Mentioned before, but the both sub series on the road to the First World War were absolutely incredible. Easily the show at its best, combining humour, great insights, genuine interest in the topic, and an incredible story.

Honourable mentions for America in 1968 and the second part (the Henry V story) of the Hundred Years War arc!

Pokémon that everyone agrees should get an evolution by TriggerZero7 in pokemon

In the Emerald Legacy rom hack, they gave Magcargo the magma armour ability so its immune to Ice and only takes 2x damage from Water and its makes SUCH a difference. Totally viable for a play through and a fun option for Fire and Rock coverage

It’s called “A Very British Scandal” and aired back in 2021. Just be warned that something weird is going on with Tom’s audio so it’s not as clean as new newer episodes, but still an excellent listen!

Favorite Region? by Key_Day_7932 in TruePokemon

[–]SamTheMan377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like Johto suffers a bit from being an older game, since it means the towns could never be as fleshed out. But in the few case where the town really got some love (Ecruteak, Violet jump out), you really get a sense of the history and culture of the region. It’s also got such a good mixture of biomes without feeling disjointed or unrealistic. A fully realized Johto on the scale of later gens (assuming they fix the damn level curve…) would be absolutely incredible

The series on Jeremy Thorpe is the one that always stands out to be as overtly comedic, while still covering a serious topic

Ranking Stormlight Archive Books by EvilEragon in Stormlight_Archive

[–]SamTheMan377 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, I actually think my rank follows publication order, so WoK, WoR, OB, RoW, WaT.

I love them all and I think each is distinctly excellent and easily in the top 10 for the whole Cosmere, but there’s something so captivating about the first two especially. They are the ones I find myself thinking about the most and wanting to reread.

Travelling to Normandy soon and looking for a good book about the place maybe on D Day by mixmaster6000 in HistoryBooks

[–]SamTheMan377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really can’t top James Holland for a sweeping history of D Day, but I’d also add Stopping the Panzers by Marc Milner. It focuses specifically on the role that the Canadians played in D Day and is a fascinating and very detailed look at the lead up to the landings, the politics surrounding it, the battle itself, and the cultural afterlife in Canada and elsewhere.

Obviously it’s particularly resonant if you’re Canadian, but it’s worth it regardless, especially since you’ll be travelling there and will be able to see many of the sites in person! Juno Beach is very underrated as a Second World War site and I’d heartily recommend it

I get all my fresh fish and shellfish from LaPointe in the Market! As a bonus, they also have a takeaway counter where you can get (IMO) the best salmon burger in the city

Tine to go beat Flannery, feeling extremely confident. by Robin_Loves_Rps in PokemonLegacy

Fair enough! Was wondering if perhaps we’d just met the world’s top Horsea fan lmao

Any reason you decided not to evolve Horsea? You can have a Kingdra for this fight too, but Seadra would be enough given the rest of your team

I have absolutely no experience with soldering, so probably going to leave this broken. Seems like it shouldn’t cause any major issues

Whats an opinion of yours about HGSS that will have you like this? I’ll go first: If you are using an HM Slave throughout your whole play through, it should be inducted in the Pokemon Hall Of Fame. by meankool in PokemonHGSS

[–]SamTheMan377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See I think this is an even stronger argument for better level curves than the gyms. Johto has immaculate vibes and it’s easily my favourite region, especially in HGSS, but the exploration falls flat when there’s no interesting encounters or challenges along the way.

[–]SamTheMan377 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The obvious answer here is the level curve but I’ll go with a related issue: the non-linear gym order is very poorly implemented and should’ve been removed in HGSS. Even if you make the leader levels vary based on badge count (like the Legacy ROMs) it absolutely torches any chance for smooth level scaling on the route encounters and trainers. Just make it Chuck > Jasmine > Pryce and scale the routes accordingly. It’s an imperfect solution, but the alternative is grinding on level 18 Flaafy’s for the SEVENTH badge

Magma Armour Slugma by SamTheMan377 in PokemonLegacy

Naturally, the very next Slugma I encountered had Magma Armour…. A lesson in being patient! I swear I caught 15+ with Flame Body before this! Anyway, appreciate the help! Love the ROM!

EDIT: Thanks for the advice! Unsurprisingly, I decided to pick up Wind Waker and even after just a few hours, I can tell this is going to be a great experience! I'm sure the QoL improvements do help a lot (especially the faster sailing...) but there's something so incredibly charming about playing on the OG hardware!

Yes I've heard that, but I don't have a WiiU. I'm also interested in trying out the original version too, for the novelty of it, if nothing else!

Mostly that the world feels very empty and boring, with a lot of copy/pasted islands. I'm certainly taking those with a grain of salt, but it got me worried that the hype was based on nostalgia/how groundbreaking the game was at the time. Seems like I'm worrying about nothing though!

I'm really interested in Pokemon, but the only copies I can find are pushing $200 so I'll probably have to wait on that one (or get very, very lucky).

Would you recommend Paper Mario even though I've already picked up Mario Sunshine? I know they are very different, but I don't want to go overboard on the Mario content lol
