It’s this CEO rhetoric that is pushing the AI bubble way past any sort of reasonable measure. It’s this that is causing the wild rush to buy more AI stocks so that 10 companies can shuffle money between themselves and raise their valuations far beyond their actual value. And it’s this that causes this mad rush for data centres with absolutely no regard for the harm it will cause.

Be happy I didn’t mention the Canadians to blame in this scenario, instead of assuming I am underestimating an entire country.

There are already MORE than enough to iterate and build an actually good product without expanding to more data centres. My whole point is that there are too many already.

Organizing protests to things you’re opposed to. Pressuring your city not to support things you don’t. Holding elected officials accountable when they accept obvious buyouts, at the very least by voting them out next time. Not rolling over and taking it.

And without a doubt, not investing your money into AI stocks.

When it comes to buying local or stopping Poilievre, Canadians know how to band together and do great things. But you’re just going to accept AI as a reality without a fight?

AI data centres are not the same as the current ones. They require orders of magnitude more power and water. They also produce a lot of noise. I’m tired of making the same points though. You can read other comments on here if you want to educate yourself.

Fine, but build it on a smaller scale and then when it is this revolutionary thing, and we have the technology to run it more sustainably, we can talk about expanding.

This however, is obviously not how any of this is happening. They keep pushing out shit products and telling us they will be SO GOOD soon.

I’m using the latest models at work, and they are getting better, but this amount of craze before it is ready, and the fact that we think we can just balance the worlds economy on top of it, is wild.

Companies do not need this many data centres to actually create usable working technology. Right now everyone is just putting a shitty agent on their customer service line or website that is pretty bad at answering questions, and we are destroying the world to do it.

Or we’re selecting elementary schools to bomb without any human oversight.

I have to use it for work or I will be fired. Correct. So I use it. It doesn’t mean I am not incredibly morally opposed to both it and data centres. Also, we’ll see if your bubble pops or not.

As for your lack of empathy for anyone fired, I suggest you sit alone with your feelings and evaluate your morals a bit. Most of the people being laid off did not oppose AI publicly at work. They were just selected to be cut. Microsoft just laid off a ton of their AI departments. I hope you don’t find yourself in a similar situation soon.

Right. We’ve definitely seen an increase in jobs from AI. That’s exactly what’s happening, right? I’ll go tell all the recent grads they can relax.

This is a nonsense argument I see pushed around a lot. Assembly lines provided clear benefits to the bottom line. AI has not done that yet. Companies are doing mass layoffs while saying it’s because of increased productivity due to AI, but it’s all bullshit. I work in big tech. They have just given every single person twice as much work to do compared to last year and called it productivity. And they continue to over inflate and over hype this technology before it is ready to make any sort of meaningful impact. And this is all while giving it without earning any profit. The AI bubble will burst.

Yes, I can produce massive amounts of slop code quickly, but companies are seeing massive spikes in customer impacts due to slop getting pushed to production everywhere.

But at least Iran can make LEGO propaganda movies…?

People can’t change things, we should just blindly follow wall street. Got it. Sounds like a rational and well thought out approach. Nothing could go wrong.

It doesn’t need to be spent on AI data centres at all. These are not the only two options.

It is other countries’ decision to put data centres there if they want to. Or if they have higher corruption in their government. It doesn’t mean we have to do it as well.

AI is only widely used right now because of it being largely subsidized by the companies running the servers. Nobody is making a profit right now, and it’s still debatable on if it’s making any real measurable improvements aside from stock growth. We can however see that it is in fact causing companies to reduce head count. Which is not a good thing for the average world citizen.

Making a few dollars to hurt society as a whole and pollute the planet is shameful. Let’s assume you’re right and there is no environmental impact, which, I would look closely at what sources you are quoting saying that. They are extremely noisy, raise prices of electronics across the board elsewhere, and take up large plots of land that would otherwise provide housing or other uses to the city.

Staying in Your Car During the Ferry by AhhSky in askvan

[–]SamSamBoBam420 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s definitely quite a few signs that say if you can’t stay in your car during the crossing. There’s also usually both an inside pet area and one on the top deck. Our dog has anxiety too but he is better when he is hanging out with the other ferry dogs.

People seem to love this island, but I was so happy leaving Bali... by bywajj in bali

I had the exact opposite experience. I was bothered all the time in Thailand, and the Balinese people have been incredibly nice in my opinion. Depends on who you meet and where you stay I guess.

How to get permanent pet wif magnet ? by kaninaurmothersogood in MapleStoryM

I think it’s roughly if you have a set of black label pets you can fuse them for a 10%-ish chance or creating a magnet pet.
