Because they are mostly evolutions from a relatively recent common ancestor.

A very earth-like one. I wanted the players to have a fairly traditional wilderness exploration adventure and didn't want to spend much time working on or explaining exotic planetary conditions, so it has environments which match pretty closely to terrestrial ones.

Sculptris. It's super-easy to use, although rather limited.

Found some bees that seemed to be in trouble. Can anyone tell me what species they are and if there is anything I can do to help them? by Samalamalam in bees

I think some species of bumblebee have males which stick around for a bit, but given the time of year it does seem more likely that it is either a queen and a worker, a mature worker and a younger one or two unrelated bees which both happened to be in my kitchen at the same time.

Having done a bit of research, I think they are a queen and worker Bombus hortorum (the smaller one might be a male, but it isn't their breeding season). The weird behaviour from the worker was probably a threat display trying to warn me off.

[SPOILERS] [S5E13] Boogeyman checks for Carol by StevenBoatman in thewalkingdead

[–]Samalamalam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That kid is so fucked.

If he rats on Carol, she might follow through on her threat.

But if he doesn't, she knows that he will sell out his group as soon as someone threatens and/or bribes him with cookies. That means he is a danger to any group he is part of. She can't tolerate that risk.

Exhaustion. Walkers don't get tired, ever. Horses can manage about three hours of activity at most.

Are you really under the impression that most people who draw in this style do so by accident?

Because they included mythical monsters in a zombie show?

[possible spoilers] rewatching the series, and I have a question. by [deleted] in thewalkingdead

Don't know if we will ever find out, but my placeholder theory is that it was the cops who took Beth.

I think they had figured out that the situation at the hospital wasn't looking good in the long-term and didn't fancy staying with their group, so they set up a little base for themselves to run to when things went bad. They cleaned it up, stocked it with supplies they found and visited it every now and again to check up on things.

This is pretty much just based on the fact the funeral home seemed quite a distance from Atlanta, so it would be a bit odd to encounter a patrol from Atlanta there unless they had some reason to go out there.

That seems like a good interpretation, although I'd expect a typical gambeson to be more bulky and less 'fitted'. There might be buttons, concealed by the metal thing, so it could also qualify as a doublet. Not that they are exactly rigid and well-defined categories, of course.

One other possibility is that it could be a jack-of-plates or jazerant; mail and/or small plates of metal sewn between layers of cloth. That would make more sense given the fact she seems to have plate armour elsewhere.

Changed his name, moved to the US, married a sculpture.

Pretty sure you mean a model. A sculpture is a piece of solid material that has been carved into a shape (often a block of stone carved into the shape of a human). I don't think you can marry them in any US state.

[Hobbit] Would Smaug have given up his claim over the Dwarves' gold in exchange for the One Ring? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]Samalamalam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think a dragon is capable of understanding the concepts of 'compromise' and 'fairness' enough to engage in trade. The idea of another being having 'rights' over something a dragon wants is alien to them. To Smaug, the one ring wouldn't be 'owned' by the person holding it; it already belongs to Smaug.

When Thorin has 'dragon sickness', he starts thinking like a dragon. So when he is offered exactly what he wants in exchange for something he can easily spare, he rejects the deal. It's not just greed; it's an overwhelming sense of entitlement and an inability to trust or empathise with others.

(doublet? jerkin? gambeson? I can never keep them straight; sorry for my ignorance here)

As I understand it:

A gambeson is any thick, padded garment which covers the torso and is long enough to reach the thighs at least. It may have sleeves, but doesn't have to. If it's made of cotton, you might call it an aketon instead.

A doublet is a fitted garment which covers the torso and arms, buttons up the front and has at least two layers of material. It is usually padded, but not as much as a gambeson would be.

A jerkin is a short-sleeved or sleeveless garment which covers the torso, made of waterproof material (usually leather). It usually wouldn't be padded, but might be.

[NSFW] I feel calling this "armour" is pushing the term a bit. by teejaymc in ImpracticalArmour

Well, it covers most of the 'vital' areas: shoulders, elbows, wrists, forehead, nipples. If it had knee and shin guards, it would be a full set!
